Sucks we couldn’t get him in there earlier to fast track his development.

If only we had three cupcake games early in the season to get him acclimated

That's my thinking. We showed improvement, and that's damn sure appreciated, but let's not get caught up in, "wow, the OL's fixed; we're gonna fuck shit up!" that seems to be going around with some folks.

It went from epically abysmal to good enough against what plenty of people claim is one of the best DL in the country.

he subbed in for Stroh in game 5 and then started game 6 of his true freshman season.  that's the definition of getting him in early to fast track his development.

If him to guard was the move since Neto wasn’t this shit should have been done during Sam Houston state and into the bye week and starting vs Florida. Getting thrown in at a position you haven’t practiced out of a bye week was terrible coaching. Stroh had been bad and needed replacing since game 2

Don’t forget the bye

This line could be good if we found a Hutson replacement.

The Hutson part is the truth.  With him at center they will get eaten alive by mediocre defenses and destroyed by the Georgia’s of the world.  Even Kentucky and Miss St. could give us problems by blowing up the middle of the line.

Georgia DL not that great this year truthfully

While there's a LOT of room for improvement, I feel like something *clicked* with the line yesterday. Improvement is rarely a straight line or smooth curve; a lot of times it's like a stair-stepping function, where you bust your ass for a long time and see no improvement, then one day it just *works* and you're over the wall... until you get to the next wall.

I don't know if OL play follows that, but it sure looked like we got over a big hump on Saturday. And while OU's DL might not be the best one we face all year -- we have some really good defenses on our schedule, they were statistically the best through 5 games, which means they don't suck.

I’m think those games did more harm than good, as evidenced by our appearing to be unprepared for Florida’s size, strength and athleticism…which we appeared to be prepared for against OU

The first watch didn't grade that well. Wisner put in an extraordinary effort to get to 4 ypc despite several runs just blown up by the OU DL, frequently turning nothing into something; even on the long run, Goosby ran in, clogged a cutback lane, and almost decked him. Arch was under plenty of pressure. They eliminated the opening script with penalties.

I do give them credit for coming out and competing against a top tier defensive front - pointing out their miscues is fair but they were also just outmanned. The unit that showed up at Florida would have imploded after that. They battled though, and at least on a few occaisions generated some push in the run game and gave Arch time to make a play. They lost the battle at the LOS in aggergate but accomplished just enough for Texas to find a little something on offense.

Hopefully it's a confidence builder as they go into a few games where the quality of opposing DL's will take a step back.

The frustrating thing is that, from what I've seen, we have at least one decent power 5 center on the roster in Connor Robertson.

I'll leave technical analysis to more qualified people, but it was nice that these guys stopped getting stupid penalties after the opening drive. You can work around a leakly O-line if it's not 1st and 15 all the time. If all they did this game was clean that up, that is a massive improvement.

Yeah there was one short Wisner run on a 3rd and 1 early in the third quarter  where he got hit and went down after a 2 yard gain but got the first down. Fowler (I think it was him) said there wasn't much push from the OL on the play and I thought to myself "3rd and 1 we moved the LOS 2 yards and past the line to gain. That was tremendous push for our OL this season."

As many here have been saying we are just looking for competent play from this unit because that would be a big improvement. And that is what we got on Saturday.

I think I remember the one. I don't even know if Wisner was hit or if he slipped while trying to make a cut. He ended up getting just enough by falling forward but I remember a notable interior surge, the likes of which we had not seen in short yardage all season to that point. Wisner falling forward to get the first was only possible because the OU DL was moved, it would have been a stuff in a stalemate. I maintain most of our run game was Wisner hero ball but that particular play was the OL, and it was an important one.

OU DL is very good, but they dont really anchor well. They are movement-based DL. All those line games make them vulnerable to zone concepts. The crazy thing i noticed in this game is how many times Brooks is 20+ yards down field. That guy can fucking move given how big he is. Funny to see a 6'7" 350 chasing the RB just busting his ass trying to find more work.

I appreciate seeing the improvement, but it’s important to remember that’s what we SHOULD be seeing in game 6 in an area in which unit play is built on experience and continuity.

I still think there’s a need to upgrade talent, coaching, and possibly offensive system.

Aggie just managed to grind out 34 points, 4.4 yards a carry, zero sacks, zero TFL against the same front that destroyed our line to the tune of 6 sacks and 7 TFL’s.

It looked like slight hesitation for reading the hole. I jokingly said to my buddy I was watching the game with that Wisner was initially shocked to see the online get movement on a third and short.

I also saw several plays where linemen went downfield and hit people during runs.  Haven't noticed that before.

After rewatching I came away really impressed with Brooks, considering it was his first start.  The difference between he and Stroh is night and day.  Brooks keeps his feet moving and even when he loses at initial contact he is able to fight back to at least a draw.  When he wins a rep he is able to latch on to the defender and not allow them to slide off because he doesn't lunge.  Its the difference between a true athlete and just a 'large human'.

The combo of Goosby and Brooks on the left side will prove to be an effective pairing as the year goes on imo.  They are well suited for outside zone because they have plus athleticism.  That is what was so odd about trotting Stroh out there, not only is he bad individually, he really doesn't pair well with Goosby or the rest of the line.

I'll take a leaky pass pro over the repeated jailbreak we saw against Florida.

The OL played well enough to allow our offense to score 16 points against a good defense. Which is basically about where we were the second half of last season. Which is... ok? It's a big improvement but we're not winning any championships of any kind like this.

Brooks is already a monster upgrade over Stroh, which makes me wonder what our coaches were watching not only the entire first half of the season but also in practice every day going back to July. Now we need a similar upgrade over Hutson in order to go from "competent" to "good".

Yeah Filmguy complimented Hutson and Brooks for "hunting blocks" downfield...

This is exactly the play that I come back to as sign of improvement. From our vantage point in the stadium, we were sure it was yet another short yardage failure as Wisner tripped and fell into the back of the O lineman.

Was shocked to see that our line had already pushed OU 3 yards back. That hasn’t happened at all this season before the third quarter.

Yeah, the line didn't necessarily win at the point of attack. But Wisener made some guys miss, and then EFFORT like that by the line got subsequent blocks even after initial blocking failure to spring explosive runs. The line isn't good. But so long as it gives good effort, we can still make things work.

Or hunting at end of play. Watch DJ Campbell here:

Here's another fun rep. Love seeing this from Hutson/Campbell.
