  1. Fuck. Just had a really hard conversation with the boy. Mom had to lay down the law, and forbid him from going to the Poland Ukraine border. I followed with a text telling him I understand what he wants to do, but he needs to stay safe. His reply: “I’m not playing solider, it’s not right to sit on my ass and live a fun cushy care free life in Berlin when there are people just like me a couple hundred miles away who need something to eat or a place to stay. I understand the worry but there are also moms in Ukraine who want their kids out of harms way. I won’t go near the border, but I’ve sent in an application to the Polish government. I added special instructions not to be near the border, but there are potatoes to be peeled, sacks to be unloaded from trucks, tents to be pitched and shit to be done in other places. If I need to go to Warsaw and plunge toilets in a refugee center, I will.” I don’t know how to feel about this.

  2. The Biden admin tasking Rubio to be its mouthpiece to get info out to our Allies and strategic partners is the strangest part of this entire thing. It makes me ponder what the US could be like before politics turned into a cultural war.

  4. :stares at my 2 degrees on my office wall about Russian history and my 3+ years spent there: Not everything is about American diplomacy. This was unavoidable. And it’s going incredibly poorly for Putin - his gambit to retake what he believes is Russian territory is actually what will do him in. It’s standard Russian history, really.

  5. A couple of thoughts. With this war we are seeing a fight between Western Liberal Democracy vs Anti-Democratic Authoritarianism. Certain political factions in the West have been drawn to this style of government for awhile but now the world is seeing what genuine Authoritarianism brings to humanity. It is being exposed at this moment and Western Liberal Democracies are coming together to confront it. Hopefully this is a shift back to Liberalism in the West and the proponents of Nationalism are chased back into the shadows far away from the levers of power. Rubio put on his big boy pants this week and took at seat at the adults table. I am hoping that the Republicans now see the importance of keeping the adults in charge and start sending all of the Know-Nothings back to the children's table or better yet purge them from the halls of power. We are seeing why an alliance of the Western Liberal Democracies are so important. The Nationalist America First Isolationist movement needs to be purged and sent back to the early 20th century.

  6. I was one who definitely underestimated Zelensky coming into this thing. And I’m here to eat some crow. Dude is a fucking gangster. As Brisket said upthread, this was a role this dude came into this world to play.

  7. After a night of heavy drinking, I raise my dram of Macallan Rare Cask and salute President Zelenskyy, the Klitschko brothers, Ghost of Kyiv, the trumpet player, Snake Island 13, Sunflower Lady, and all the other fighting men and women of Ukraine. I pray and hope that your resolve lasts as long as it needs to. Fight back. Defend your homeland. Fuck those commie assholes up! I'm drunk so I'm going to bed.

  8. I remember reading a paper about a group of paleontologist who discovered a 100,000 year old skeleton of an old woman. They were able to determine from her jaw that she hadn't been able to masticate for some significant period in her life. Which meant someone had to chew her food for her and feed it to her. The paper went on to discuss that one of the biggest mutations which differentiated bipedal humans from other species was the ability to care for one another. For other species, the injury to a leg meant death, either as a predator who could no longer catch prey, or as prey who could no longer run from predators. But for humans, there was fossil evidence of prehistoric man helping the injured to live past their injury. That's what I think about when I see this tweet. We are a complicated, combustible mix of traits. Seeing stuff like this makes me swell with pride to be a fellow human.

  9. My first post this morning was a joke about when does the Ukrainian invasion of Russia begin? Well, maybe it's not a joke. LOL, Ukrainians sticking it to them - in RUSSIA:

  10. Marco is doing a great job as mouthpiece for our intelligence services. I wonder if him being the guy also has some reasoning based on things here at home, though. There’s a significant portion of the country that would immediately discount anything coming from within this administration. That would be true if the other guy had won in 2020, too. Rubio seems to be a messenger reasonably palatable to all of us here in the US.

  11. I do not want to turn this into something else, but having a prominent Republican tweeting out messages that are blatantly pro Ukrainian, at a time when other Republicans are feeling like they're making a tough choice between supporting Ukraine and staying on good terms with Trump and his followers, is an excellent strategy for anyone who is pro-Ukraine. Again, don't want this to devolve into any kind of anti-Trump discussion. Full disclosure, I've considered myself a lifetime Republican, regardless of conflicting feelings about that status. I'm not a fan of Mario Rubin, but none of that matters. I'm glad he's a source for these tweets, because right now I don't consider myself Republican/Democrat as much as I consider myself pro Ukrainian. I hope there's a way to at least get a significant part of that $6.4 billion military aid package for Ukraine passed. I haven't read anything about that lately.

  17. This was going to happen short of Ukraine voluntarily becoming a Russian republic. We basically took away any cover of legitimacy Putin could have claimed by playing it the way we did. It was brilliant really. And really left the Putin dicksuckers in the US twisting in the wind

  18. Drinking and took a gummy early. Watching war pr0n of burning Russian men and material. Reading of the international response against Russia with a big, shit-eating grin. After some years of growing darkness in the world, it’s damn nice to see good people uniting to say firmly “No. Enough is enough.” Here’s to the Ukraine, it’s people’s heroic resolve, and their righteous fight for their country. I hope they can hold out forever and be a napalm tar baby stuck firmly to Putin’s cock. Fuck all current and future despots! You have no place in this world.

  29. Marco Rubio has acquitted himself very well throughout all of this. I've also been critical of him but his genuine disdain, free from any petty impulse of cheap political advancement, of a flagrantly authoritarian power grab will buy him well due credit from me. Rationality is a refreshing change of pace and deserves platitude on a case by case basis from every political aisle.
