If I recall, not only was the buyout obscene, there was no offset, right?

100% guaranteed and no offset clause. Also $0 buyout if he ever wanted to leave town.

I bet Louisiana leads every state in per capita great players. Maybe by a lot. And LSU has a stranglehold on most of it. Certainly under threat in the NIL world though

I actually looked this up, and weirdly (to me, at least) it's Mississippi, then Louisiana, and GA/TEX/FL

LSU is a special case because there's only ever been one major football program in the State and most of the kids grow up wanting to play there along with everyone in the State rooting for them.  In the world before NIL, that was a huge advantage.

I remember them losing their shit when Landon Collins announced on ESPN and his mom was in abject horror and disappointment. And then before Collins, Joe McKnight going to USC instead of LSU people in that stare went apocalyptic.  Landon Collins will forever be my favorite commitment video of all-time.

Just chef's kiss

And I couldn't help but notice that Jeff Traylor only shows up on the list for the OSU job. Lulz at an SEC school hiring a 4-4 coach from an AAC school that is regressing every year.

I will add to the Elko contract that only 75% is of the contract is guaranteed. Penn State could/should put pressure on them with that lopsided deal favoring the school.

It would be the most aggie thing ever for them lock Elko into a Jimbo-type deal after beating up on the weakest SEC schedule possible right before Thanksgiving, only to have the Horns completely shit on them before the ink is dry.

Dillingham was on staff at Auburn for 1 year, OC in 2019, got as high as #7 with Bo Nix.  After Dillingham left, Gus Malzahan Offenses struggled and he was gone 2 years later depsite having Bo Nix.  if he went to Auburn, the QB likely follows and they are instantly a contender with their WR corp

Auburn should totally hire Urban Meyer. Perfect fit. What could go wrong?

They would shoot their university president in the head if that would guarantee Meyer would coach there. he would win, so it doesn't really matter what would go wrong. they'll worry about that shit later.

I’m not saying ole miss and auburn are top 5 jobs but why can’t they keep/get a good coach? Don’t they have the resources? I just remember both schools, when they were able to cheat, make it hard for us to get the same recruits.

Is it because they can’t cheat anymore and it’s NIL?

Didn’t kiffin have the number 1 class last year from the portal? I guess I’m not understanding why kiffin would go to LSU or florida if he had the resources for the portal last year. I mean, i get it those schools are bigger and better but when ole miss/auburn use to cheat they could get anyone.

Auburn may be a cesspool but LSU doesn’t sound any better right now with the governor involved.

Are you asking why Ole Miss can't keep a good coach when they currently have a long-tenured good coach?

If he does leave, he was there for a long time and is leaving an upper-middleweight for one of the elite programs of the sport. Hardly a bad look for OM.

I overlooked the online sportsbook reference; my mistake. I can't believe anyone would bet on AU's (or any other) next coach. You'd have to be a degenerate gambler.

Patterson was mentioned on Full Ride today by Neuheisel. Anyway, there are a lot of spots that will open up when coaches get poached.

Exactly.  Auburn is a great place to stop on your way to buy that bass boat you always wanted but never had time for.   Terrible move for anyone who cares about their next job.

They can't all be winners. So many programs who think they should be in the CFP every year: Bama, UGA, Texas, OU, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, and these days Ole Miss.  Even with 4-5 spots, they can't all make it. Is this cycle going crazy because traditional underdogs like aggy, Vandy, and Mizzou are in the mix this year?

Posted

Jon Gruden is an average coach at best, and he won a SB with Tony Dungy's roster, then he managed to completely dismantle it and they finally fired him. He's just Jeff Fisher with a weird erection for talking schemes. His regular season record is 117-112, and adding the postseason it goes to 122-117. He's mediocre, and I'm being kind. Just because someone eats, sleeps, drinks, urinates, shits, dreams of football 24/7 doesn't make them a good coach. Gruden fucking sucks lol. I'm not even thankful for the SB win we got in his first year. Dungy should get an honorary ring for putting that roster together for him.

