  1. Re. My daughter’s experiences. I have learned the SS number mention referenced a file specific to an individual researcher, which is known as an ORCID file. This file contains all of an individual’s published research, all who conduct research have such a file, and the SS number differentiates between two researchers who share the same name. And, yes, the fact that my daughter was employed in a program Republicans have labeled DEI has been added to my daughter’s research file. UT legal came to the conclusion that employing my daughter in another job leaves them vulnerable to the charge that β€œDEI hires” were just shuffled around. M daughter makes clear that she was told this notation in her file will sabotage any interview at a research university. Too bad. So sad. Here is the offending language of the Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) program she was enrolled in: ”The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Health San Antonio provides an individualized, diverse and multidisciplinary learning environment for students to develop the knowledge, skills and creativity necessary to succeed in the evolving biomedical disciplines.” Here is a link to UT Health’s PREP program: https://uthscsa.edu/biomedical-sciences/programs/prep

  5. A profoundly moving story. Roma, how can you be so cold? Yep, pretty deep friendship. Beginning of a deep relationship. Still the first meeting: You know, deep stuff. Continuing, we see that this isn't just a routine visit with a car salesman. I got sorta choked up here. So much must transpire after this first meeting. Fishing trips. Bowling. Long nights musing and laughing. I read on. Our scribe friend writes on: Text messages! For years! We're talking real bonding. They live two hours apart, an insurmountable distance for personal contact! Still, people can have very meaningful contact via the written word. Olin is a writer, after all. Let's see how it goes: And you never intitiated these text exchanges, Olin. You're busy in College Station. He's busy in Hutto. Busy. Tragic news is to come. Olin's deep friendship with Chad is evident in how Olin learns the sad truth. Doesn't get much more involved and personal than that with a "life long friend." Of course, Olin mustered the same gumption that got him to Schlossnagel's t.u. press conference to drive the two hours to his dear friend's bedside. The note about the dominos game with his wife is a nice pitch-perfect non-trivialization of receiving the dire news. A guy I don't know messaged me that a car salesman I met six years ago and hadn't seen since had died a day and a half before. You were clearly as dear to Chad as he was to you, Olin. Surely, Olin now goes to see Chad in his final repose. Welll, maybe not: Still, Olin has all those fond memories of the truck salesman in whose presence he was only in once. We'll always have Paris, Chad.

  10. I don't think that's true at all. Clinton raised taxes, and he was reelected comfortably in 1996. The key is that Clinton only raised taxes on the highest brackets. So the vast majority of Americans saw no tax increase at all. Combined with a growing economy, the increased revenue from those taxes allowed the federal government to run a budget surplus during the late 1990s. And we can talk about the Election of 2000. Let it suffice it to say that Gore won the popular vote. It was hardly an electoral repudiation of Clinton's fiscal policy. The reality is that if you confine tax increases to the top brackets, you can definitely ride a budget-saving fiscal policy to electoral victory. The real problem for Democrats in the 21st Century has been that every time they take over the White House, they do so in the middle of an economic catastrophe that greatly restricts what fiscal policies they can enact. It's really hard to raise taxes on anyone when you're just trying to recover from Republican-caused economic meltdowns.

  11. The hookem2010 family feud is about to enter its next stage. After not talking for the last couple months, my parents are back in town and ready to get together to see if/how we can salvage our relationship. I can't say that I'm particularly looking forward to spending a weekend evening attempting to get them to recognize reality versus whatever world they believe they're living in, but whatever. Meanwhile, my sister, who is married to a man but considers herself LGBT+, and is a small business owner getting screwed by tariffs, also told my mother that she needed some space. This was followed by an apparently accidental audio message sent to her by my mom of her breaking down to my dad about their children not wanting to talk to them. So now my sister is going to have a big sit-down talk with them a week before me. Little Bro definitely had the right idea by peacing out to Cali almost a decade ago. Tearing your family apart to own the libs!

  12. Part of the reason the bond markets started freaking out yesterday is that everyone finally woke up and realized that everything they thought still existed to constrain Trump's worst impulses (regarding international trade) has failed. Congress refuses to assert its power, the courts are too slow to get in his way, and until his 180 yesterday it sure as hell looked like nobody in the business world had the ability to change his mind. American treasury bonds have been perceived as the safest investment in the world for a hundred years because everyone believed they were backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. Even through the S&L crisis, the dotcom bubble burst, the great recession, and the covid recession the world still thought that our debt was far and away the safest, because it was backed by the strongest economy on earth, protected by the largest military on earth, and guaranteed by a state composed of institutions that fully understood how important and how powerful the full faith and credit of the United States of America is. Even after we elected Trump once, enough guardrails held that the world still generally believed that. Now everyone realizes what a huge fucking mistake that was and our credit has been substantially diminished (at the very least) forever.

  15. It's never going to change. Democrats have been the party of far more responsible spending for 50 years. Doesn't make a shit, morons still call republican "conservatives". Democrats had full control of the 3 branches once from 2008 to 2010 and got the ACA and recovery from the recession out of it. In only 2 years. Doesn't matter, idiots vote Republicans in again and again after that. Americans are brainwashed morons who can't critically analyze anything. There's no incentive to do anything to help them.

