So I understand the frustration of just saying to shut down the government, but if the Dems don’t do it in the context of winning the propaganda war they will not do well in the mid terms. And that is the real goal. Once again, the Democrats can’t get out of the way of their own bad/no strategies.

It will be 2026, nobody in this country has the attention span to watch a 2hr movie, so they aren't going to be thinking about a shutdown a year ago when they're at the ballot box.

They're going to be thinking about whatever FoxNews or the, new and improved, right-wing TikTok told them earlier that morning as they talked to that nice young soldier who is at the polling place to protect them from any rabid trans person trying to use the bathroom.

On my way to dinner last night, I heard someone on NPR report that one of the reasons the last shutdown ended was due to actions like these by TSA agents. I'd forgotten all about that.

Great that I fly to Guadalajara from dfw in about 4 hours…

By "sells" do you mean sell out?

There’s a couple of things at play: 10 democrats need to vote with Republicans to pass the continuing resolution. Fetterman is probably a yes, so the number is 9.  If Schumer asks for 8 plus himself, he’ll get it.

And any of them that do should be primaried out of their spot.

The classic performative bit from democrats is so played out especially since they’re giant pussies and always cave.

The always cave part is the bad part.

Their performative shit is just as bad. How about instead of setting up this photo op you get in front of every camera, every short form video like TikTok, reels, etc, and push the narratives you want pushed.

Because they dont know how to do that.

My son is caught up in it. He's a lawyer at EPA, furloughed during his approved parental leave. Now it's no longer paid leave. Pretty tough on a young family living in  Capitol Hill.

Our nation is in sad shape. A really dangerous place.

This is the type of short-term thinking that has doomed the Democratic Party for a long time. Meanwhile, starting with Rush Limbaugh over thirty years ago, then Fox News, and now Project 2025, the Republicans have had a detailed multi-decade plan they’ve been implementing that crosses the judicial branch, executive branch, local and state politics, and communications programs with a consistent set of messages and strategies.

But sure, just go ahead and assume the Democrats can do well in 13 months by throwing some shit together in July next year to try to win.  I’m sure it will work great

.

I dont believe in a "oh no they'll give the right-wing media a talking point" problem, because no matter what happens there will be a right-wing media talking point that sticks. That's partially due to the long term planning you mentioned and also quite a bit of luck that right-wingers happened to be strong in non-traditional media places when that scene blew up over the last 20 years.

Yes, you need a plan and yes, Dems are really bad at having a coherent, long-term plan but this particular moment is small potatoes on next November.

Dems should shut this shit down and not give in. No one gives a fucka about ICE kidnapping citizens , about Epstein, and the war crimes. Doesn’t matter happens Dems will be blames because big cities have crime and are dangerous. Fuck it let it rip and shut it down. Don’t give in

The problem is that a lot of people who rely on government checks may stop getting them.  Government workers may be furloughed or laid off.  Etc.

I understand that a lot of us are in FAFO mode when it comes to MAGA getting consequences (including me), but many of the people who could suffer now are single moms, senior citizens, etc, who didn't do anything wrong.

They are deliberately incompetent, that's kind of the entire point.

They aren't. They are just incompetent. There's nothing deliberate about it.

You realize that both can be true, right? They are nakedly acting as a controlled opposition party, and also are personally incompetent.

I'm not disagreeing with you, is what I'm saying. You're just not seeing the whole picture.

I am seeing the whole picture. Not everything is a fucking conspiracy.

These are people who were elected by their constituents and have no idea how to do their fucking jobs. That's it. They are trying desperately to do their job, but they don't know how to do it. That's incompetence.

FWIW, Social Security checks will continue during the shutdown, but point taken on government workers, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck.

Cracking Up Lol GIF by STRAPPED!

Name one thing, ANYTHING, that backs up this statement. Show me what Hakeem Jefferies or Chuck Schumer are doing that indicates they are "desperately trying to do their job.

Ezra Klein was on with Tim Miller at The Bulwark and they talked about this-two 2018 shut downs didn’t hurt the GOP electoral prospects in 2020 (they picked up seats) or in 2014 following the 2013 shut-down (again, picked up seats).  It’s just not something voters appear to place a big priority on.

Also, you’re giving the GOP way too much credit for strategic maneuvering over a long period of time.  They basically got lucky that they found a master communicator who can speak stupid to a cohort of voters emboldened by social media algorithms that every one of their infantile thoughts is precious and equally valid as those from the better educated, and should be spread publicly on Facebook and Twitter.

About a 50/50 chance they voted for this by voting for Trump so don't know if you can really say they did nothing wrong...
