Don't do this.  Medical professionals actually need those and they are already in short supply.

As do actual sick people. Earlier this week, found out one of the kids had strep, and another one had strep AND the flu. Went to pick up their meds and wanted to grab a few masks to keep them from coughing all over the place and getting the baby sick. Pharmacist snorted in disgust/sympathy when I asked if they had any. Nope! They can’t keep em in stock

Have we seen an update in recovered yet? Death numbers jumping like they are is particularly concerning

6,600 and outpacing the deaths.   If you just combine deaths with recovered (passed all of the tests and discharged), every day the percentage of deaths vs recovered is dropping, so that’s good.   And recovery takes longer than dying, so it will continue jumping up a decent amount everyday.   Plus, if you look at numbers outside of Wuhan, the deaths drop dramatically.

Dumb amnesty question: So if it’s like the flu, potentially the recovered could just get it again in a couple months? Or is that still tbd?

Shanghai is starting to build temp hospitals.   That makes 12 Chinese cities building coronavirus hospitals.

The US would still be in the contractor bidding phase.

what exactly is a temporary hospital? modern internment facility?

In theory, they are supposed to be for the less severe cases (for which there isn’t room in the regular hospitals), and to get them out of their homes.  They don’t provide top-tier care, basically go there to get better on your own, or go downhill and die.

So yeah, internment facility.  But not like the stadiums and other public facilities being used in Wuhan.

I don't think we know yet. Some viruses you get life long immunity and some only weeks/months.

Plus they can count all the deaths but only those that got tested and were positive get recorded as recovered, not accounting for mild cases that didn’t get tested early on or ran their course while the person was quarantined in their home.

Normally. We are preparing - as we should. I am not sure the science is settled on the severity. But we are actively preparing. HHS has turned to the DoD.

If you saw the video posted earlier it is a holding facility with little medical care and no ability to treat severe symptoms.  AND you can not leave once you go inside.  So get better with little help or die.

I think there is some compelling evidence that they are only counting a fraction of the deaths

I support various HHS agencies and we have been doing nothing but prepping mobile operating centers for a couple weeks now.

It may not be in the news but the US is getting after it.

So, when you have people in the beds to your right, your left, behind you, and in front of you, all sneezing and coughing and spraying you with bodily fluids, you either get busy living, or get busy dying

Interesting article, but maybe a little "Cloaky"...

"Some of the nation’s leading public-health experts assembled before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday morning with some worrisome warnings: The dangerous Wuhan novel coronavirus is probably already in the United States in greater numbers than we know and should show itself in clusters in the coming weeks. There’s reason to doubt its spread will die down when the weather warms. And it could ultimately affect hundreds of thousands of Americans."

The scary part is that more than likely it is already taken hold in N Korea and could ravage 60-80% of their population due to their lack of legitimate medical facilities or supplies and the inability for China to provide them at the current time.

Does Rocketman reach out to S Korea or the US for help and what chaos will ensue if the virus spreads to their ruling class or worse Rocketman himself.

Yeah, it’s a bit worrisome, some of the shit he’s already said.   Don’t need him getting medical advice from Fox and Friends

On the other hand, he’s a germaphobe, and this thing hits older people harder.  So he might overreact, in a good way

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/13/health/coronavirus-cdc-robert-redfield-gupta-intv/index.html

Quote

As an outbreak of a novel coronavirus has swept through Hubei province, China, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been preparing for its worst case scenario -- a widespread outbreak of illnesses in the United States.

"Right now we're in an aggressive containment mode," CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta in an interview on Thursday.

"We don't know a lot about this virus," he said. "This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community-based transmission."

As of Thursday, there have been 15 cases of the novel coronavirus confirmed in seven states: eight in California; two in Illinois; and one in Arizona, Washington, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Texas.

Exactly. I don’t know why anyone trust the figures being put out by the Chinese government.

My wife has a longtime friend (not a drop of drama queen in this woman) whose sister and BIL are missionaries and school teachers in China (not Wuhan area). They were getting increasingly concerned about the Chinese government crackdowns on religion (Muslims especially), Hong Kong, etc., to the extent that a few months ago, they gave her visiting parents important belongings other than passports to take back to the US ahead of their anticipated departure which was scheduled early this year. Then when this coronavirus hit, they self-quarantined as best they could and have to wait until they can leave.

The local crematorium has seen an obvious increase in activity,  and they are extremely worried that the government is monitoring communications to the outside world. Even before this outbreak, they felt the need to speak in code to their friends and family back home, and their family is so concerned that they won’t even speak about it near their own phones. Perhaps that is an overreaction, but maybe not.

She said the filth and pollution are both worse than they anticipated, so that adds to their doubts that this outbreak is anywhere near contained.

To my knowledge, being a missionary in China is still illegal, so they were probably supposed to be speaking in code anyway. Of course this probably varies depending on whether or not they are independent or working through an organization like the IMB, but all the missionaries I've talked to who work in China have always just referred to it as East Asia.

https://www.barrons.com/articles/chinas-economic-data-have-always-raised-questions-its-coronavirus-numbers-do-too-51581622840

Anomalies had shown up in China’s coronavirus numbers even before the change in methodology. For instance, the number of deaths reported appeared to correspond to a simple mathematical formula to a very high accuracy, according to a quantitative-finance specialist who ran a regression of the data for Barron’s. A near-perfect 99.99% of variance is explained by the equation, this person said, referring to a statistical measure known as r-squared. That’s a fancy way of saying that the data updating the number of deaths was almost perfectly predictable. “This never happens with real data, which is always noisy,” the person said.”
