CDC needs to have a come to Jesus with Sarkisian after this season. He can scheme all the plays he wants, but we need a real OC, QB & OL Coach. $$ whip the best guys available. He could of done much better than Milwee and Flood has yet to put a real run game together since he's been here.

I don’t really see any big conclusions from this, other than the fact Vanderbilt is a highly experienced team.

Personally think sark would be great with a play caller where he just has to game plan and help with script. Sark is pretty fucking dog shit once his script doesn’t work as a playcaller.

That’s not in order of experience either it’s in alpha order.

A good OC “adjusts” as the game progresses. What a novel concept.

Monday: Bobby

A preview:

"What needs to be done?

Some possible answers include a change at quarterback and/or a change of the play caller.

Most likely, neither of those are going to happen."

Spoiler

Monday

By Bobby Burton

A week ago, I was genuinely surprised by the Longhorns’ offensive performance against Oklahoma, as were many of you probably.

I thought Texas would win that game, but I didn’t foresee such an encouraging outing from the offense.

Fast forward one week, and I didn’t see this unbelievably poor performance coming. Chances are, many of you didn’t either.

The only thing the offense did right on Saturday night was not turn the ball over.

Other than that, they were downright horrible.

They couldn’t run, they couldn’t block, they couldn’t hit wide open receivers, they couldn’t even stay in bounds when they needed to. Hell, in overtime, with the game on the line, they netted negative two yards.

You name it, they couldn’t do it. They were, in a word, abysmal. It took a team effort to be that abysmal.

So that naturally leads us all to this question:

What needs to be done?

Some possible answers include a change at quarterback and/or a change of the play caller.

Most likely, neither of those are going to happen.

So how about we take a third option, one I thought we were beginning to execute against the Sooners.

How about we play to our strengths?

Let’s get back to taking what the defense gives us. To stringing plays together to wear down an opposing defense while keeping our own defense fresh.

That seems like a good plan to me, one I thought the coaching staff had learned the previous week.

After all, Texas is really good on defense. They are playoff worthy. They are becoming great on special teams. Again, they are playoff worthy.

So the answer here is simple:

Lean into the defense and special teams instead of over-extending the offense. Devise a game plan with that in mind.

Play for the next first down instead of going for the jugular with a trick play on third-and-two with the score tied at 0-0.

Force the run game. Force the short, quick passing game.

Play to the strengths of your team.

Because if you try to be something else, and it will possibly cost Texas a game they shouldn’t lose.

Nobody on offense plays with any force or “want to”. There is not a single offensive player that is dominating there match up on a game to game basis despite likely being more athletic and a better player than the opponent. Miami lost the other night but they had a kid that should still be in high school playing with more aggression than anything I’ve seen from any player on our offense. Not sure what the deal is there, but the entire offense plays with no confidence.

Nick Townsend gets after it.

I think we will beat both Arkansas and Vanderbilt.  Georgia is a loss.  MSU and A&M are toss ups.  So 7-5 or 8-4.

I'm no where near as confident as you regarding Vanderbilt. It's probably more likely Texas goes 1-4 over the remainder of the regular season than it is 3-2.

If you could be guaranteed an 8-4 finish to the regular season, yet you do not get to pick the wins and losses, would you take that record, right now?

I would take 8-4 if I could, without hesitation. 2 of the last 3 games involved one of the worst Texas offenses I have ever seen and one of those games also included a lackluster defense. I feel like the chances of seeing more abysmally shitty offensive performances over the next 5 games are really high and there's a solid chance that the defense plays like asshole again as well.

A blowout loss to Georgia feels inevitable and an embarrassment in Starkville feels very plausible. 5-7 is more likely than 10-2. Hell, 9-3 would fucking stun me.

My biggest problem with all of this is that there is no excuse for it. This is year 5 and Sarkisian has been given every resource. This is his doing and the offense is his bailiwick, yet the offense looks like an FCS unit.

Also, name a QB that has been on a Texas roster and actually gotten better during their time on campus while Sarkisian and Milwee have been running that room. Like, name a single one.

Without hesitation, I'd take 8-4. A 3-2 finish over our next five would be downright great when I think about this as an expected value calculation. There's a material chance 1-4 or 2-3 occurs. 5-0 isn't happening, 4-1 is highly unlikely, and 3-2 seems no more likely than 2-3. 3-2 is the best outcome of the likely outcomes.

I would say Quinn got significantly better from 22 to 23, but the regression in 24 is telling.

Vanderbilt might be the best team left on our schedule and will definitely score points on us. That’s the least likely win left on our schedule IMO.

