  1. Goddamnit, how many fucking times are you people going to make me post this? This "maybe if we go slightly easier on him we can get some GOP support" is the absolute dumbest fucking idea in the world. Dumber than the people who literally think the world is flat. Dumber than people who think vaccines cause autism. Dumber than 9/11 truthers. The GOP is an organized criminal syndicate supported primarily by racists and religious fanatics who want to see the rest of us die and burn in hell for eternity. We wouldn't get them to agree with us on what to name a post office if we proposed naming it after Jefferson Davis. If we tried to pass a non-binding resolution that said "water is wet" they'd tell us to get fucked. They've decided to ignore literally all of science and their own lived experiences because we said "holy shit, we're overheating the planet and it's killing people." They're an apocalyptic criminal cult and it's literally impossible to cooperate with them. Stop pretending otherwise.

  2. Mrs. NNM decided a pre-Thanksgiving cleaning of the oven was in order. So she used the self-cleaning function, which basically just superheats the oven for 5 hours, incinerating anything in it. Well, she forgot that she had a silicone oven liner on the bottom of the top oven. Basically, a little shelf on the bottom to catch drips, crumbs, etc. When you superheat a silicone oven liner, you incinerate it, and the particles get plastered all over the sides, top, bottom, and door of the oven, and get sucked into the convection and fan system. Making the oven unusable forevermore. And because it's a dual oven setup, both are now trash. And these are not old ovens. We built the house 3 years ago. And upgraded the appliances. So now we're looking at about 5k to replace perfectly good, upgraded ovens. A day before Thanksgiving.

  3. Remember, what's important is that anyone opposing Trump be totally civil, polite, and downright obsequious to Trump voters, but Trump and his supporters should absolutely shit all over everyone they want to, because that's how you MAGA, and if you don't want to MAGA, you hate America and we all see through you. Fuck your rules and decorum, Trumpkins and GR. And fuck you. You have two sets of rules. Take both of them and cram them up your ass, where they will surely be able to keep your head company.

  4. The Dems are certainly going to make mistakes in this process. If you only focus on them, and judge them against perfection, you may be tempted to believe these gaffes will sink them. But look at the other side for a moment. Trump and the whole White House are under tremendous pressure. Watch five minutes of Trump's 53 minute "interview" with Fox and Friends. He's a crazy old man, rambling about debunked conspiracy theories. Keep. Him Talking. The dude has literally stopped showing up at the office, and is running his impeachment defense from his living quarters. We are about two weeks away from him doing a press conference in an robe with kleenex boxes for slippers. And it's not just Trump. Mulvaney's damage control included announcing quid pro quo from a podium. Pompeo and Perry, two major players in this, are resigning. Bolton resigned and is considering turning state's evidence. Trump has no identifiable press secretary to work the press. His first personal attorney is in prison and talking shit about him. His second personal attorney is waiting to be indicted, and may be as crazy as Trump is. Trump is alone, confused, and unhealthy. I'm in no particular hurry for this to resolve. (I would still support a deal that includes a Republican rebuke of the President, but not because I think the Dems are in trouble.)

  7. We have no need to talk politics in our family. In my youth I held youthful ideals learnt from the dueling society layabouts, such as "Free the Peasants." "Free them from WHAT," crowed Grandmother, "If they become free, they'll only drink, which they accomplish magnificently as matters stand." I resented it at the time, but several years with private tutors (hard men, fair men, Prussian veterans, several of them) whipped such whimsies out of me. Father, of course, died wenching, and not from a bear. Mother's phrenologist diagnosed her with depressed sublimity, leaving me in charge of her priests, mummified monkey-dolls, and the workings of the entire estate. Brother was blinded in his laboratory-- who could have known he'd light a bunsen burner next to the parcel of 76.2mm mortar shells?-- and therefore could not inherit. Sister spent a month of her Grand Tour "working" as an actress in Baden-Baden, and though later properly married off to a chinless apothecary, seems unlikely to conceive. So no, politics are quite settled in our family.

  9. Well, I screwed up. Thanks Tom. I got pissy and drunk after the Baylor debacle. My wife was pissed off because she just found out her mother had purchased airline tickets to visit over Christmas w/o asking. She'll be here the 23rd through 30th. Problem? We're hosting friends the 23rd and 24th, then heading to TN for a week - to the SAME GD PLACE HER MOTHER LIVES. (My daughter goes to MTSU; most of wife's family lives in Nashville/Clarksville.) We've done this same routine EVERY FUCKING YEAR SINCE 1997. So now my wife feels extremely guilty. In my drunken stupor I told my wife not to worry about it because her mom is kind of a "beeeottchhh". That didn't go over very well.

