Imagine watching all of this the last nine months and still being in the republicans' corner.

You'd have to be bona fide stupid or bona fide racist.  Or maybe all you care about is guns being legal and/or abortion being illegal, or your tax cut, so you're willing to overlook the rest of the trainwreck because you got what you wanted.

You're definitely fucked up in one way or another if you're still MAGA after all of this.

Kinda funny watching the arch of these government shutdown threads over the years. Thanks for the laugh @Bozo_Casanova

I’m against shutdowns 100% of the time. This is no exception. That said,  I didn’t stop understanding strategy because of my preferences. The Republicans have given the Democrats no reason to do anything other than this. So here we are.

And also, they can do whatever they want without Democrats. That's how majorities work.

Fascinating that didn’t happen between in 21 and 22…so very “weird” as you say

Yes. Because they didn’t blow up the filibuster. And they negotiated with the Republican leadership before and during the shutdown. They also didn’t engage in relentless insults, violate the Hatch act, or post weird, racist AI videos from the white house account moments after meetings with the minority leadership.

Nothing fascinating about it. Leadership couldn't whip the votes.

Are you saying Senate Republicans aren't unified?

There's nothing rhetorical about it. I know how the Senate works. I'm wondering if you do. The majority can pass whatever they want whenever they want.

Unless, of course, they don't have the votes.

Democrats couldn't blow up the filibuster.

I really hope the Republicans can.

The conversation is always so much more fulfilling when the “adults” show up. Makes me feel so great about the direction of our country.

Spent the last hour on the phone with my oldest as she has come to the realization over the last year that her lifelong plans around becoming a lawyer and working on the legislative side of our government probably isn’t for her after all. Listening to her and her friends and their perspective is really a kick in the nuts. I’ll be fine either way, I can pack my shit, write a check, and move to wherever will take me whenever I get tired of everything. Her generation isn’t so lucky.

“Adult” like repeatedly asking the same question, which you already know the answer for?  In some utterly transparent attempt to gain consensus on eliminating the filibuster.

They managed to get *checks notes* Joe Biden elected president.

That's how genius Republicans are.

And it went so well the country chose Trump 2.0.

Not sure what kind of point you were hunting there.

Funny story, both my kids are doing great in undergrad, and have been encouraged by advisors and faculty to apply for PhD programs overseas.  Is this the direction everything is headed?  Where faculty are recruiting our kids to go to Italy or Germany for graduate studies?  Fucking hell.  I remember the days everyone was trying to come here for the opportunities.  What the fucking fuck.

A big fuck you for using stupid fucking AI.  You're a moron if you need AI to explain shit to you.  Get the fuck out and go back to your AOL.

I have this discussion with my staff all the time… this is such backward thinking. ChatGPT is a tool no different than a basic calculator. It’s odd gatekeeping.

It is a rhetorical question, but I don’t read it in the same context you do. The filibuster is always a threat, yet somehow the votes/negotiations usually work themselves out. Seems odd this time around that isn’t happening nor is there even much movement towards it happening. Why oh why could that be?

Mainly that the whims of the electorate really don't have much to do with the "genius politics" of either party.

What's more important? Archaic Senate rules or passing this budget?

They don’t even have to eliminate the filibuster.  They can make any exception they want at any time for any reason with their majority, which they have done repeatedly in the past.  They could literally make a rule tomorrow that says the filibuster is intact except for this particular budget bill  passed on 10/2/2025. Anything they want to pass  is a simple 51 votes away.  Its not the dems, or the trans, or the “illegals” preventing this from happening.  It is the pubs in 100% control.    No amount of lying makes that not the case.

This messaging from the Rs will hopefully help some voters figure out who to blame. Trump determines what’s essential and Trump decided to close down National Parks, fire the VA workers, stop payments to school districts to fund education programs, etc.

Well but DJT is leaving the parks open. They’ll illegally spend funds if it means making this unnoticable to their voters and they’ll kill essential services to hurt Dems.

I think the argument over health subsidies is weedy and less important long term than the pocket recission shit. “The Constitution gives us the power of the purse. It’s closed until the Admin understands that” is clear and understandable.

There is no point appropriating funds as long as Russ Vought has a veto over where they are spent.

Was recently in Spain and did a tapas tour.  One of the people on the tour is a cancer researcher in the US.  He said the stories of the brain drain are 100% real.  Nobody can get grants for research and foreign countries are doing their best to steal our best and brightest. Did not give me a warm fuzzy for the future. We are collectively becoming dumber at an alarming rate.