8-4 with wins against OU, Arkansas, and A&M would ease the sting a bit, but like you said its a massive failure to not even sniff the playoff with the resources behind this program. Im pretty concerned with this MSU game. Feels like we are asking too much out of the defense right now.

Sark can’t do shit with a job unless it’s one that he took after Lane Kiffin vacated the position. Just go back and look at Sark’s history.

I mean this is it. This is exactly how I feel with the exception of past performance = future results.

I think this team has a nearly unmatchable ceiling and the floor is where we pretty much are. If it gets any worse you and I both know conversations will be being had on what is and isn't and acceptable product for the business of Texas Football.

Kentucky was an unacceptable performance from top to bottom front to back and side to side on the offensive side of the ball. Starting with the coaches. It was an embarassment and an abomination.

I don't give a fuck about practice if the philosophy isn't going to change. The current course isn't one they can keep and Sark has to fucking know that.

The issue is that I don’t think Sark knows that he needs to make changes. His comments of delusion seem to indicate that he’s just happy to win, removing any context regarding how shitty the team played and how poor the opponent is.

imma, you truly think there's an unmatchable ceiling to this team?  We couldnt run the ball against Kentucky... the OL after seasoning for years is asswater and this RB room has so many fucking questions given the injury history.

Yes, I do think that when this team plays to its capability there isn't another team that can beat them this year.

This isn't the past, there is a lot more parity out there than you either want to admit or just aren't seeing and there's not really a truly dominant team out there except one Texas already played and didn't look outclassed.

We’re 79th nationally in total offense. If I counted right, 9th in the state of Texas. 70 spots behind Texas State and also behind UTSA and North Texas.

I think he knows exactly what needs to happen, but I fear his past is weighing heavily on his ability to make tough decisions.

If there was a  ranking for Coach speak, Sark is easily in the top 3. I’ve stopped taking any stock into his press conferences. It is rare for him to acknowledge the negative in ways that Sabin or others bluntly do. If he does, it’s usually a quick hitter with hardly any explanation.

Pressers are not for serious discussion about the state of the program. They’re a bone thrown to legacy media guys for tiny little cute quotes for their stories. Nothing good would come from Sark publicly ripping into Flood and Milwee in October. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems pretty clear to me that he understands a lot of the problems were caused in the offseason and can’t be fixed until next offseason. It just is what it is at this point.

I will be stunned if we claw our way to 8-4. Beating any of Georgia, Vandy or A&M would be shocking at this point, and Miss St. is going to be a dog fight.

I watched all of the LSU game and most of the Alabama one.  They look very similar to last year.  They have upgraded somewhat on defense and have another good TE, but the main difference is they are playing with confidence.  We tend to play better at home and our defense can take away their confidence.  This game is way more winnable than Georgia.  But of course we could lose any game because our offense is shit.  The beta is literally 5 games either way.

Why would you take 8-4 though?  I'm not saying that we won't finish worse- but that's a fail for the season the same as 7-5 or 6-6 or 5-7.  Point being, there's nothing good that comes from 8-4, and it's possible that 8-4 might lead to less soul search than some lesser record.

No QB has gotten better. Arch seems to be much worse.  It's bizarre. He's been good at the whole offense thing in the past.

How was Washington's offense with Sark as HC/OC?  It's easy to just do OC duties only vs both.

Per Google AI:

Washington Huskies offensive statistics under Steve Sarkisian

Offensive ratings and rankings fluctuate, but here is a summary of how the offense performed and developed during his tenure:

2009 (5-7): After the Huskies' 0-12 season in 2008, Sarkisian's offense was immediately an improvement. One source called the overall offensive grade for the season a "B," noting it was good enough to keep the team in most games.

2010 (7-6): The offense took another step forward. In the early part of the season, the offense was ranked 36th nationally in total offense, averaging 436 yards per game. It was also ranked 20th in the nation in passing offense (287 yards per game), a significant jump from the previous season.

2011 (7-6): Sarkisian's system continued to build on the foundation he established, which featured a pro-style offense that balanced the run and a short-pass, play-action game.

2012 (7-6): The offense showed consistency and stability, demonstrating that it could remain effective even after the departure of first-round NFL quarterback Jake Locker. It continued to develop under quarterback Keith Price.

2013 (8-4): In his final season, the offense's passing game was ranked 39th nationally in passing yards per game (270.0) and 31st in pass efficiency (148.23). The yardage per passing attempt was 7.9, which ranked 41st.

They went from winless to 8-4 or 9-3 or something like that and his shitty QB (Jake Locker I think) got taken in the top 10 in the draft, so, just fine? All the 1000 yard runners. I wasn't paying any attention to them at that time so know nothing beyond boxscore.