  11. Hey, just in case you were wondering whether we've descended into pure, unabashed evil that (bonus) is actually celebrated by "Christian" leaders.... https://www.patheos.com/blogs/lovejoyfeminism/2019/11/metaxas-donald-builds-the-wall-recalls-of-nazi-childrens-books.html?fbclid=IwAR23bdqRwY0adv6bYh6CtlmHZLUYyIWgskctCUcFEHBiQL1hpt0JZ3iNEAA Isn't it fun how this CHRISTIAN author depicts [checks notes] Central Americans fleeing their violent countries? Nothing like a little dehumanization of "the other." You know, one of the basic steps in ethno-nationalism and genocide. We're the fucking bad guys. We're looking at the Nazi playbook, and instead of recoiling in horror, we're saying "dude, cool! We should run those plays!" Fuck this country, fuck anyone who supports this fucking administration, and perhaps most importantly, fuck those "Christian" leaders who champion this shit. We have "Christian" leaders championing propaganda that LITERALLY DEPICTS "the immigrant" and "the least of these" as monsters. It's as opposite of the Gospel as you can get, and they perversely claim that it's actually a Christian stance.

  15. I know this is a common sentiment, and one that most people reflexively agree with at first glance, but this is a serious question: Why? How does the football coach's personality/ethics affect your life in any way? Football exists solely in my life for entertainment. I'm tired of having to change out of burnt orange before leaving the house on Saturday nights so I don't have to deal with the smirk and "what happened to y'all today?" questions from strangers. I just want to win, and I don't care who does it.

  16. If you look at the overlap of much of that movement (not all of it, but much of it), it was based on selfishness and self-indulgence. Free love and let's do all the drugs weren't exactly movements meant to better other people -- they were meant to satisfy individual wants and desires. And the impact on anyone else be damned. So, "I deserve everything that I want, nobody better threaten that, and to hell with everyone else." That might as well be the Trumpism motto, and it overlaps perfectly with a sizable percentage of the Woodstock generation. Selfishness and narcissism are the bedrock values of generation Trump.

  18. I feel like I know what this is setting up for, and it's going to do me in as a fan for a few years. After ten years of this shit, I just can't care enough to invest time anymore if we make the decisions I think we'll make. Herman will shuffle the chairs. We'll lose some recruits and current players in the process. Next year won't be worse than this year, but it will be the same or marginally better. The excuse will be that we just replaced all of the assistants and had some attrition and we need more time to adjust. So we'll give one more year, because sugar bowl. The next year we won't have Sam and we'll really crater. Recruiting will have fallen off a cliff as recruits see they're talking to a dead coach walking. At this point we'll finally pull the plug, with the team and recruiting in shambles, because we opted for "stability." I say all of this 100% not trying to be overdramatic, but because it's what I'm genuinely concerned will happen. It's pretty damn close to what we did with Mack. Feels like we're ready to start our ten year journey all over again and we've learned nothing from the first time around. Mack deserved to go the year after bama just like Tom deserves to go a year after Georgia. But we won't, because stability and stuff.

  19. This is hands down the best scene of the movie, and the best scene of any John Hughes movie. It does a great job of capturing the evolving emotions Steve Martin's character feels. There's reconciliation and gratitude when he and Del are saying goodbye, a sense of relief when the train pulls away, the anticipation of seeing his family, looking back on the past days' events with laughter, and the sudden realization that Del might not have a family to go home to. It still gets me.

  22. His cult members don't care. He says it and it is the gospel truth. Human beings never evolve or change. This is no different than Germans thinking Hitler was their savior. These idiots at these rallies really believe Dotard was sent by God to make their lives better and to make the lives of brown-skinned people a living hell. We are dealing with the worst of humanity right now. There is no rosy endng to this. We are descending into the depths of fascism and are on the path to where a significant portion of the populace looks at Dotard as a God-king. If you study history at all you know that great empires throughout history are done from within. We are watching the sunset of America having a good voice on the world stage coming to an end because millions of our fellow citizens chose hate and bigotry over the greater good of our fellow human beings. We are the terrible human beings we have said that other countries are. It's us now and it is not pretty.

