Clearly.   I should have put peace talks in quotes.

Oh, well.  I guess we're in our Munich Agreeement phase.

Still good.  Except as Brisket pointed out, Chamberlain at least had honourable intentions.

Because they’re not real peace talks. It’s just an opportunity for Putin.

Well, it ultimately gave the Brits Churchill as Prime Minister - Chamberlain could not have managed the war half as well as Churchill did.

We aren't Britain and in their case, the war hadn't started yet.

Imagine it's mid 1941 and instead of FDR, we have a malevolent Marx Brother as president.

I don't see any Churchill waiting in the wings here.

Not to mention, once Germany invaded Poland, Chamberlain was forced to confront reality and did not double down.

What he did not do, post German invasion of sovereign nations, is say "Hitler can do whatever the hell he wants."

Sounds like everyone is on the same page for the most part.  I doubt Putin agrees to anything they are proposing though.

Trump Agrees on Ukraine Red Lines With Europe Before Summit With Putin

Now, all that has to happen is Trump honors the deal he made, and doesn't back out of it.  Thank goodness, nothing like that has ever happened, so all is good.

Somehow this is going to end up worse than the deal he negotiated with the Taliban at Camp David to pull out of Afghanistan.

And somehow find someone else to blame it on.

I'm gonna be the outlier and say Putin reacts warmly then blows up some Kiev hospitals that night.

Trump walking into a negotiating session with Putin would be like me walking into the final table at the WSOP against Phil Ivey, Daniel Negraneau and Phil Helmuth or whoever. They wouldn't openly laugh at me, but would just sit there a kill me by a thousand cuts with the greatest of ease.

Trump walking into negotiations is like me walking into a strip club.

Have you ever had your credit card company call you and track you down in the strip club?

Well, it never happened to me.

This friend I was with, however....

Early returns on Alaska are: not much. The vibes from Trump were cranky, sullen. The delegation didn’t eat together, no questions at the press conference. He’s distancing himself from it, putting the ball back in Zelenskyy’s court.

He’s clearly tired with this whole thing and wants a way out and will likely end up lashing out at Ukraine since they are the ones who will respond in some way.

Putin appears to have accomplished what he came for: Trump drops calls for the killing to stop and decides his timeline is no longer in effect; no consequences on the horizon for Russia; and Putin’s core demands are still miles away from what Ukraine can possibly accept for a true peace agreement.  Setting the stage to walk away and blame Zelenskyy.

In Munich Hitler dressed up demands for the Sudetenland by appealing to the demands of the local ethnic German population and their alleged self-determination and desire to unite with Germany.

In fact, the Sudetenland was home to Czechoslovakia’s well-designed and maintained hill country defensive positions which were integral to the smaller nation’s strategy to defend itself and buy time while waiting for Allied assistance.  The Czechoslovaks had been investing in a modern and capable military.

At Munich Hitler was handed Czechoslovakia’s defensive lines and Czechoslovakia lost any faith in Allied assistance. It was defenseless when Germany decided to take the whole thing, which was the plan all along.

Extremely strong parallels here for what Putin wants in Ukraine and why.

Someone is either in a lot of trouble or no trouble at all depending on whether they are career or political appointee.

Actually, there will for sure be a career person found at fault.

Papers with U.S. State Department markings, found Friday morning in the business center of an Alaskan hotel, revealed previously undisclosed and potentially sensitive details about the Aug. 15 meetings between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir V. Putin in Anchorage.

Eight pages, that appear to have been produced by U.S. staff and left behind accidentally, shared precise locations and meeting times of the summit and phone numbers of U.S. government employees.

At around 9 a.m. on Friday, three guests at Hotel Captain Cook, a four-star hotel located 20 minutes from the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage where leaders from the U.S. and Russia convened, found the documents left behind in one of the hotel's public printers. NPR reviewed photos of the documents taken by one of the guests, who NPR agreed not to identify because the guest said they feared retaliation.

I would love that, but I fear it’s only a matter of time until Russia controls Donetsk.

Public printer? Those things keep metadata of everything printed regardless of whether the docs were just left there
