When this deal was first reported, they only mentioned#4 and a future first. Those pick swaps a huge liability for the Lakers and really swings this trade in Nolas favor. Good deal for Nola, OK deal for Lakers.the Lakers have to make the finals with AD or this will be a huge mistake.

When you see it spelled out like this, LA just lost the ability for most of the next decade (LBJ will turn 35 this season, he may not even be on the team when NO is using LA picks) to use the draft and/or picks to not only improve themselves, but to barter the picks off to get help.  What a haul for NO.

Its still not a deal you hesitate to do as the Lakers. GS is a non factor next year and may not contend after that, Houston is probably only a semi factor given CP3's health/decline, and no other team in the west is all that scary. They just need to do an ok job at filling out their roster and they are probably the betting favorites in Vegas to be champs next year or very close to it behind only Milwaukee or Toronto(if Kawhi stays). At the very least they have a legit chance at winning the title for the next 3 years I would say. That's always better than rolling the dice on mid 1st round picks.

The pick swaps means that the Lakers will still have picks late in the first at least every other yr so they will be able to get a few player as long as they scout well.     This isnt like the Nets/C's trade for one simple reason.   AD is 26 and just entering his prime while Pierce and KG were both well over 30 when they were traded to the Nets.   The Nets completely mortgaged their future for 2 seasons at best.     The Lakers will have at least 5-7 yrs of prime AD to go along with at least 2-3 more yrs of LBJ as a top 3 player.    That doesn't eve take into account who else they may manage to get in FA.    Then they will get at least a couple good older players who will join up for minimum deals for a chance to play for a ring.

It was a pretty good return for NO but I don't think they got over on the Lakers like many seem to think.   Time will tell but as far as I am concerned the Lakers won the trade cause they got the best player in the trade BY FAR.

He not a terrible shooter in relation to who?  Ricky Rubio?  Brevin Knight?  Marcus Smart (hey he got better this year)?  Lonzo has some game but he's a really bad shooter.

It's right there in the post you quoted. He shot 33% from 3 on 5 attempts per game. That's not good, but it doesn't hurt the team. He's not some historically bad shooter than people can just freely ignore like people want to make it out to be. Guys like Luka, Trae, Kuzma, and Booker all shot worse than him from 3 on a comparable number of attempts.

He certainly isn't a good shooter but other than his awful free throw shooting, his shooting isn't really worth  bringing up.

Lakers won't be immediately signing a new contract extension with Anthony Davis to save cap space room.

Would be funny if Lakers are a shit show in 2019-2020 season and then Anthony Davis decides to leave the Lakers... 😀

Also AD is exposing himself to the same injury situation as both  KD and Klay just went thru in that he's play his final year under an old contract. Sure hope he doesn't end up with a horrible injury during the 2019-2020 season.

And played 2 somewhat healthy seasons out of 7, while being injured/held out in 20% of his overall games.

So you’re saying it’s still a good deal when he hasn’t been healthy for 5 of his 7 years in the league, or...?

Yes this great short term for the Lakers. But then you’ll have 5 years or more like post Kobe(or even with Kobe) when the Lakers were garbage. I’m not sure winning 1 title with Bron/AD(if they do) is worth 5-7 years of not having a good team.

he gets less money/less yrs if he was sign an extension.   He was never gonna sign one no matter who he got traded to.

Would be hilarious if the lakers daytime drama series turns AD off and he goes clippers in free agency.

Are you serious? pretty sure the D in AD means Drama. He loves it and will fit right in with LA, he demanded a trade mid season and sat out games. He is the definition of Drama man.

Most teams/fans would make that decision 10 out of 10 times.  But Lakers fans are spoiled so they probably wouldn't.  But then again, they've been shit for like 10 years, so who knows.

It's been shown that college FT% is a better indicator of NBA 3pt shooting than college 3pt shooting is. Obviously exceptions to trends exist, but I'd be surprised if being a **BAD** FT shooter into your NBA career doesn't portend bad #'s as a 3pt shooter in your NBA career. I guess we'll see in the years to come.

For now, his 3pt make % only sort of matters because he still doesn't stretch a defense. At all. Luka and Trae may have underwhelming make %'s, but they command defensive attention out to 28-ft on every possession.

Uhm, he's 32.9% which is more like 1.5 out of 5 from 3 per game.  That's a shitty average and it's a SSS.  He's also a 40.6% shooter overall with a historically bad TS% of 48.7% and that's only last year, his rookie year is much worse and historically bad.  That means anytime he shoots from anywhere, it's less than 1 point per shot, which is reserved for awful, awful shooters.  Even Jason Kidd ended up over 50%.  Trae Young, in a rookie year where it took him about 40 games to figure it out had a TS% of 52.4%, Luke 54.5%, Kuzma 54.6%, Booker 58.4%.  So if your point is if they had a 3 point contest then he could hold is own with guys who had shitty 3 point seasons then okay, point ceded.  If it's he's amongst the worst shooters in the league when you account for any time the ball leaves his hand, that would be more apt.  His shot mechanics are atrocious too so it's going to be hard for him to ever be a "good shooter", but I have agreed with others that he's young and could, in time, become competent but only if he learns to shoot FTs.  Again, he has some game (he can definitely play) but with his father's circus, I would have passed.

Both those guys are going to get offered the max so it's instructive and supports his decision to wait until next offseason.

AD and Bron will certainly miss 20+ games each and with a makeshift roster, they won't win the West. IF KL leaves TOR and Butler leaves Philly, Mil losing a few... maybe Brooklyn comes from the East. Damn, this is the most wide open upcoming season i can remember in watching the NBA for 40 years.

what does this mean in plain English?

If the Pelicans and Lakers agreed to do the trade on July 30 instead of July 6, there would be an extra $4 million or so available under the cap for the Lakers, meaning they could offer a max contract to a (example) Jimmy Butler.  By forcing the trade on July 6, that money is not available, and the amount under the cap the Lakers will be on there will not allow for a max contract.

EDIT.  Others beat me to the answer, but this will curtail chasing after a upper-tier free agent. Sure, the Lakers could split up their money on multiple free agents, but you can forget Leonard, Butler, Irving, Walker, etc from coming on board.

Lakers have a compelling team by not chasing a 3rd "max" guy if they can pull in 2-3 guys from the pool of Reddick, Mirotic, Ariza, Tobias Harris, Aminu, Seth Curry, and maybe even Mbah a Moute.

I was thinking this might have a "save the Lakers from themselves" vibe, but that depends on their front office constructing the roster with the correct mid-tier players.

Yeah. They’d probably be better off not going for a third max guys anyways, at least if that third max was going to be someone like Kemba or Toni’s Harris.

What's keeping them from doing the deal early on the 30th?

Danny Green's name has also been brought up along with the names listed above...

Reddick will be with the Nets.  He already lives in Brooklyn.

Love this quote: "It's also scary that if Davis just wanted to live in LA he can leave to a team that makes sense and stay in the Staples Center"

Would be glorious if Lakers implode and AD leaves as a free-agent and goes to Clippers.

Doubt it happens...

They need someone to run point.

Harris probably will cost too much but the rest may be good options.  They need to build some depth because the studs and scrubs strategy generally fails with older guys.

Yes, as I said in both posts you quoted he is a 33% 3 point shooter on 5 attempts per game.

Quote

He's also a 40.6% shooter overall with a historically bad TS% of 48.7%

Again, this goes back to his free throw shooting that is awful. He very well might be the only player in the league whose EFG% is higher than his TS% due to how poor his free throw shooting is. His 48.8% EFG% shows that he's not a good shooter but other than his awful free throw shooting, it's fine.