I think he just needed people to forget about the email stuff and plaster himself all over social media. I think everyone kind of gets a kick out of Gruden. I wouldn't expect him to crush it being a college head coach right now, regardless.

I could give a shit what college coaches do in the pros. Its a different skillset, and even Saban had a losing record. Meyer coached at 4 different schools and had them all winning bigly fast:

  • Bowling Green: 2-9 the year before to 8-3 and then 9-3
  • Utah: 5-6 the year before to 10-2 and then 12-0
  • Florida: 7-5 the year before to 9-3 and then 13-1 (champs)
  • Ohio State: 6-7 the year before to 12-0, then 12-2, then 14-1 (champs)

He's a morally bankrupt asshole, but he knows how to put together a squad that can win cfb games.

I give a shit when it's such a trainwreck that they get fired during their first season. Saban was 15-17 in Miami.

And I'm aware of his college track record but that was all years ago.

Cheating was a lot cheaper than NIL, it only cost a few hundred thousand and your integrity to get someone that now cost millions.

A few cars here and a starter home for mom there, a church for dad and you’ve got a championship level team for under a mil that one or a few boosters can scrape together from their car lots and a few construction sites.

It must be dawning on some of these schools that they are likely to pay more for a guy who is not appreciably better than who they fired. It’s all a little bit crazy.

this will sound crazy but hear me out

what about a guy with "NFL bonafides" to come in and be a GM type, but also to put the systems in place and then get the coordinators in there that can do the real coaching

he would also work the NIL deals and show off his ability to prep players for the NFL

if a school would be innovative enough to go in that direction I think that really makes their search easy and down to one guy

Gee, this sounds familiar.  Let's take a look at what one Big 12 university decided to do:

"The department's New Leadership Model will be similar to an NFL approach using a general manager structure. It's a collaborative approach to managing the ASU football program that includes sport and administrative divisions, which will operate as distinct, but collective units focused on elevating all aspects of Sun Devil Football. This structure will allow the department to form a multi-layered method to the talent evaluation and recruiting processes, increase its emphasis on both student-athlete and coach development and retention, and provide a boost in resource allocation and generation."

"Our goal for this football program is to reach unprecedented heights, and therefore we need to find a way to operate more innovatively and efficiently than we have in the past," Anderson said. "In the spirit of innovation, our vision for this program is to have a head coach who serves as a CEO and is the central leader with a collaborative staff around him that will elevate the performance of players and coaches on the field, in the classroom and in our community. Equally important, the head coach will be a dynamic and tireless recruiter."

The New Leadership Model will allow for resource sharing and strategic planning between the football staff and administrators who are directly involved with the program. The administrative division will be primarily composed of Anderson, Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director Jean Boyd and Senior Associate Athletics Director Scottie Graham. The sport division will operate with an experienced and senior football administrator, Senior Associate Athletic Director Tim Cassidy, helping to manage day-to-day operations, along with a variety of staffers responsible for player development, player personnel, and recruiting, among other areas.

Sun Devil Football's existing recruiting infrastructure will be upgraded through additional staff support and evaluation resources, by instilling a culture of accountability at all levels, and building long-term relationships in communities across the country to help ensure recruiting quality and consistency. Both the sport and administrative divisions will play key roles in student-athlete development.

The New Leadership Model affords coordinators and assistant coaches more flexibility in how they develop student-athletes on the field, and enables Sun Devil Football to build on the 'Championship Life' program already in place through the Office of Student-Athlete Development to better equip student-athletes with the tools and skills necessary to succeed in their respective future endeavors.

And the beneficiary of such a radical reformation of the football program?

Remind me, did Saban go 21-22 in his last 4 seasons at Bama overall, go 13-19 in conference play, and have his team quit in him during his last two games coaching?

I know someone who did and tell me the last time Neuheisel actually hired a coach or made a decision that mattered.
