Things not going well for Joe Rogan

Recommended Posts

Lived next door to a pirate radio station he was involved in back in the late 90s -- at Merrie Lynn off Manor Road. He was getting real weird around then but 911 sent him over, from my perspective. I never personally conversed with him but was with the same crowd a lot. I was pretty pissed off about his "truther" 911 shit and was going to message him, but my friend in close contact with him said....no, NO don't do that...he'll never leave you alone, he'll harass you etc. Seems consistent.

The only time I've ever listened to him was basically under duress.  I had an old friend and his lunatic wife who were basically begging me to watch the youtube clip of his podcast with Brett Weinstein.  This was summer 2020, and Rogan's topic was CRT.  She was somehow an early opponent of CRT, though the CRT she was railing against was far different than the definition of CRT now.

Anyways, I finally gave in and watched a little bit of it, then had a nasty spat with them when I said, "So we have a guy who flunked out of college discussing how CRT is overtaking American colleges with a professor from Evergreen State University, which is literally the biggest fucking joke in higher education, and I'm supposed to learn something about my profession from this?"

This was also my first data point in the theory that Trumpanzees are completely unable to discern credible, knowledgeable sources from pure unadulterated bullshit that appeals to them.  And I told them that, and I don't think we've spoken since.  And I don't miss them.  Also, she nearly died of covid last fall because she's not vaxed.

He flunked out of college? Thought he taught TKD at UMass & never finished.

Assuming this scandal(s) ultimately die down, Rogan will go more and more to the extreme on any topic. Podcast guests who represent the consensus of their profession will avoid him.

I still give it a 10% chance that Rogan is just told by Spotify to take a very long vacation on their dime. The key being that he can’t formally or informally recreate his show until the contract end date is met.

I voted for neither of those two, but went with a protest vote of Johnson instead. There are quite a few of us on this board that did that and now regret our choice after 2017-2020.

Protest votes are dumb as hell. One was qualified and the other was a walking disaster, with an incestual fetish towards his own daughter. Johnson was a doofus who couldn’t be bothered to learn even basic geopolitical knowledge.

Ah well, lesson learned I hope.

So you didn't vote for Trump and didn't vote for Hillary.  Are you interested in politics?

What bearing is personal politics supposed to have on this topic?  Or, would my answer have changed your interpretation of what I already wrote?

JR is a guy who has a show where he talks to many people about many different stuff.  Listening is on a voluntary basis.  He's not anyone's doctor.  He doesn't tell people what to do.  He can't un-vaccinate you.  He can't breathe through your masks.  He's not your financial advisor (LOL at criticizing him for not understanding rev vs margin).

If you listen to him on how to run your portfolio, on how to roundhouse kick, on how to medicate yourself, you have that right and everything that comes with it.

All this 50 pages is self-evident rabid mob building strawman and running roughshod over it.

Dude.  We live in a country where school boards won't let kids read a fucking comic book about the holocaust....which in the book, happens to fucking MICE.

And, again, for the billionth time, the difference between THAT (government action) and the discussion happening here (private calls to action and economic pressure) are two different things.

A fuckstick disseminates misinformation that has actually led people to make fatal decisions.  That fuckstick is dumber than a bag of hammers, and has demonstrated that he has zero interest in a fact or evidence-based conversation about pretty much anything.  And he has 11 million devotees who gobble up whatever bullshit he serves them.  Yes, as a society, we can and should have a problem with that, and should call for the more responsible parties (like Spotify) to get right with shit.  That's how a functioning society works.  In fact, a society that FAILS to respond to such a malfunction is a broken one.  What would be fucked up is if we had the Rogan shit going on and the only reaction was "that's totally cool, good for him, good for his audience."

Sometimes the lesser of two evils is absolutely necessary, and it was obvious at the time, even if you considered Hilary some sort of devil. What an asinine and ultimately democracy killing “protest.”

Who was the surly poster who shared a screenshot on some ordinary topic and had a search tab open with pegging porn ? I was lucky enough to have seen it in real time-- that was peak surly, one of the funniest things I've ever seen on this site.

