Kiffin at Florida would have been a huge problem. Does LSU have the money to play in the big leagues on a sustained basis? Although I was pretty surprised Ole Miss seemed to have the funds.

Kiffin and Ole Miss couldn't keep Quinshon Judkins on their roster, where Ohio State seemed to be the highest bidder during the '23 transfer portal cycle.

Not just going to a rival, their biggest rival. And doing it in the middle of their best season ever. Ole Miss has their own version of battered Aggie syndrome and enough scars as a fan base already. This is going to leave a mark.

With regard to Baton Rouge, it is a gigantic shit hole but the campus is nice. Oxford is like fucking Mayberry if it got invaded by a bunch of country club cokeheads. And it’s fucking impossible to get to. BR at least has a fucking airport.

But being from Louisiana still has some sway with recruits even in this NIL era and it’s a hotbed for talent compared to Mississippi. Plus Death Valley is a home field advantage that Ole Miss could only dream about. And two of the biggest dumbasses to ever blow a whistle won national titles there. LSU, like it or not, has a much higher ceiling and infinitely better pedigree than Ole Miss could ever have.

This business about poaching players and staff? Fuck him. Call his bluff. Promote the next HC from within. If he has the balls to go into that locker room and try to tear apart that team that has a legitimate shot in the playoffs those kids are going to look at him like he’s lost his mind. They’ve been busting their ass all year trying to get to this point with one goal and now they’re going to just bail at the most critical time? Good luck with that. They aren’t going to jump on board. They are going to revolt.

Also biggest loser in all of this: Marty Smith sitting in Oxford with his thumb up his ass for two days just wait for some kind of announcement.

Charlie Weis, Jr. ?

Yeah the Marty Smith memes are hilarious right now. https://ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2025/11/29/lane-kiffin-news-fans-jokes-marty-smith-stuck-ole-miss/87532872007/

“Poor Smith was just stuck at Ole Miss, sharing whatever he had to share with viewers across the country.

While we're sure Smith was ready to get back to his hotel room and get a well-earned night of sleep, college football fans couldn't help but joke a bit about the ESPN reporter being effectively trapped with no news to report.”

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I think it's really shitty that coaches can leave and be hired while the season is still in progress. Ole Miss will almost certainly have a playoff spot, but will not be near 100% without Kiffin, and with the way the portal works, his players will be distracted by recruiting and figuring out where to go next year instead of the game ahead. It's also extremely unfair to the players and fans that outside forces derail a great season.

It's not the school's fault, because this is how the business is, but it would be nice if the NCAA put in a hiring moratorium for all schools until 2 days after the championship game is played. A freeze on recruiting too, and spare the portal transfers and announcements until then as well. The NFL has a similar deal where teams still active in the playoffs cannot have staff poached until they lose in order to maintain continuity and focus on quality games.

But this is a really low-character display driven by vanity and self-centeredness. He’s taken all the joy out of a generational season for Ole Miss. He’s blown up his own career-defining accomplishment (to this point) and a chance at a championship now for the lure of something bigger around the corner.  And he is fantastically, generationally wealthy. I'm seeing this everywhere and... who cares? This isn't just an interchangeable salesman. This is a coach that built that program and that program is only in that position because of that particular coach.

If you're Ole Miss admin/boosters and your team is about to go into the playoffs and Kiffin is offering to stay through the playoffs, you have options you can take regardless of what other industries might be doing hypothetically in other circumstances. You COULD get him to stay along with his staff and get as much as you can out of them for winning right now. Hurt feelings, rivalry, blah blah sure, but that is an actual route to take and if pride is the main driver or ONLY driver in telling Kiffin to fuck off immediately then that's awful management.

Kiffin is a POS. That’s my hill I’m dying on. He’s a low character asshole. If that’s people’s thing more power to them. Ole Miss should have realized he wasn’t staying 3 weeks ago but some felt even on Friday when he STILL wouldn’t say where he was headed after the egg bowl that he was not coming back. Seems there were quite a few in power at ole Miss that thought Lane was just being Lane and showing out for attention and would be back I guess. As far as him being the HC of the playoffs: I would have already had his replacement lined up. Sure there is pride involved but he pissed all over Ole Miss and wants his cake and to eat it too. I root for his sobriety but he’s a POS as a person. And if Karma comes along it’s well earned. He’s learned nothing since 2013 and getting left on the tarmac. Karma is a bitch.

If the rumors of the demand are true (let me coach in the playoffs or I take everyone else on the staff with me), I think that likely rises to meet at least the catch-all included in most definitions of "cause" in termination clauses.

How else is it supposed to work? He's going to go to LSU now and just sit around to wait hiring staff until Ole Miss is done with their season? If he's getting pushed to leave NOW then he needs to start his new job NOW, which means hiring and recruiting... NOW.

How is losing your head coach any different, if not more significant, than losing your starting QB?

The only positive in this is that Lane will troll the aggies every season since they're permanent rivals. After the way he departed Tennessee, none if this is surprising.

