Texas Recruiting Notes 2020

If Ty Jordan does not pan out as RB2, Texas should let the high school season play out and keep an eye on a kid named Montavien Hunt.Ā  He plays in district 9-4A and had 1,514 yards and 20 TD' last years.Ā  He is very fast, but a little undersized at 5"11 185.Ā  Has not been on the camp circuit and was hurt during his team's playoff run last season.Ā  His junior Hudl looks like Derrian Brown 2.0.Ā  His team, Jasper should make a deep run in 4A division II playoffs this season. Ā

That name is a take.Ā  Every day.Ā

I hope he's from Trevailance Hunt's family because that's a great name, too.

You guys really love predictions and percentages. I don't really love doing them since things can change so quickly on both sides of the recruitment, but I'll do my best.

Broughton - Texas

Collins - Texas

Umanmielen - Texas A&M

Evans - No clue

Bijan Robinson - Ohio State

McClellan - Oklahoma

Wilson - Too close to say. I'm leaning towards Oregon right now but I think Texas is making it really tough for him

Johnston - Texas

Ransom - Ohio State

Lindberg - Texas

Karic - Depends on what happens with Lindberg

Rogers - Texas

Jerrin Thompson - ask me again in the fall

Ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā  Whatā€™s the latest on Broughton? You think we still have a chance?

Yes, I do. I've said a few times I think it's very close, but Texas has always held a bit of an edge in this recruitment. If his family has a big say, I think Texas wins out.

Ā Ā Ā  if jqj did not play qb where would u put him on the field?

I think a lot of people lean to safety or linebacker, but I really like him with the ball in his hands. Could be at running back or in an h-back role.

Ā Ā Ā  Where does Texas stand with Ethan Pouncey?

He's a guy they will move more aggressively on depending on what happens to their other targets. I'd expect him to be in for a fall official.

Ā Ā Ā  Mike, I saw you wrote that you would let us in on the Bijan scoop after he commits (probably to OSU.) Why the wait? Would the info influence Texas' chance with him or were you asked to keep silent?

I always wait until a recruit makes his decision in a situation like that. It's more to explain in detail everything I heard, and so much could change between now and the decision.

Ā Ā Ā  Besides Thompson, what other safety target will we be after? I mean after Ransom picks OSU

Xavion Alford. Also keep an eye on Jerrin Thompson from Lufkin as a guy who could possibly be up next.

Ā Ā Ā  Any insight why the horns were not interested in the oh st wr from rockwall?

I think a lot of people questioned his high end athletic ceiling. I think he tested better than most people expected and he's been tremendously productive.

Ā Ā Ā  So do you think he wants somewhere else then and his family wants Texas? Curious what you think he wants if his family wasn't involved?

I think he's personally deciding between Texas, Ohio State, and Texas A&M.

Ā Ā Ā  1. Over/under: UT gets 2.5 more commits by the end of July 2. Texas has 2021 QB committed by the start of the season. Buy or sale? 3. Does Chad Lindberg or Chris Thompson have a commitment date set?

1) If you gave me until end of August I'd take the over 2) That's an interesting one. It may not be exactly by the start of the season, but I'd buy having one by mid-September 3) Neither have anything set in stone.

Ā Ā Ā  Do we lead for Rogers? When do you think heā€™ll commit?

I think Texas still holds the edge but Florida is close behind. It will be before the season.

Ā Ā Ā  Do we land a Top 20 nationally RB when itā€™s all said and done?

I think so

Ā Ā Ā  Hey Mike any word on when Lindberg commits? Also, where does TX turn to for RB of they whiff on Evans and Robinson which is highly likely.

Lindberg will be before the season sometime. They have some backup options like Dominic Richardson and Ty Jordan

Ā Ā Ā  If mike roach could have j rogers or eaton for the tx system which do u take? If u cannot answer totally understand

I'd take Rogers. Eaton is a high ceiling athlete who could potentially develop into a monster player, but I like what Rogers brings to the field and his athletic ceiling is pretty high as well.

Ā Ā Ā  You're the head coach with an unlimited budget. What things need to happen to land a highly ranked (i.e. 5 star) RB? What, if anything, can CDC do to help?

