not a problem.  It's just a very modern contrast that piqued my interest.  Ostensibly, the guy can't afford to feed and shelter himself, but he has a smart phone.

Exactly what I said.  But he’s very obviously not doing everything he can to get off the streets, either.  Which leads me to believe he doesn’t really have a problem being homeless. So yeah, he’s part of the problem.

He could also be getting a government sponsored free or cheap cell phone plan. It really doesn't matter anyways, you cannot fucking function in today's society without a phone. How many functioning payphones have you seen lately?

None.  One can’t function with a regular cell phone?   Not believing it.  Internet at libraries.  There is nothing convenient about being homeless, but I’m sure he’s just browsing LinkedIn looking for work all day.

You're an idiot.

You want these people to go get jobs. Guess what interviewers will ask for so they can contact you if you get the job?

Again, idiot.

Yeah, the cell phone issue is a red herring.

Homeless doesn't necessarily mean no money at all.  A lot of them get some sort of government assistance such as social security, or disability, it's just not enough to get a place to live.

Fuck you.

Plenty of ways to do it, and none of it requires a smart phone.  Join a shelter and have them call there.  People somehow got along with their lives just fine before smart phones came along, you know, 15 years ago. Somehow, some way, the group of Mexicans down at the Home Depot find work without one. Perplexing I know.  Some people are just going to bum. There is a job for every able bodied person who wants one.

Glad I could help.

Maybe we can get them each an expresso machine, to go along with their touchscreen phones. Have to be nice and caffeinated for the job interviews.  Lunacy.   Fresh clothing, shelter, bathing...overrated.

It's just drugs. The more you decriminalize, the worse it gets. Sure, normal people functioning in society should be allowed to alter their mind. People who are shitting in the streets should be put in a place where they cannot get their hands on drugs.

And those people are often one small step away from outright homelessness and the perpetually-downward-cycle that brings.

What is fucking wrong with you?

The best way to end homelessness and the drug/mental health problems associated with it is to invest in supportive housing. It's in the name - they are homeless. Provide a home. Not a hard concept.

It's documented that supportive housing and all that goes with it saves governments money vs the current way of doing, or not doing things. Same as healthcare. Same as environmental/climate policy. The cost of inaction is not something Americans appear to understand very well. And the FOX News crowd crying "SoCiAlIsM," either as a method to herd the mouthbreathers or because they are one themself, just compounds things. The "fiscal conservatives" that come out against it because it costs too much are either blatantly insulting the intelligence of others by expecting them to buy that argument, or are too stupid to realize it's wrong.

They should help him find him a home.

But neither of us know if he’s an addict, mentally ill, just down on his luck, or someone who would rather beg than work.  All we know is he has a nice phone and all the time in the world to use it.

I’m not certain you know what exorbitant means.  Also, shitty human being? That’s rough. I’ve given plenty of money to the beggars around Houston. None of them were playing candy crush on their iPhone, though.

And a large portion of them, and nearly all of the one available to the population in question, do not pay enough for a single adult to get a place to live in a major city - aka where all the jobs are.

That is quite the assessment going off of a photograph. Let me post a picture of one Donald J. Trump posing in front of the Taj Mahal casino so you can assess how much he knows about actually running one.

There’s definitely more to that woman’s story that isn’t being shared but it’s her right to share only what she wants.

in my limited experience with people with addition issues, they constantly have ID or other document problems. And when you attempt to point out how they can start to resolve them, they have a million reasons why it won’t work. As in they have warrants out for their arrest somewhere and can’t risk walking into the DPS office.

i don’t buy that a woman goes from 20 years as a nurse in Michigan to homeless in Houston in a few months. Unless you’ve already burned every relationship in your past.

Yes, shitty human being. Yes, exorbitant.

The idea that "some people are just going to burn" is bullshit puritanism.

There is currently a 3.7% unemployment rate.  Why the fuck do we need a federal job guarantee program?
Specifically, to this thread there absolutely has to be something willfully omitted.  The whole thing reads like the wheelchair vetern at the Orioles game story from The Wire.

Have you ever applied for a job and entered “none” in the “residential address” section?

Lol. You are so fucking hyperbolic it’s hard to take you serious.  Dollars to donuts my family spends considerably more time and money on charitable efforts.  We just choose to our to put our efforts into people who never had a chance.

Again. LOL.  Flattering, but incorrect. Maybe check the new car fanatic or watch fanatic thread over the last page or two. Again, hyperbole.  But what else should we expect.

Seems you got out a bit over your skis. I said “some people are going to BUM”.  And this is true. Ask the several able bodied mid 20’s couples that park their ass at Eldridge/10 every day from 1000-1300, then leave once the lunch rush is over. One in particular would be very qualified for the receptionist anywhere I’ve ever worked. There to catch the lunch crowd then gone. In their 20’s. Able bodied.  Bums.    So, Puritanism?

Yes, the idea that some people are just predestined to be scum is puritanism. I didn't mean "burn" as in hell, but that predestination sets out our class or status. Classist bullshit.

Well, it isn't addiction issues per se.  However, once one's addiction causes one to pass through a certain bottom, ID and other accouterments of society do tend to fall by the wayside.

And I do fully believe that there is a segment of the homeless population that truly enjoys being homeless, or rather, the complete lack of response to authority.  It may be driven by florid mental illness (schizophrenia) and/or personality and behavior disorders.  In other words, some of them are going to have to be coerced off the streets.  Simply providing housing and support isn't going to cut it.

Perhaps true for many currently suffering from the institutionalization of their status, but with the proper supports and safety nets it's not the case moving forward.

She’s appears to be in her 20’s, appears moderately attractive with an athletic figure, and I’m making an assumption she can answer a phone or smile and say, “can you sign here, I’ll page John and he’ll come up and meet you. Please have a seat. Can I interest you in a water or coffee?”

She would probably have to give up her 3 hour/day  panhandling gig, to make it work.

Yeah a reasonably hot 30 yr old female with trouble finding employment/staying employed?   If there is any doubt, there is no doubt.  It's sad but true.

Homeless man with a smartphone charging from a private outlet,  quite the contrast.

Saw one with 2 iPhone's walk up with his beer at 2PM, sit on a wheelchair and pull out his sign asking for cash at 183 & jamestown. I make a u turn and have to pull over because an ambulance and fire truck are hauling ass. Not for an accident, to help a person living in a bad ass tent on the southwest corner of lamar/183. She could not get up. I parked by Nuevo MX and walk over to see what's up. A firefighter tells me they're leaving and he's sick of these non-emergency calls. Felt pretty bad for him and his crew.

This city is falling apart.