  18. The Democrats have plans. Things like funding the IRS correctly and enforcing the laws. Sometimes, like the early 1990s they even raise taxes. They just don't get to finish implementing them before the Republicans get elected again and drive us all off a cliff again.

  19. What a worthless, self-serving piece of writing. "Chad was an ineffective car salesman who thought me and Billy were cool dudes in a sad hanger-on kind of way. Anyway he died." The dominos thing is the most tangible proof yet Olin did really marry a Latina, though.

  20. Some research universities have not eliminated or hidden their DEI departments and policies; out of curiosity I looked at my alma mater (UW) and they still have all their info up, including "Inclusive Name Tools" and "Transgender Resources" among others. I'm sorry UT has approached it in the way they have by informing her they won't even consider her, including telling her that an interview at any research university will be sabotaged by the notation. For now, that's probably not completely accurate. (Tomorrow, who the hell knows?) I feel terrible for her and others in her position, excitedly starting careers, who have this disgusting shit sandwich served to them by their own country. Rage. Yeah, despite what I said above, ask not for whom the bell tolls; it also tolls for all of us eventually. Today visas were revoked for 9 students at the UW, 3 at Seattle U, and 2 at Gonzaga. None of the institutions have any idea why, nor were they or anyone else notified. SOP. At least the UW is providing legal and counseling services to the 9.

  22. It is interesting that progressives, for the most part, stick with Democrats, because Democrats are the Conservative Party. Anyone who believes differently is deluded, and /or repulsed by the marginal influence progressives have in the Democratic Party. As a left of center voter, who often feels the Dems have shifted too far right, I may not immediately agree with the cutting edge of progressivism, but, truth be told, I usually come to see the value in the ideas they bring to the table. Still, I believe the debt needs to be brought to heel, that the rule of law must be honored, that legal precedents are the building blocks of our future, and that, while the USA needs a strong national defense, we have that, many times over. Folks who want to gut the social safety net are raging radical psychopaths. And folks who follow turnip are fascist traitors to the Constitution, and they are the immediate threat. Yes, there will be blood. Radical psychopathy seeks blood. We bear witness to the blood they are willing to shed right now. Do you think allowing starvation and unchecked disease is bloodless? Tax the obscenely wealthy, for the sake of our future, and this country’s stated values. Tax them exorbitantly, and tax their wealth, not just their income. Because that is the conservative thing to do. Get a fucking handle on defense spending. The debt will be brought under control.

  25. Quoted for truth. Deficits are "unsustainable" for people/entities with finite live spans and a defined income time period. When an entity has a presumably endless payback time period, the benefit of inflation, and growing net income every year (not to mention the ability to make money out of thin air), the whole "this is unsustainable and needs to be run as a business!" is bullshit. Is it good to run huge deficits? No its not, but it is not all doom and gloom. And if you actually are interested in reducing the number, maybe vote for the one party that has actually done that in our lifetimes.

  32. Chilifest was this past weekend outside of College Station. It's put on by all of the aggie frats. My daughter has gone a couple of times to visit some of her friends that are aggies. She thankfully didn't attend this year because she over it and says it's dirty, gross and chaotic. I'm more thankful after Sunday when the following story got relayed to us. One of my daughter's friends that attends Baylor went to visit their mutual aggie friend and go to chilifest. Baylor girl brings a friend or two with her. The aggie friend didn't have any interest in chilifest partly because her parents (who are good friends of my wife and I) were in town for a parent weekend with her sorority, but she was going to give the Baylor girls a place to stay. Long story short. The two girls from Baylor's drink all day, go out in Northgate after. Phones die. Get picked up by fake Uber driver and get raped. Its a scary, disturbing and disgusting story but I'm going to leave out the details. The CS police initially blow them off, but luckily the parents of the aggie friend are in town and make shit happen. They end up at the hospital. Get a lot of attitude and suspicion from the nurses after the girls are taken to the back. Won't tell them what is going on with the girls for hours. Turns out they let them sleep it off before administering the rape kit stuff. A friendlier nurse later apologizes for her colleagues and mentions there were two other girls in for the same reason. Yesterday I was talking to our friend who works part time for the Texas DCJ and he told us there were 830 reported "Sexual incidents" from last weekend. Some, no doubt, were duplicate but that is an unbelievable number. He said the Texas Rangers are involved now. Also, another LE friend of his told him today that "a girl or two were gang raped. They have one in ICU and they aren't sure she's going to make it." I really hope this is rumor mill type exageration stuff but even if it's only 10% of what I'm told, it's too much. Great job protecting girls, aggies.

  37. Even though Megan McCain has never displayed a single level of erudition on any topic ever, I find value in her thoughts for having the foresight to be John McCain's daughter. Literally billions of people before her lacked the ability for such instinctive selection. She could've been the daughter of Gene Shalit but she said "No." Even under the scrutiny of hindsight, I think we can all agree that she made a very lucrative decision for herself. You have to respect that. She earned her platform.