Gwyneth Paltrow sells vagina juice.  Matt Damon is on TV promoting magic internet money.  Drug companies advertise on every medium imaginable.  And if this whataboutism, then whatabout the comic book with mice that relates to JR is as much non sequitur ?

The distinction about gov and private censorship is not the issue here.

You have an enraged mob trying to cancel JR on every avenue through every which angle - on grounds of... your caring about his 11 million devotees? Bro, they can't cough through your nana's mask.

That is true to a degree.  Our system is flawed as hell.  But voting is a responsibility of each person, not just a right.   Find people who are willing to make that change or atleast push for it.   Support them.

How is this still a story?

Rogan's entire schtick attracts listeners and also pushes some away. As long as the former > latter, Spotify will keep paying him.  Once/if it becomes untenable, they'll let him go.

There are no deep conversations necessary about freedom of speech or whatever, it's just fucking capitalism.

Also, if you are worried that the words that come out of your may mouth may one day be used against you, then don't record yourself talking for multiple hours every goddamn day for years.

No one is cancelling Joe Rogan.  That is between Spotify.

What is the opposite of cancelling? Promoting? Streisand effect? Because I read today that Thiel-backed start up is offering Rogan $100mm for JRE if for some reason Spotify wanted to get out of the JRE business.

Sounds like the "consequences" of being a very popular content creator, aside from the hundreds of millions of dollars and the being un-cancellable unless there is a dead body involved (also looking at you Chapelle), is options.

Lol, I'm sure that's exactly what Rogan wanted injected into all of this right now.

To me, it's clear that (along with Spotify/Elk having a talking to him) Joe Rogan wanted to tamp this all down last week with his apology as he is smart enough to recognize that sometimes these small fires can turn into conflagrations that get out of control and burn up everything. I don't think he wants Trump piggybacking off his twitter-outrage/controversy because it just adds more oxygen to all the nonsense of it all.

Umm.  A celebrity hawking Jiffy Lube or Batteries is one thing.  A celebrity saying a candle smells like her lady parts isn't bad actually.  Weird, but not harmful.  A C-lister hawking 'auto-warranty is a bit sleazy and damaging to people.  A person spreading health care misinformation during a pandemic where nearly 1 million people within the US, have died is quite a bit different.    I mean I stole a hello kitty keychain for my sister when I was 5 yrs old.   Charlie Manson tried to start a race war and had people murdered, both are crimes.

Enraged mob?  You are projecting a bit.  And enraged mob tried the murder the sitting Vice President of the United States for doing his job, and other Congressional people because the lost a vote.    Sure when people saw that Hillary lost, some of them cried.  I was sad.  I knew Trump was a fucking disaster and would harm us, our reputation, and our allies while courting a fraudulent relationship.  He is a conman that conned Hollywood with transparent actions.  I was not enraged.   I did not attempt to murder or heck even send strongly worded messages.  I simply bided my time and voted the bastards out.

Your tactic of conflating issues will not work.  It never works on anyone with an above room temp IQ.  It works on republicans, but not me.  Not here.  I knew who you all were for quite a while.   You said who you were with your tactics, gerrymandering, whistles, voter suppression and outright denial of the truth.  You demonized people just for being of a different gender.  You said they were the 'most liberal' person ever each and every time.  You purposely confuse socialism, communism, fascism with liberals and most of your followers are too stupid to understand.

No one is cancelling Joe Rogan.  That is between Spotify.  People are calling him out for his past transgressions and holding him accountable.  You confuse 'cancelling' with consequences.   You tried to cancel the Dixie Chicks you boycotted them because they believed differently than you did about our country.   Those people calling out Joe Rogan and making his past public are just trying to demonstrate their belief he is a dangerous asshole.   He has more influence than Natalie Maines.  He is not sharing a belief that is based on reality and his personal knowledge.  He is spreading harmful disproven bullshit which in turn harms society.   Rush Limbaugh was the same kind of actor.  Spreading lies, a dealer of hate and racism.   He was a horrible person who profited from the damage to discourse.