  23. Walked into Stillwater BBQ in Abilene today around 5 and the place was empty. There was a bit of a dust storm rolling in and the guy working there said that usually keeps people away. Ordered 1 lbs of brisket, regular sausage and jalapeño cheese. My pops wanted a couple of sides so got green beans and beans. The sides were good but nothing special. The brisket was really great. Great flavor and bark. Moist but not overly fatty. I was impressed. Sausage was also very good and I was happy the jalapeño cheese was spicy. In fact spicier than most places I have been too. Really solid bbq meal.

  24. In summary, fuck being civil to your club. You traffic in lies and cruelty, shrug your shoulders and laugh. Your grandchildren are going to find out about what you supported, and they are going to be disgusted by their grandfather. Your legacy will be shame and disgust. All of it deserved. That ain't whack job -- that's reading the writing on the wall. Written in blood shed by your club. They aren't waiting for the 2020 election. They're taking action now, and they have been for some time.

And then that little fucker would say "But you will all be one game worse than Indiana, and two games worse than Minnesota!" and fly away on his little donkey or whatever asshole leprechauns do.

  31. Actually, he is, because he's suggesting that Texas is "beyond salvage." Nobody on Surly is suggesting that, because it's a stupid thing to say. Does anyone without an agenda believe that's the case? Why on Earth would Texas be "beyond salvage?" Baylor was 1-11 two seasons ago and they're 10-1 now. They're clearly not "beyond salvage" so why would Texas be? Finebaum's a mediot and a shill with an agenda. Anyone stupid enough to buy that horseshit is probably "beyond salvage" but Texas certainly isn't. Texas is nothing more than the correct coach away from success. I'm not saying it's easy to identify that coach, but it's not like it hasn't happened before.

  34. That’s how I spent my Saturday afternoon. 18 years old. College freshman. One of my daughter’s high school classmates. This was the SECOND of her classmates to take his/her own life. Telling her over Facetime from almost 2,000 miles away when we got the news…not being to hold her as she cried in anguish….that sucked. The church was full. People from his parents’ generation. People – kids, really – from his generation. Their presence killed me. They were regular, odd, unique, some with green hair, some dressed perfectly for church. So many of these were the "different" kids -- the artists, who feel so deeply. The unusual, who don't fit into convention. And so many of them just wracked with sobs and grief. At every quiet moment, cries both soft and strong echoed off the walls. So many of them who were just like him. So many who are loved and supported, but don’t always feel it in the moment. I sat next to my son, who is having his own struggles with being that age, and how to feel, and being overwhelmed and depressed, and the stark terror of being a parent sat in my bones. I just want to keep him alive. I can’t tell you how sad it all felt. How sad I felt. How discouraging it was, to have lost a light. How helpless it makes us all feel. The moment – the communal moment of grief, of shared love for one who was lost, and of love for one another, whether we knew each other before or not – was powerful, and important. All we really have is each other. Please, love each other. Be kind. Those are active verbs. There are 100 moments in a day when we can choose apathy or even callousness/cruelty over kindness. Choose kindness. Some of the most profound moments in my life are moments when someone showed me kindness when I most needed it. I know I’m not alone in that respect. Be kind. Please. It matters.

  36. I bake the pies for the Thanksgiving meal and have always done so. For a number of years we lived in the upper Midwest and I would bake pumpkin pie and apple pie for the meal because we could easily get apples from the fall crop. Sometimes I would make pecan pie if my late mother would ship them to us since she could get the good ones easily. When we moved back south, I have switched to making one pumpkin and one pecan. The quality of pecans does make a difference. My husband isn't all that fond of pecan pie (the sweetness) and I like to make what he likes, so it's why I make two pies. Since we usually have company that loves pecan pie, they take care of it. If I had my druthers, I would make pies over cakes, but my youngest is crazy for tres leches cake so I make that for him. I've also made buttermilk pie for Thanksgiving, but I've found people either love it or hate it. I try and make the rolls, pies and do prep the day before, and then Thursday will get up and peel the taters, prep the dressing, and the sweet potato casserole. Since we are having a lot of guests this year, the turkey is smoked so it's going to be an easy day since I won't be responsible for that. Usually by now I would have started my boozecake (home-made fruitcake soaked in brandy) so that it can sit for several weeks but I caught a cold and am behind. I may not do it this year but the guys at the auto shop seem to really like it as do my husband's colleagues and the teachers at the schools. Probably because it isn't safe to drive after you eat it and it doesn't have the green and red cherries in it.

Politics of fat kids. But hey, "Be Best", that's better than improving school lunches, right?
