This will be tough, as will every game left on the schedule. We lack the firepower to hurt people. If the defense travels, we win the rest. Banks’ unit probably fucks us at least once more.

It won’t be

Just as the offensive line seemed to gel against Oklahoma, starting center Cole Hutson has now been labeled as “out” for the Kentucky game by Coach Steve Sarkisian.

The exact injury has not been revealed but Hutson sustained it during Tuesday’s practice. It is not expected to be season-ending, but he “will miss some time”.

**

Back-up Connor Robertson is expected to take over for Hutson at center with Nick Brooks remaining at left guard.

One of the key aspects of Brooks’ relative success on Saturday was his reliance on both Hutson and Trevor Goosby and their combined experience helping Brooks with his assignments pre-snap.

While Robertson has spent just as much time in the program as Hutson (and all of it at center), Robertson does not have the same game experience.

We’ll see how the loss of Hutson affects the interior of the offensive line from a communication standpoint.

Every injury is unfortunate. But this one to Huston is particularly ill-timed.

**

CJ Baxter remains listed as doubtful. He practiced some on Tuesday and a little more on Wednesday.

But, I will say this yet again, Sark has been very forthcoming IMO in his injury reports.

If you’re labeled as “doubtful” on Wednesday, it’s very unlikely you play on Saturday.

**

Defensive tackle Maraad Watson is listed one-rung up as “questionable”.

Watson sustained an injury during the OU game that he is still nursing. It’s important to note that he left the OU game at one point but then later returned.

**

One recruiting note:

Linebacker Braylon Hodge from Cherry Creek HS in Colorado (same HS as Gunnar Helm) officially decommitted from Michigan State last week.

He then took an official visit to Oregon this past weekend.

He is slated to also see Michigan and Texas. The Texas visit is currently set for Nov. 22 for the Arkansas game.

While it would be natural to expect Hodge to make a decision after he takes all of his visits, he actually has already seen Texas once this semester.

So don’t be surprised if he makes a decision in the next couple of weeks.

Cherry Creek won the 5A state title last year and they’re undefeated again this season. Hodge has 90 tackles on the season and recorded a career-high 21 tackles in a single game against Pine Creek.

Holy shit, me might actually see Daniel Cruz.

I would really love this to be a 17-3 type game at halftime, so the staff can work in someone like Cruz and give Simon/Clark an audition in the 2nd half.

Off to Lexington | What Must Travel (Thursday AM)

It goes without saying, but the trip to Dallas was big.

Texas continues to dominate its biggest rival on the field with its third win in four seasons – all of which preventing Oklahoma from reaching the end zone. But larger than that, the Longhorns keep their season alive with the victory in Dallas.

To quote The Script, the Longhorns' hopes of hearing their name called for the College Football Playoff are Still Alive, but Barely Breathing. And that is how they will remain for the duration of the regular season.

Heading to Lexington, Kentucky this weekend, the Longhorns will need to carry on that same do-or-die mentality. While Texas has more talent than Kentucky, there is always a cautious approach to road night games in the SEC.

***

Stay Up and Involved

This was evident for those in attendance at the Cotton Bowl, and a night and day difference from The Swamp – but the sidelines were incredible last Saturday. The offense supported the defense, and the defense supported the offense and everyone went nuts when Ryan Niblett scampered 75 yards for the game-sealing touchdown. That has to continue. Texas cannot afford to fall back into lackadaisical enthusiasm habits.

Win the Trenches

For two straight years I sat in the post-game press conference and heard Brent Venables say the Texas Longhorns whooped Oklahoma up front on both sides of the line of scrimmage. That is great. But that can't be the case against just your biggest rival and not carry over to the remaining games on the schedule. Kentucky will test your ability to stop the run and both of their running backs prove to be a handful when it comes to bringing down to the ground. If Texas can force the hand of the Wildcats early on and get them in predictable passing game situations, this one won't be close.

Limit Explosives

On a given weekend, this is a big key for the game. Funny enough, Texas actually lost the explosive battle against Oklahoma in both the run and the pass, yet we saw what happened when Oklahoma was forced to drive the length of the field. The defense stiffened in the red area, and sure enough, the extra snaps forced turnovers or drive stalling plays.

Kentucky is the least explosive offense in the SEC. They are dead last in plays of 10+ yards and 20+ yards gained. Force Cutter Boley to take more and more snaps, he will turn the football over.

On the Run Game

To be honest, I don't expect much drop off on the offensive line this weekend. Texas will be without Cole Hutson at center, but will replace him with four-year contributor Connor Robertson. As long as the guard game is remedied, or at least looking like it will continue taking steps in the right direction, the running game should have success. It does not need to be dominant, but it needs to be respectable. I mentioned it after Florida, but will say it again, the worst of Nick Brooks is in the past. Texas will continue to move in the right direction with this unit and Kentucky will be an opportunity to grow some confidence.

***

All in all it is this.

A win and you keep your hopes alive.

I do think Texas is talented enough to win out. We all believed that at the beginning of the season, right?

Arch Manning is growing right before our eyes each week. Which, for the outside world, should be scary. Manning remains the conductor for the locomotive that is the Texas offense, he will dictate how fast or far the train will go. Right now, I sit with confidence levels in No. 16 at its highest point of the season.

This road test in Lexington will need to be his first road victory for the hopes of this season, and fortunately, I believe it will be.

So it looks like we only have 3 potential losses left on the schedule: Vandy, Georgia, A&M. Vandy is overrated, Georgia is the worst theybe ever been under Smart, and A&M will still be A&M in a big game. Winning out and making the playoffs is still pretty realistic for us.

The Hutson news is disappointing. I don’t give a shit about PFF grades, especially PFF OL grades. That was the best the OL has looked against a good defense since 2023. I was hoping that unit was coming together.

Gerry doesn’t think we’ll cover, and I’m there too with Baxter and Hutson out.

I know there is a reason Hutson is starting over Robertson, but I didn't really see an appreciable difference when he had to come in earlier in the season. Baxter... holy shit man. Heal!

He didn’t. OTF said it was during practice. Doesn’t sound like he’ll be back quickly.

“Texas will be without starting center Cole Hutson when on the road this weekend in Lexington. Hutson sustained an injury in practice and very quickly was given the inactive designation.

The expectation is Connor Robertson will start at center for the Horns this weekend.

Connor Stroh also appears on the injury report on the offensive line. As does Xavier Filsaime in the back end of the defense.”

I am vexed at the Filasame injury. Regarding Hutson, Robertson should be an upgrade because whatever Flood puts out there in the beginning, the second option is always better. The only thing Stroh hurt is the bed he lies on. It's also the only time he's ever done anything laterally at his time in Austin.
