  1. I try not to take kids like Tristan Stevens for granted. Felt like he got slighted by the MLB, came back, had about as bad a season as he could have imagined and had likely come to the realization that this is probably the last baseball he will play. Went to Pierce about trying to help the team out of the bullpen which was god awful for us in conference play and has found himself. What sports is about, never give up.

  6. For posters like this guy who are bagging on the movie, I feel it’s important to describe the importance of the original Top Gun movie to this country. And apologize for the novel, but I’d like to share a personal story to demonstrate it. I saw the original Top Gun with my dad, who was an Air Force pilot for twenty years. It was one of the few movies I ever saw with him, and it was also the last. When that movie came out, it was legendary for several reasons. The fighter scenes at the time were very advanced Hollywood cinema, and it was game-changing from that perspective. But more importantly, the country had gone through the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam war, the Iran hostage crisis, the 70’s inflation surge, and the country was still pretty negative about the military. That movie recaptured American pride. My dad enjoyed the movie and walked out happier than I’d seen him in a awhile. I found out a long time later that he had ejected from his fighter jet during the Korean war and broken his back on the canopy, just like Goose died in the movie. He was in traction for a year in Japan. He never said a word about it after the movie. Like many of the greatest generation, he just quietly kept it to himself. The other incredibly important impact of that movie was that it was cool again to be associated with the military. My dad came home from Vietnam being spit on and yelled at by his country. After Top Gun, our military folks received a lot more respect. I actually had two close friends I worked with who were engineers who literally quit right after the movie came out and joined the military as fighter pilots. That movie had a major impact, and this one was a nice way for all of us to remember it all.

  8. This is Kemune in Northern Iraq, just NW of Mosul. The lake created by the Mosul Dam on the Tigris has receded due to drought, and archaeologists found this amazing discovery. A part of it was actually first discovered in 2019 but they only had a faint idea that this much of the ancient city was preserved. Dating all the way back to the late Sumerian era. This is likely from the Mittani Empire, a largely-forgotten (mostly due to lack of evidence) but powerful force in 1.500 B.C. Sumeria. A palace is likely the core of the ruins, with enormous storehouses, that suggested that this culture did frequent trade with Egypt and other pre-Assyrian powers. Where I dig this especially is that the Mittanis were most likely a Hurrian-speaking people, which is Biblically significant. The Hivites and Horites of Genesis 14 were Hurrian speakers, and the Hivites were one of the seven nations which Joshua had conquered during his Canaan campaign (Deut. 7). But maybe most significantly, when Abraham's family (father Terah) left Ur, they settled in Haran (Gen. 11). Haran was a majority Hurrian-speaking city and likely either Mittani or in close contact with them. And in fact, many of the "weird" practices we find in most of Genesis concerning Abraham and the culture (app. Ch. 15-31) were not specific to the Hebrew culture, but rather freely exchanged as a part of Mittite culture. (one of my "big things" in history is to study how esp. in the Old Testament, what we determine as "weird" or "bizarre" customs or incidents in the accounts of the Israelites, were actually quite common and understood as long-forgotten customs in contemporary cultures that they picked up, and anything but "bizarre" to those peoples... e.g. Sarah giving her slave Hagar to Abraham, and his reluctance to send them (Hagar and Ishmael) out once Sarah was pregnant with Isaac, was very much based on Nuzi law regarding barrenness and the substitute procedure. We tend to think of Israelites as living in "their own" culture, and while that's certainly true in part, it's absolutely not the entire truth. Joseph flourished in Egyptian culture, and Abraham had to come from some earthly culture, so it's pretty likely that he adopted a lot of his habits from these Mittite customs and laws). Anyway it's not out of the realm of possibility to think that this city, although dating slightly before Abraham's traditional dates, was likely in existence in some form and that Abraham would almost certainly have known about it, if not visited it.) https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/after-drought-3-400-year-old-city-in-iraq-resurfaces

  10. Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine is losing 60-100 soldiers per day. That is above peak Vietnam War death rates. In World War II we lost around 200 per day across a global theater. This war is unlike anything the world is familiar with intensity and even length at this point. Ukraine also had at least as bad of a demographic time bomb as Russia had before the war. Ukraine’s edge is a broader mobilization but this is a catastrophic, generation changing war already. Relevant because as much as we want to talk about changing energy policy, I don’t think either side can keep up this level of combat intensity for as long as it would take to make a difference. The West needs to work on getting Ukraine what it needs to win on the battlefield. More Russian casualties, fewer Ukrainian casualties.

  12. My kid was in AISD. Those kids adapted just fine, enjoyed life, and thrived while wearing masks. I would often have to remind my kid he could take his mask off after a few minutes into our commute home. He's not a big ol sensitive ball sack nor are his peers. It wasn't that big of a deal. They don't care that much. Sure My kid is happy to be mask free, sure the chick he kinda crushed on has a jacked grill and looks better masked, Sure Some kids still wear masks and nobody gives a fuck. They are largely kind supportive and go about thier business. These junk peeping so you can play an amateur sport , culture war starting weirdos need hobbies. Kids are resilient with support.

  14. He got the gun because had access to his parents’ gun safe, meaning it was NOT secure. If we had a “safe storage” law, the parents would face criminal liability….and perhaps they would have made sure he couldn’t access the safe to avoid violating that law.

  15. Well, I finally watched the 3 episodes and then read this thread. I'm very sorry to have to admit that I never should have read this thread. Goddamn y'all are a bunch of brisket fucking texans on a politics thread. Can't y'all just watch something and enjoy it without needing to pick apart every little piece. I watched it with my 13 year and we both loved it, especially EP. 3. I'll continue watching the show, but I'm not sure I can say the same about reading this thread.

  16. I have to imagine that every western air asset within striking distance of the ukriane front is pretty much armed, fueled, and ready. If Russia wants to lose the rest of its men and materiel in the next 48 hours, striking a NATO city would be the way to make that happen.

  18. When you run shit flat out, you tend to have problems at times. Plus you are generally working with shit that will burn slash blow up regularly. That being said, he had the biggest individual one day run through beef packing plants in almost 3 years, and starting to run significantly ahead of last year's levels with more capacity to come this summer. Pork production is has improved significantly into the tightest number time of the year as well, and chicken numbers have almost caught back up to pre-bird flu levels. Wholesale beef and pork prices are below year ago levels as well, with cold storage stocks almost at pre-pandemic levels. If you want to be scared be scared, but the meat side of food processing is kicking ass right now under the circumstances.

  21. This movie won't have the cultural impact of the original, and many of the shortfalls mentioned above have merit. But so what. It's the best movie I've seen in years, and I look forward to the last installment of the trilogy in 2050. If you don't like this movie, you have darkness in your soul.

  30. I got this one yesterday. It’s a 2019 Vintera 50s Stratocaster in Sonic Blue, ahem. 7.5 radius, vintage frets. Soft V neck profile that is really comfortable, almost U shape. A very well made Mexican Fender. It has a glossy polyester finish which separates it from the higher priced American reissues and Custom Shop models, but overall a well put together vintage spec Strat. I got an incredible deal on it that I couldn’t pass up. It still had the stock setup and strings, protective plastic on the back cover. I polished the frets and put new strings on it just now, haven’t even plugged it in yet.

  31. People who crap on the Director's Cup are idiots. UT wants the best students and student/athletes to come on campus. Success in other sports other than football or basketball is extremely important. These successful athletes go on and represent the University in places like the Olympics (swimming and T&F), major golf tournaments (Speith, Scheffler), etc. All this is damn important for UT's brand recognition nationally and internationally.