One curious thing about addiction.  The mindset that seems to accompany substance abuse is one of something I call "inward-dwellingness," a peculiar form of selfishness or self-centeredness.

It doesn't always or even usually manifest itself in vanity or attention-seeking (but it surely can). Oftentimes, it's something of the opposite, a crippling insecurity and feeling that everything negative is somehow your fault (but also realizing that insecurity can manifest itself in self-aggrandizement).

A sizable part of recovery from addiction is "right-sizing" one's ego and recognizing that it's not all about you, neither the good nor the bad.

I've seen some stuff where Kiffin makes the right noises about recovery.  But this kind of stuff makes me wonder if he's headed for a big crash.

We're all subject to being bullshat by these guys, but Sark seems to live his recovery to a greater extent than Kiffin.

They will. They absolutely will. Grade A clusterfuck. But they will get in the expanded CFP over a 3 loss Texas. We are out bc our clusterfuck of a HC couldn’t get our team ready for a shit Florida team after a bye week. That’s on sark. 3 losses shouldn’t get you in unless the teams ahead of you also have 3. Then we get in. And damned if every fucking team we needed to lose didn’t win yesterday. I mean damn.

I'm not arguing that the best thing for the new LSU coach would be to get his staff hired ASAP.

What I'm saying is that he's currently employed at Ole Miss. And while employed there, he has (allegedly) made a threat, now public, that he'll poach staff members unless he gets what he wants. That could be grounds for termination for cause. He probably doesn't care about that, because he thinks Ole Miss has no chance in the playoff without him and LSU is about to pay him mega millions.

But it's certainly an interesting contrast to the Kelly saga.

Horseshit. Snubbing the players who've worked their ass off to get to the best season in Ole Miss history is BS. Ole Miss is 100% in the playoffs either way, so doesn't matter, but just a dumbass idea.

I'd call it extortion.  You do this or I'll do that.  Lane has definitely shit the bed in Oxford.  In my book, you're either in or out.  If you want to leave, then here's your box, fill it and turn in your keys.  It sucks for Ole Miss, but would they really want him to stay?  IMO, he can't be trusted.  Time of Ole Miss to find a new coach.  All this might make a good 30 for 30 episode.

How is, "If you make me leave I'm going to start hiring staff immediately which means either taking guys with me or hiring guys in place of those who decided to stay on for the playoffs, meaning they won't work for me and you won't keep them either" a "threat"?

"Threat" is PR language put out there by Ole Miss and people are just gobbling it up because it sounds sensational.

Let's say Ole Miss let him coach in the playoffs even if he stated he was leaving for LSU.  The second Ole Miss loses the entire narrative would be that Kiffin wasn't really focused on the playoffs and was worrying about his new LSU job.  If I'm Ole Miss, I can't have that.  Time to cut bait and really the Ole Miss AD should be on TV right now saying, "we have fired Lane Kiffin and Joe the assistant coach is our new HC.  Hope he chokes to death on a Po Boy in Baton Rouge".

Proven winner and problem child loser in the same hat. I get your broader point but think there are better examples. Day would be my first. The OSU fans truly wanted to fire his ass after losing to Michigan last year. That has to stick in his craw. I think a pay improvement at Texas could potentially get him to leave. (I'm using him as a hypothetical here folks) That said, imo, the pressures at Texas are no less dramatic and guard rail to guard rail. So, let's say hypothetical he comes. If the fan nuttiness drove him from OSU what on earth would lean someone to believe Texas wouldn't do the same.

I can devil's advocate with the best of them. 😘

I'm actually not sure if they would owe a buyout, I haven't seen the Kiffin contract. But I was mainly chuckling at the irony of LSU briefly trying to argue Kelly was fired for cause and then turning around and hiring someone who might have just created cause for himself at Ole Miss.

Conferences and the league need to solve this on the other end: schools have to dance with who brung them till a season ends for that team. Want to give up on a season? Ok, that’s what happens. Fire a coach mid-season for anything but criminality or gross misconduct and:

- Remaining games forfeited/not played

- TV revenue redistributed to other conference mates, pro-rated. The firing school must make-up lost revenue for opponents’ road games and refund the price of all tickets equivalent to a sell-out game. Any lost TV revenue will be made up by the school.

- Players get a year of eligibility and Čína either transfer or force the new regime to honor their roster spot the next year.

That will reset the cycle to sanity quickly.

I feel sorry for the players. They earned the record and worked their asses off for 11-1. So I do feel bad for them. The university should have figured out that he wasn’t coming back when he didn’t re-up pretty quick like 6 sought after coaches already did with their current schools.

The problem is the coaches as a collective want this early signing period, this portal window, etc etc. The group at large doesn't care about the specific impacts on any one school or the sport.  They want to generally get recruiting (both HS and the transfer portal) over as quickly as possible going into the New Year.  And since most coaches are not playing in a playoff game and the NCAA is a soft cock organization I don't see it changing.
