  1. Burton and Wells said not to be surprised if Cook cancels his Oregon OV and ends up in Austin with Arch this weekend.

  2. This political jousting with our energy security is exhausting, pointless, and dangerous. We need both. We need both to work well. We need both to be reliable. We need to be open to maximizing the efficiencies of both. We need to work on minimizing the environmental impact of both. Both. Not one or the other. This isn't a winner take all cage match. For energy security and stability, we need both.

  3. 40% of Texas electricity not coming from fossil fuel: "Texans are cranking on the air conditioning this week amid an unusually early heat wave, setting new records for electricity demand in the state, which surpassed 75 gigawatts on Sunday and smashed the 2019 record. Texas grid operator ERCOT projects it could approach that peak again on Tuesday. But unlike previous extreme weather events in Texas which led to deadly blackouts, the grid is holding up remarkably well this week. Several experts told CNN that it's owed in large part to strong performances from wind and solar, which generated 27 gigawatts of electricity during Sunday's peak demand -- close to 40% of the total needed." ..... "Texas is, by rhetoric, anti-renewables. But frankly, renewables are bailing us out," said Michael Webber, an energy expert and professor at the University of Texas at Austin. "They're rocking. That really spares us a lot of heartache and a lot of money." "Wind and solar would not have been available in years in the past, so the growing capacity helps to alleviate reliance on natural gas and coal," said Jonathan DeVilbiss, operations research analyst at the US Energy Information Administration. Not only have renewables helped keep the power on during a scorching and early heatwave, they have also helped keep costs low. Prices for natural gas and coal are high amid a worldwide energy crunch, but renewables -- powered by the wind and sun -- have no fuel cost. "Because the price of wind and sunlight hasn't doubled in the past year like other resources, they are acting as a hedge against high fuel prices," said Joshua Rhodes, an energy researcher at UT Austin." https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/14/us/texas-energy-record-solar-wind-climate/index.html

  6. Do you not remember when the state froze a year and a half ago and renewables were blamed as the primary cause of the failure? The real revolution with renewables will be improved energy storage capacity so we can get more flexibility from them

  7. The national anthem is also dumb. Shitty song that changes 8 octaves that nobody can sing worth a shit. If it's special stop playing it so fucking much. Put the ball on the tee or throw out the first pitch and play ball, but enough of the fake bro country patriotism. Calm yourselves Slorches; I said what I said.

  9. He's also wrong, because the NCAA just did, in fact, stop him from doing it, as the singer at an upcoming tournament baseball game. One of the may problems with ags, is that they just have no basic understanding of acceptable behavior. They treat every venue like their own barn, and every situation like it's a sheep-humping rally. Zero situational awareness. That, combined with their insistence on making every single thing about themselves, invariably results in stupid shit like this.

  14. Nuclear is the most economically viable energy generation and if you leverage thorium it's incredible. The biggest lie in nuclear is how dangerous it is and how much there is a waste problem, it's only a problem because of the fuel they decide to use and enrich.

  16. Every time I see Trump Jr. in the news - and every time I see this thread bumped to the top - I think that it must have been really unfortunate and sad for him to have been the child of a morally bankrupt malignant narcissist. My father was just the opposite of his father in every way. My dad was quiet, decent, kind, and always attentive and supportive to his children. My father followed the teachings of his faith, he showed wisdom, and he never took advantage of people. If you were too frail to mow your yard, or if you accidentally left your wallet in a restaurant, or if your car was broken down in a remote area - you would definitely have wanted my father there, because he would cut your grass, he would go out of his way to give your wallet back, and he would stop and make sure you were okay. Anyway, my default attitude toward Jr has always been pity... but then I read the story below the headline, or I watch the Twitter video, and there's just no denying - whether by nature or by nurture - he's really just such a piece of shit.

  17. More importantly, why are people quoting Futureman?
    11 points
  18. cacti, i quoted you because I had originally missed your response to me and had not responded to your message...but 99% of my post was generalized towards the political messaging over gas prices, not towards your post in particular. you and i see things pretty much the same way. economically, this is an important point. we haven't reached the point of material demand destruction yet because of summer timing more than anything. but it will happen soon. anecdotally, even the wulaw's of the world are altering their RV plans to limit his family being a menace to society only in texas instead of the entire united states. but a lot of people's behavior hasn't changed yet because of timing. it will...and the market will respond as it usually does. it is complete bullshit and an attractive, but idiotic political messaging weapon that democrats use with some effectiveness but in all reality, it misses the mark just as bad as this republican messaging that joe biden is somehow responsible for universal economic and market principles playing out. if it costs $10 million for a company to drill a 10,000 ft horizontal on leasehold it owns, and the forward pricing deck it uses in its economic evaluations are at $2.50 gas and it has a net to working interest 15% irr after all the capex, loe, and post-production costs, the company might drill it with a baseline expectation of making that. and if they make that, they make that. if the market moves sharply as it has and suddenly they can get $8 gas (completely unrealistic because the contracts are likely hedged), then the return they happen to make is significantly greater and it looks like they are way more profitable. that doesn't mean they are price gouging...they were just a beneficiary of the markets changing. but the risk exists the other way as well...gas goes to $1.00 (again, putting aside marketing realities), then they are fucked on the deal and lose a fortune (which no one ever talks about, including opportunistic democrats). it's just a market outcome. go look at e&p, field services, and midstream bankruptcies from 2015-2021. there are tons because they market killed them. buy a shitload of leases in a play to develop in 2013 for a billion dollars based on reserve valuations using $100 oil. go develop them in 2014 and by 2015, you have $35 oil. billion dollar asset now worth $400 million and you're bankrupt. now the pendulum has swung the other way and profitability will be up significantly when all the 2022 10-Ks hit the press. but that isn't gouging. that is a market result. collusion and market manipulation through supply control is certainly something else and is completely legitimate. but there are no e&p companies with the type of market power to do that...not even xom, cvx, cop, shell, bp, etc... there are too many oxys and apaches and citations in the u.s. that would go gobble that up and produce. that type of manipulation comes from sovereign nations or junta decisions like saudi arabia/opec and russia. all that said, i think what is remarkably ironic about the republican messaging on biden causing all this inflation (besides the fact that they know it works because their base is comprised of people willing to die to overturn an election on donald fucking trump's behalf or they are disingenuous clowns like IV), is that o&g prices in the u.s. are about as close as one can get to an expression of the market doing precisely what they pretend they want according to their former political philosophy of market economics before they decided that the platform would simply become whatever capricious bullshit donald trump was thinking about that day. the o&g market is pretty fucking efficient and price changes are a results of simple, intro to microeconomic variables. those variables are often maniupulated by the saudi arabia's of the world or russia invading another country but u.s. domestic energy is really, really close. so when the market is saying "hey, the demand is outpacing the supply here, time for the equilibrium to move up the curve," the republicans instead of applauding the market doing its job to create demand destruction, they say "welcome to joe biden's america." ironic.
