Are there any High School (TASO) Football officials on Surly?

I recently joined, now that both of my kids are in or about to be in college. I always wanted to be a FB official, but couldn’t justify it until they were out of the “nest”.

I’ll be the “new” guy this year and get all the sub-varsity games during the week, for experience and all.

Is there anyone here (state wide) that is a current TASO official?

Damned near half to work a full Fall in order to get in the black. I’m excited about it though. There’s a lot of great HS Football in the Hill Country/San Antonio going forward.

How does one get into this? What is the training involved, etc? Are you trying to get college eventually?

I did it for a year in college and my first year after graduation.  I really enjoyed it but the biggest pain in the dick was driving all around Travis & Hays counties during rush hour 2 or 3 times a week.  Also, some of the middle school games start at 5pm or even earlier IIRC, so having to leave work early to go make less money never sat right with me.  My dad has done it for over 20 years as just a side job and loves it.

Costs for a 1st year referee for uniforms and equipment wasn’t “cheap” to get the bare essentials, at least I’ll already have most of it going into season #2.

Can’t you just get a job at footlocker and quit after they give you the uniform?

I did Southwest Football Officials in 95. You were expected to work just about everyday from Tuesday through Friday night. Hey man, I'm just doing this because I love football. It's not my career. On Friday nights you got the priveledge of pulling chains at the varsity games for some of the dumbest rednecks this side of Bryan. The only way to get on a varsity crew was suck up to said rednecks or form your own crew. It took years to be eligible to do high school varsity games. Every other state got you in varsity games your first year, but not the redneck cabal.

I coached Basketball for 10 years at the varsity level and I got to handpick another sport so while other coaches picked the easy way out and chose tennis or cross country I chose to help in football and after I saw the abuse the refs take in football compared to basketball where I can get a Technical I would not want to be a ref at all. The refs take a shit ton more of yelling and coaches bitching and hardly ever throw a 15 yard penalty flag.

Good Luck man!

I officiated TASO games for 10 years in the Fort Worth Chapter and just quit end of 2018, mostly because I'd rather coach my son's youth teams and play more golf. I worked varsity games at 4 of 5 positions - U, L, H, and R.

If you love TXHSFB, it's a good way to make friends and earn pocket money. Good avocation, but don't go in thinking you'll be "professionally" evaluated or have your performances graded fairly or properly by your chapter's "leadership". It is very much a good ol' boys network. Case in point, read this article in the Houston Chronicle about a few of these guys.

My advice to you is to work as many sub-varsity games, including junior high, in your first year or two. For me, game reps were more important than classroom sessions with boring PowerPoint presentations. I also recommend watching as much YouTube and HUDL video as possible. A great Facebook group to join is INSTANT REPLAY. Reddit has some good stuff, too - CFB_Referee, Referees of Redditt, etc.

PM me if you'd like more advice. Good luck!

But, wait, there’s more!

Here's TASO “leadership” in action. Two-week suspension for a racial slur….No, let’s make it 5 weeks including 3 playoff games….No, let’s make it a year-long suspension….

Article reads to me like TASO leaders initially thought only 2 games was appropriate for this behavior/attitude.

Pre season rant.

All you refs suck!   Go get your eyes checked!  How much did the other team pay you?   What time is your tee time with the other teams coaching staff on Sunday?  You should be calling Pop Warner, not Varsity.      Get your heads out of your whatever!

Did I miss any?

Thanks and carry on.

Which chapter are you going to be associated with?

On balance I think most of them do a decent job considering the experience level is kind of lacking due to huge turnovers with many of the chapters across the state due to age in many of these guys.  Plus the game is so dang fast now even at the high school level, stuff is going to get missed.

My only gripe with the different chapters I've see the last few years in our deep playoff runs is some chapters are more picky on things that others kind of ignore or vice versa.   We've had chapters from the RGV, San Antonio, Austin, Coastal Bend, Abilene, Fort Worth, Waco and Houston call some of our playoff games and the Houston chapter loves to throw the flags on what they think are chop blocks.  I mean a couple of years ago we went a whole season without getting flagged for one until the second or third round when they called one of our games and the flags were flying like crazy.  Then we play the following week with a crew from San Antonio and not one flag for chop block.

Hey, coach

You can download your own PDF copy of the NCAA Rule Book here. Use CTR-F to search the rule book for approved rulings.

Rule 2-3-3, Chop Block
ARTICLE 3. A chop block is a high-low or low-high combination block by
any two players against an opponent (not the ball carrier) anywhere on the
field, with or without a delay between blocks; the “low” component is at the
opponent’s thigh or below. (A.R. 9-1-10-I-IV). It is not a foul if the blockers’
opponent initiates the contact. (A.R. 9-1-10-V)

(A.R. 9-1-10-I-IV). Tight end A87 and wingback A43 are leading the play when both
simultaneously block linebacker B17, who is three yards beyond the
neutral zone. (a) Both blocks are above the waist. (b) One block is above
the waist and the other at the knee. RULING: (a) Legal blocks. (b) Foul,
chop block.

(A.R. 9-1-10-V). After snapping the ball, snapper A54 brushes by nose guard B62 on his
way to block a linebacker. A54 makes slight contact with B62, or B62
reaches out and uses his arm to initiate contact with A54. While B62 and
A54 are in contact, right guard A68 blocks B62 at the knee from the front.
RULING: Legal. A54 is not blocking B62. The incidental contact or B62’s
initiating contact does not constitute part of a combination block, and
hence there is no chop block.

There are literally thousand of game officials, coaches, general managers, and quarterbacks on this board.

What do you want to know?

Yeah, you should ask Zavala for tips, because he knows more about officiating and the rule book than anyone else on the planet.
