Maryland board also recommended retaining trainers who failed to treat Jordan McNair

The University System of Maryland Board of Regents recommended this week that the College Park campus retain the athletic trainers who have drawn the bulk of the blame for failing to properly treat Jordan McNair during a May workout, according to two people familiar with the situation.

McNair suffered from exertional heatstroke during team sprints and died 15 days later. An independent report into the circumstances surrounding his death outlined numerous missteps that were made by the school’s athletic trainers along the way, and the university has accepted responsibility for mistakes made by the school employees.

Despite this, the regents encouraged the school to reinstate Steve Nordwall, assistant athletic director of athletic training, and Wes Robinson, the head trainer for the football program. Nordwall and Robinson have been on paid administrative leave since Aug. 10.

Can one of the lawyer-types here explain this to me: Why was Maryland wanting to retain the head coach and assistant trainers?

To head off lawsuits that could be caused by implicating themselves by firing these people? Hasn't the school already accepted responsibility in a statement and settled with the McNair family out of court?

To block Durkin and the trainers from suing the hell out of the school, like Briles allegedly threatened Baylor?

Because they are incredibly insensitive, tone-death and stupid?

Also, since the AD has stated that he was "surprised" that Durkin was fired, was that just a CYA statement?  A separate question is how does he still have a job?

What a complete dumpster fire.

Fight breaks out among Maryland football players at practice in wake of Durkin drama

Matthew Barber, a 21-year-old back-up punter, who has spoken out against the culture of the program, says he was assaulted at the end of practice Tuesday by a fellow player who supported coach DJ Durkin.

Barber, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., said word had gotten around on the team that he is a “whistle-blower” who talked to investigators about problems on the team. When Durkin returned to practice Tuesday to watch the team practice, his supporters on the team felt emboldened and began taunting Barber, he said. Some mocked and insulted him, while others threw footballs at him, Barber said.

Toward the end of the practice, another player attacked Barber, attempting to punch him in the face, Barber said. While the two teammates were fighting, others tried to intervene and grabbed Barber’s arms behind his back, he said. That allowed the other player to punch Barber repeatedly in the face, leaving him with a black eye, needing multiple stitches on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder, Barber said.

The important question is was everyone involved properly hydrated?

So the rebuttal to someone speaking to investigators looking into the supposedly toxic culture in the football program...is mob violence?

Yeah, that'll show 'em that the program's culture is on the up and up!

Even better, this happened during the one day Durkin was back on the job.  I'm sure he showed his usual responsible stewardship and made sure the situation didn't get out of hand.

I thought that this happened the day Durkin was fired (Wednesday), not the day he was reinstated (Tuesday).

Holy Crap that place is fucked up!

It appears to have been Punter-on-Punter violence, but the aggressor was a 30 year-old former Aussie Rules Football Player!!

The independent investigations uncovered abuse and bullying in the football program in which players feared retaliation if they spoke up.

The Sun said the other player involved in the altercation had not returned messages seeking comment, and the newspaper did not identify him.

The McNair family attorney, Billy Murphy, identified the player in an interview with WUSA 9 on Wednesday night as a punter Durkin had recruited from Australia while coaching "at his last stop," which was Michigan. The only Australian punter on the Terrapins' roster is Wade Lees, a former Australian rules football player who entered the season as the oldest player in the Big Ten at age 30.

Lees, a junior, is Maryland's starting punter. He did not respond to a request for comment from The Diamondback, the University of Maryland's independent student newspaper.

Barber said the athletic trainers treated his injuries and he spoke with campus police.

His attorney, Malcolm P. Ruff, said Barber was attacked for cooperating in the Durkin investigation.

"This young man had the courage to stand up," Ruff said. "He became a target."

More on Wade Lees from December of 2015...

Maryland's 27-year-old punter got banned from Australian football for PEDs

GettyImages-122202237.0.jpg

In 2012, Wade Lees was a promising young Aussie Rules football prospect who had just declared for the AFL Draft. Then he was hit with an 18-month ban two years after ordering a product with a banned steroid online from the US. Now, at 27, he's the next punter at Maryland...

LOL, now the BoR Chair is resigning:

Quote
"In recent days, I have become the public face of both the board and its decisions related to these matters. In my estimation, my continued presence on the board will inhibit its ability to move Maryland’s higher education agenda forward. And I have no interest in serving as a distraction from that important work.
Accordingly, I will step down from the Board of Regents immediately."

1) Don't give a shit. Just beat Michigan State Saturday

I don't think all this shit is due to corruption per se; it's more incompetence,

Maryland athletics =a Little Rascals episode where they get to run a University.  Hand;drawn fliers with "Game Today" and maybe a backwards "y".  It's really comical. Always has been.  Although fans really only care about basketball.  My 5 co-alumni who live up there are all, "oh, something happened with the football team?  Ok, well dinner's on, ,thanks anyway.  First basketball game coming up!"

The backup punter was picking on younger players?

Am I reading that right?  The backup punter?  Backup punter was being a bully?

That's the story they're going with?

Call me crazy but I just don't think a 30 year old to be playing college football.

I'm still shocked that this assclown of an AD they hired after getting fired for his DWI/redpantiesinlap/notmywife incident is still employed.

I don't know the actual chain of command of the first sham investigation that Maryland ran, but doesn't the AD have to have most of responsibility for the organization of that?  And he came up with this:

Quote

The two current players who spoke with ESPN and other sources close to the program said they are concerned about how Walters' investigation is being managed.

Players had to return early from their time off to meet with investigators on Aug. 1, two days before the first preseason workout. A sign-up sheet was posted on the office door of Jason Baisden, the team's assistant athletic director for football operations and equipment. Meetings took place in the offensive staff's meeting room in the Gossett Football Team House.

"They tried to interview players at the most inconvenient time, in Gossett, basically right in front of Durkin's office," one of the current players said.

"Basically anybody can walk by, any coach or whoever really wants to can walk by and see who signed up and see who's talking to the investigation," the other current player said. "They're singling us out even more when it's supposed to be an anonymous investigation."

This is completely expected, yet completely pointless.

Literally all of these accrediting agencies are revenue-maximizing agencies (think S&P and Moody's in the 2008 meltdown) who want to accredit everyone remotely capable while making just enough noise to look like they're doing something.

They'll place Maryland on probation, which will force Maryland to hire all sorts of new administrators who will produce all sorts of new reports, and the accreditors will sign off that they're doing a great job.

Same thing happened with Auburn and North Carolina after they both committed widespread academic fraud to keep athletes eligible.

UNC walking away from that ordeal without much of a scratch was absurd.