I mean your side is now promoting a violent terrorist attempt to overthrow the government as discourse.  Your side proudly displays nazi flags and flags and the traitors of the confederacy.   When you look around and find that your allies are all shitheads, and your leaders admire warlords who murder with impunity than maybe you should reconsider where you are.  I live in a nation where most people want a peaceful society.  Your kind want your way or anarchy until you get your way.

Don't you like it when I conflate?

1 Million dead.  That's pretty sensational.  Can you tie the threads together and just ballpark how many of those JR was responsible for?

When a large group of people work in concert to dig up poorly constructed sound bites and publicly pressure companies to "hold him accountable", what do you call that?

**

This crazy rambling doesn't sound like a Joe problem.  It sounds like a You problem.

Something in Joe strikes something in You, so now he suddenly the embodiment of all these other things you dont like - hellodixiekittyjiffylimbaugh - and becomes this target you fixate on.  And now you've all birthed this 50 page thread about he's the demon behind the mic.  That.... is a mob.

Yeah, Rogan doesn't want people to hate him. I mean, not enough to actually change who he is (a dumb meathead who wants to promote conspiracy shit), but he doesn't get off on being hated like real die hard Republicans do. He wants all this shit to die down and he'll make a temporary effort to focus on more innocuous guests, before he inevitably pivots back to the conspiratorial shit because that's what he's into.

Agreed which, to me at least, allows me to give him the benefit of the doubt that he's not a "troll" in the sense that he wants any and all attention for the sake of attention. He wants (positive) attention for his podcast and his product/business. He's a shrewd businessman, it would appear.

Well it really depends on how you use the medium. I have heard Dr. Richard Thaler (Nobel Prize winner in economics) discuss his work on behavioral economics on a podcast and learned a bit about ancient greece.

Agreed, I thought it was a strange overgeneralization. Like all mediums, they can be used for smarts or dumb. I also listen to a lot of economics and history podcasts that I think help keep my mind active since I don't read as much as I used to and can listen while exercising or doing chores. One can also listen to a podcast of a guy in his basement explaining that birds aren't real. On TV you can watch Ken Burns documentaries and learn history in great detail, or watch a bunch of young sluts banging each other in New Jersey. In literature you can read Kant or Vonnegut, or Dear Penthouse Forum.

Something in Joe strikes something in You,

Hmmm.....what could it be?

Could it be him openly abusing callers/guests who would offer facts counter to his belief, to the point of being a raging asshole to them, calling them names, and shutting them down?

Could it be him happily disseminating and amplifying (because one crackpot saying something is one thing....giving them a platform to get their message out to 11 million, while you say "yeah, that's good stuff, listen up people!" is quite another thing -- called "amplifying") dangerous COVID and vaccine misinformation that, if people buy it (and there's a lot of evidence that they have done so), will lead them to taking a path that causes them to suffer and die at a higher rate.....and society will bear the costs for that (healthcare, reduction of resources, families left behind)?

Could it be him nodding along while people pitch horrifically racist/eugenics bullshit about genetic dispositions of black people to be violent?

Yeah.....those things strike something in me.  They're fucking bullshit.  They cause actual harm, as misinformation does, and is INTENDED to do -- that's literally what misinformation does.  It's the worst approach to any public "conversation and dialogue."  Yes, that strikes something in me.  It should strike something in any decent human being of even moderate intelligence.  We have a problem with this.  The fact that you don't says a fuckload about you.

Giving a shit about how things affect the society and people around us is a fucking baseline of being a decent human being, and it's a baseline that as a society, we can't even get to.  That's fucked up.

We've gone around and around, circularly, on this before. I'll remind you: just because you have an opinion doesn't mean it is correct. So yes, if you think that this thing being disseminated broadly is poisonous, then stop ingesting it. Because as of now, it has not been proven to be poisonous and in fact a contingent of people the same size that shares your opinion (or possibly larger) of people think it's not poisonous.