I'm not sure money or an athletic director can change anything in that area. More money would go to things like facilities but those are going to be updated after the south end zone is finished. The only thing you could fix with money is hiring new assistants that you think could possibly recruit more effectively.

Ā Ā Ā  Whoā€™s the next RB targets? I know they wonā€™t stop with the big 3 but whoā€™s other names we need to know?

Right now, Dominic Richardson and Ty Jordan. I could also see Tahj Brooks from Manor becoming an option.

Ā Ā Ā  Is there a player in tx you think the industry is missing on in a big way?

Parker Washington, but I expect that to change soon. He lit up The Opening Finals. Devin Price is another one.

Ā Ā Ā  Mike, I know there were two silent commits sitting out there, were those filled by Dorbah and McRee?

Yes, Dorbah was the silent from Heat Wave and McRee was the silent sent out the other night.

The info is all over theĀ place. I basically gave up on the idea based on what was coming out of Rivals but it sounds like we are getting mixed signals now.Ā

Hey, at least Roach isn't hedging for once.

Of course, he basically admits the sentence before that he doesn't seem to have current info on Broughton's preference, either.

In the recruiting chat he says that if Broughton's family has a big say, Texas will win out. So it looks like that's what his prediction is banking on.

Best part is the question about paying players and Roachā€™s whistling past the graveyard ā€œwhat else can we do for facilities.ā€ Willfully playing ignorant or dumb is an interesting choice, cotton.

Horns 247 has always skirted waaaay around that. Versus TFB, which is very open about it (witness the connect the dots puzzle they wrote after the Dylan Wright commitment).

He does. Ā He was at Coldspring earlier. Ā I think maybe under a different Barbay. Ā I could be wrong on that. Ā

My brother in law is a damn good coach also. Ā

They had a good run last year. Ā Injuries decimated them. Ā Multiple Running backs and d linemen hurt. Ā Killed them. Ā

Based on all the info our there, there are just two things that are relatively certain in the Broughton recruitment:

1.) Mom likes Texas.Ā

2.) $9.95 crowd knows jack shit.

Who knows how it will shake out, but the doom and gloom may have come too early. With family being such a big part of his recruitment it is hard to believe Texas is out of it with mom thinking UT is best for him.Ā Of course, I think you still take the field over Texas.Ā

I had an in on Broughton for a second back when the skies on that one were bluer, but random Surly poster confirming 9.95s wasn'tĀ my thing.

You, on the other hand, have a more legit case, so fill us in already.Ā

Clint Buckley: Texas target Princely Umanmielen talks The Opening experience

Injuries took Manor four-star 2020 defensive end and major Texas target Princely Umanmielen out of most of the one-on-one competition at The Opening finals last week in Frisco. But Horns247 caught up with him during the event, and discussed his expectations and more. Umanmielen was one of just two players from the Austin area who qualified for the finals, joining Lake Travis quarterback and Longhorns commit Hudson Card. ā€œIt feels good because Iā€™m the second player out of Manor to do it, Erick Fowler did it a couple of years ago,ā€ he said. ā€œI used to watch him in eighth grade, and I just always wanted to be here so it feels real good and itā€™s awesome because I can represent Austin and come here.ā€

The standout pass-rusher said the competitive atmosphere is what stands out the most at The Opening. ā€œMostly the experience and the competition, and Iā€™m really excited just to get coached by the people whoā€™ve done it at the highest level,ā€ Umanmielen said. ā€œAnd the competition going against the best O-linemen in the nation, just getting a taste of how itā€™s gonna be in college.ā€ Umanmielen said he will be paying close attention to the schools recruiting him the hardest this football season. ā€œBuilding a relationship and the way their defense plays this season,ā€ he said regarding determining factors in his decision, which is set for Oct. 15. ā€œIā€™m trying to play in a four-man down. Some of the schools Iā€™m getting recruited by play three-man and four-man, and thatā€™s cool. But Iā€™d prefer a four-man.ā€

At 6-foot-4, 256 pounds, Umanmielen is ranked as the No. 11 strong-side defensive end in the nation, and the No. 32 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports.

To be fair he's saying he hears that their one of VB's finalists but he doesn't think he'll actually choose them
