That's fine. Still easier to get those votes.

You think that becoming an idiot is easy.

Despite all of the evidence on this board, it's actually quite difficult for normal humans to speak fluent moron.  It requires a native speaker to lead the way.  And unfortunately, the GQP has pretty much hoovered all of those people up.

I don't think it will be easy. But it will be easier than changing the minds of people who vote for Trump.

Dems are great about fighting at the last minute to delay a bill that will pass regardless of their protests. The problem is when they lost the battles months or years ago when they failed to respectfully tell older Dems/liberals to retire from Congress, the WH or even SCOTUS. And when they have a dynamic, younger (relatively) senator like Franken, they oust him when a censure or other penalty would have sufficed.

And the cycle keeps repeating itself. Sotomayor should have stepped down in 2023 or 24. Yes, she's "only" 71 now but we could easily be looking at a long term GOP rule of the Senate if not WH. We may turn around tomorrow and she's 80+. You might think that she just got to the Supreme Court but this year she exceeded the average tenure (15 yrs) of a justice. Just imagine another justice, like Jackson who is 54 instead of 71.  Damn, there are 2 justices younger than me now.

Hakeem Jeffries should be voted out as Minority Leader the minute he stops talking.

I can't think of a more pointless and cynical exercise designed solely for the purpose of convincing people who don't know any better that Democrats are doing something.

Yes. Politics is performative. I’d rather the Dems play the game to win if that is how it’s done.

He gets a C-/D+ for the semester. At least a damn good final exam score kept him from failing outright.

I'm not sure a multi-hour infomercial in powerlessness is playing to win.

This is fair, but tbh it's pretty much all any minority leader can do. He's it's essentially powerless, especially in trump's congress, to do anything else.

What would you prefer he be doing?

There’s a lot of hate for Jeffries and Schumer over here-what do you think they should be doing differently?

Schumer shouldn’t have caved on the continuing resolution earlier this year.

Jeffries isn’t good enough at public messaging and really should’ve known better from the jump that the right approach was full obstruction and zero bipartisanship, but he’s not nearly as shitty as Schumer.

For starters, it's too little too late. Also he needs to rally behind the winners (Mamdani, AOC) instead of the losers and liabilities (AIPAC).

A good start is not going on a fucking book tour promoting your own anti-Semitism book while the nation burns down?

Dem messaging about the damage this bill will do to millions of Americans and the deaths that will result from the upward transfer of wealth to the richest Amerians should have priority #1 because a people-powered movement is the only defense they have and their only path back into power.

What can they do?

Seems like a plan of storming the capitol, wrecking shit, and trying to hang the VP works out pretty well. Maybe don't follow that exact script, but the battle of "should we try the norms, or should we do batshit insane shit?" has been fought, and the winner is "batshit insane shit," by a fucking mile.

If he's going to engage in obvious political theater, I'd prefer he do it long before the day of the vote.

It's a war.

We need the Army.

Not better messaging.

I do feel like we've avoided the absolute worst case scenario, which would've been all the ICE shit being popular enough for long enough that they were able to go full nazi without really facing much organized resistance. I know it doesn't seem like it, but there has been at least some degree of effective organized resistance (though mostly not from Democratic officials, which would be fucking nice to have) and we've had some small wins here and there. And ICE's kidnappings are incredibly unpopular.  But now, what is probably realistically our best chance basically looks like this:

1. Super-ICE keeps doing the shit ICE has been doing and turning more and more people against them. Thousands die in their concentration camps while Trump hires millions out as slave labor.

2. Dems take the House (and Senate, maybe) in 2026 and stop the bleeding, but probably won't be able to actually substantially reduce ICE's funding or restrain their criminality in any substantive way.

3. Trump runs again (and gets the GOP's nomination) and SCOTUS doesn't object.

4. This pisses off enough people that a Dem wins like 55/45 in 2028 and we have to hope the military's leadership acknowledges the Dem as the new President.

At the end of all of this, we've still got to deal with whatever the fuck ICE has become by 2028, which will likely be an insurrectionary military force that we'll need the army to put down. Then we're going to have to actually prosecute tens of thousands of fascists to the fullest fucking extent of the law, not some piddly one year or time served bullshit, to ensure that they're too scared to come out of their mom's basements for another 100 years.

Thanks, Obama.

They didn't look too happy about it at the Trumptastic Military Parade Birthday Party.

I'm not betting they'll move, but it's not out of the question if Trump issues illegal orders which he will do.

Maybe he can't help himself, but he doesn't need the army now that ICE has more funding than any military outside of us and China. They're his own private army.

Let's hope he orders an invasion of Canada. That might do it. Not sure much else would.

Even if all the magat’s parents died because they lost their health insurance, they would still vote for dotard over Obama.  No Dem presidential candidate will ever win most of the south.

Seriously, does not seem like much of a story. There is more than enough to ridicule the guy on, this seems quite messed up (and they have his SAT scores apparently).

Jamelle Bouie posted on Blue Sky that he thought a reporter should reveal when their source is a Nazi and was made to delete it by the Times brass.

Ok. Two questions

1) but is is true?

and if it is;

2) does the source matter?

Mamdani is both Asian and was literally born in Uganda. Checking two accurate boxes on a college application isn’t doing anything wrong and it’s not fucking newsworthy. The fact that the Times is taking assignments from Nazis and giving the Nazis anonymity should be a much bigger story.

This bill takes the ICE budget from 8 billion to 30 billion. We are funding Trump’s deportation army.

That’s sophistry.

It was certainly politically motivated hacking, but since we unfortunately live in an era when literal Nazis are out in public again, we probably shouldn’t say it was “Nazis” unless actual fascist white nationalists is who we are talking about.

That said, it really doesn’t matter. Mamdani has presented himself as a champion of working people and minorities, and while this this has clearly made him appealing in NYs affluent and well creative class, his support has not been very strong with black and working class voters.
Claiming to be “black or African American” as a person with two Indian parents will make that worse. It looks like an attempt to access a racial preference that was made available at Columbia to address the long term structural inequities that resulted from black African slavery, and you know that. And he almost certainly knew it when he checked the box on a technicality. I know a rich white guy who was born in Nigeria. Is he African American? I know multiple Afrikaans people whose parents fled when apartheid ended- should they be able to access affirmative action? Of course not and you know that too.

Speaking as the kind of person who comes from a working class background that Mamdani needs to win the general: this looks like yet another example of the children of privilege attempting to cut the line.

And, unfortunately, even if it doesn't reflect poorly on him, it's one of those edge cases in which affirmative action (DEI!) is actually inequitable.
