The Robert Mueller Investigation

This talking point, while objectively true, needs to die in a fire.  We are way past this shit.

The impeachment inquiry move isn’t about removing Trump.  It’s about wielding righteous power.  There is no liability for the democrats to beginning the process now unless they have zero intention of ever impeaching Trump.  With the way Trump is obstructing, they can drag the process out for at least a year and have some control over the media narrative while doing it.

I respectfully disagree.  The Mueller report should be damming, but it’s not because it contains nothing that wasn’t already in the news for months if not years.  If it had dropped at once, it would have been a political nuke.  But it didn’t.  It trickled out piecemeal through mini-shocks revealed by anonymous sources in the news.  And all those revelations were successfully rendered insignificant by that conservative machine having months to undermine the evidence and obvious conclusions.

While we both agree Trump deserves righteous retribution for his conduct, Trump is not a righteous cause for the average citizen — the ones that will be needed to remove him via ballot box.  Sometimes you have to slow play the hand you are dealt.  It’s frustrating as fuck, but I think the worst possible outcome for America is to have 8 years for this conservative movement to cement its ideology into our national governance through controlling the executive branch, stacking the judicial branch and holding half the legislative branch.

It's conservative payback for getting thoroughly destroyed in the culture wars.

This was one of the stupidest lines of questioning from the Rs in a long line of stupid questions yesterday.

Mueller is not so much analytical as he is a loyal, company man. He performed his job admirably, adhering with great discipline to the mandate he was given.

He is not, however, a leader. He clearly did not view his role as anything more than laying out facts (as he saw them): little to no (legal) conclusions, no recommendations, no opinions.

Was this the right thing to do? Maybe history will laud him for this approach.

The people need to act. We have all the information we need to fix this. Sady, the evangelica/deplorables refuse to act. Fuck them.

I'm still hoping that the impeachment timeline is set to begin in the fall.

The rate limiting step is House getting Trump's financials - tax returns and financial data subpoenaed from Deutsche Bank.  After that, House could delay impeachment, but they won't start before.

One week ago: Legal Scholar: Trump Lawyers Just Made a ‘Radical’ Argument in Deutsche Bank Case

Quote

"Lawyers for President Donald Trump on Thursday filed a motion the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit seeking to reverse a lower court’s decision denying Trump’s request for a preliminary injunction to prevent Deutsche Bank from releasing financial records to the House Committee on Financial Services.

In an argument that has taken aback at least one legal scholar. Trump’s attorneys claim that the Constitution prohibits Congress from enacting any legislation that pertains to a sitting president’s finances."

I don't know what's going to happen. But George W. Bush should've been removed from office and thrown into jail for war crimes. He wasn't. I'm accustomed to living in an imperfect world where things that should happen don't always happen.

I'm still hoping that the impeachment timeline is set to begin in the fall.

Tell me more about how impeaching Bush would've stopped war crimes?

One probably always looks at these things based on their own experiences.  I work in a big company, and we often make decisions to remove people because they have done something wrong -- both things that could create legal liability and things that can just make us look bad (ethics).

There's no way this pos clown could have remained as CEO of a publicly held company with a board or stockholders with a pulse.

There is simply a vast number of Americans who are willing to tolerate his conduct, just as there were a lot of American's back in the day who were okay with Clinton's fooling around and the Reagan and Bush foreign policy issues.

Most people try to be consistent and not let party affiliation get in the way of their arguments about what constitutes conduct that should have you removed from office.  Trump seems a bit of a different cat because his cloak of protection isn't the fact that he's a consistent conservative or a creature of any consistency.

It's certainly disappointing seeing him besmirch the country and the office in the odious ways he does.  He's a grotesque clown worthy of no respect.  But there you have it.

The question is whether you are willing to put the time into understanding why good people will ultimately support a grotesque clown or whether his supporters are simply bad people.

I don't know why people become drug addicts or do things that are bad for themselves, but I do know enough decent people who will support Trump or anyone who is against liberal thinking know that all you can do is keep trying to plug away to figure out the mindset so you can combat it.

Republican President: “The Mueller Report totally exonerates me!  I have been exonerated by the Special Counsel!  Exonerated, I say!  EXONERATED!

Mueller: “My report does not exonerate the President.  Prosecutors can’t exonerate someone.”

Republicans: “See?!?  Just like we said, exoneration isn’t even a real thing that the Special Counsel can do.  Democrats and Fake News media are stupid for raising the issue of exoneration in the first place!”

40% of the US Population: “That makes perfect sense to me.”

Without fail, you'll simply latch on to whatever silly argument Sean and Rush and FOX tell you to run with.  It's stunning.  Nobody gives a shit if there's no "Department of Exoneration".  TRUMP has been the one saying he was exonerated -- not Mueller.  And now Trump is floating the opposite because he caught wind of a dumbass congressman trying to make a semantic gotcha while missing the entire fucking point.

No, the Mueller report did not exonerate Trump.  It's not just because Mueller lacked the power to exonerate -- it's because the evidence made it impossible to exonerate (as a matter of English language) even if that power existed.

The simplicity of Trumpkins is breathtaking.  You will quite literally believe anything you are told, with no fact-checking whatsover.

Well after seeing the first wave, post-hearing, of our resident Trump Defenders...I must say I’m not really impressed with their initial ammo of talking points.

Pretty clear they were prepared before the hearing. Gotta give them time to receive talking points that have at least some relevance to what actually occurred

Zavala, how'd you feel about the Iraq War back then?  Today, you're calling Cheney a war criminal.  What happened to all the Fox News fans that were dismissing those of against the war as dirty, naive hippies that hated the troops?  Seems to me there's quite a lot of overlap between the people that bought in to all the Iraq bullshit and Trump lovers today but not many will admit it.

Quite a bit of overlap?

Almost 100% overlap.

And the evangelitards are, as always today, in the middle of it.

Former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III testified on Wednesday before the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committees. Following the hearing, Lawfare brought together Jim Baker, Bob Bauer, Susan Hennessey and Margaret Taylor for a conversation hosted by Benjamin Wittes. They talked about the testimony, what it means for Congress and President Trump, and they talked about Mueller’s legacy as he leaves the scene.

That's because the GOP can't stand for something for longer than ten years anymore. They shift and slide and condemn the things they strongly supported yesterday and support the things they condemned last week. They are not grounded by core principals. They are grounded in idolatry of one dear leader.

Conservatives who still have moral discipline, like George Will for example, are too smart with their fancy pants educations and big words to reach the sleeveless illiteratti. The levee broke and now they support massive, unchecked arms sales to wahhabist muslims. Next week they won't. They'll do what their told.

We believe in nuttzing, Mr Lebowski.

The Fox News/Trump crowd has the loyalty of a goldfish. These are the same people that would eviscerate you as a libtard un-american hippie 20 years ago if you said something bad about W Bush. Same 12 years ago if you said something about Mccain. Same 8 years ago if you said something about Romney. Same 2 years ago if you said something about Paul Ryan. Venture over to the braintrust at Texags and float a trial balloon on either Bush, McCain, Romney, Paul Ryan, etc... They loathe all them now, swamp rinos. Trump is the one and only, cross him and you are cast off the island.

Fast forward to the next Democrat President and watch the "republicans" start to care about the debt/deficit again. Start to care about executive power again. Start to care about Presidential golf trips again. Start to care about obeying subpoenas and the "rule of law" again.  Start to care about sounding "presidential" again. They will dump Trump in the waste bin of history faster than you can say grab her by the pussy. It's a fickle crowd led around by their necks by the ghost of roger ailes. They're passionate about everything, yet believe in nothing. It's quite something to behold.

No, they stand for something. They've always stood for something. It's the same thing conservatives in America have stood for dating back to before our nation existed: white supremacy.  It's the bedrock of everything they believe in.  Everything else has always been coded language to disguise that fact once it became socially unacceptable to be an open white supremacist.

It's a feint.

Trump's camp is floating the presupposition that the Constitution shields Trump's finances from scrutiny, and that it would take passing legislation through Congress to enable it.  The reality is no legislation should need to be enacted.

The most important assessment of the hearings has come to my email box from a close personal friend:

Sean RomaVicta,

Today’s Mueller hearing proves that Democrats have completely lost touch with reality.

The Mueller Report completely EXONERATED President Trump, but Democrats are still insisting on wasting more of YOUR money on this bogus WITCH HUNT.

President Trump emailed you today during the Mueller Hearing because we already knew what Mueller was going to say - NO COLLUSION, NO OBSTRUCTION!

Democrats have realized that the American people will NEVER embrace their big government SOCIALIST agenda, so they’ve resorted to partisan political games.

Back then, and now, I believe that the 911 story we were told is a lie (Mueller's 911 commission report), the WMD story from the CIA was a lie, and that the war was not in America's best interest. I think most of the war we get involved in over there are proxy wars and we are fighting for international interests rather than American ones.

Not all people with differing opinions are Fox watching boomers.

Wait, I'm confused. First he was totally exonerated. Then, people actually read the report and listened to Mueller say that, no, he was most definitely not exonerated. Then it was "oh well Mueller didn't have the power to exonerate anyway!!". Now we're back to totally exonerated?

Edit: Lulz, and it opens with how the democrats have lost touch with reality.

totally missed this one:

@mkraju

Mueller for the first time today refuted under oath that he was a candidate for the FBI director job, which Trump has often claimed is a conflict of interest. He said he spoke to Trump about the FBI director decision but “not as a candidate”

7:01 AM - Jul 24, 2019
