KXAN is running a story about the Black's  BBQ feud.  I have no idea how much is truth and how much is fiction:

Black's & Terry Black's

As someone who recently moved into Central Texas from East Texas, this was a good read.  I admit having seen the various signs for different Black's BBQs and being confused so it's nice to have that story clarified.

I watched the documentary the other day.  It was done pretty well and explained the feuds between the Kent Black and his nephews and between the Schmidt family.

A couple years ago, I was talking with Kent Black at ACL Fest.  He was there doing some barbecue demonstration.  My wife walked up and introduced herself.  Upon learning who he was and not knowing the difference between Terry Black's and Blacks', she mentioned the nice new barbecue joint that had recently opened in Lockhart.  I can't imagine the look on my face when she said that.  Kent went on to explain how the nephews had essentially screwed him and their grandmother by banking on the Black's barbecue name.  I had to explain what was up afterwards.

After watching the documentary, my wife said "now I don't feel bad about what I said to Kent Black - he's a real asshole."

Gave Louie Mueller another shot. Split beef rib and a sausage link. I take all previous overall statements back. This meal slammed.

/edit: I hopped in the car an downed six fiber supplements.  Then we played a game of can we make it to the DoubleTree on 290/I35 before things go south. We made it . . . just.  Lunch has been liquidated.

I love the technical analysis here.  But ate BBQ, relieved post meal misery with a proper shit.  Took nap.  Went to dinner.  Profit.

Uh, we gotta talk

Weavers BBQ is one of the best bbq joints in Texas. Def in my top 5. Better than Tejas, better than Truth, better than Corkscrew, better than Pinkertons. Best bbq ive had in SE Texas (only spot i havent tried is Redbird though).

The Texas Trinity Platter included three 1/2 pound meats and two sides and a drink for $40. Also got the smoked bread pudding. They brought out a Texas twinkie and 1/2 pound turkey gratis. Theyve been open for 5 years and are considering a move in the near future to I45/242 area.

The owner and his buddies used to be hitchhikers (and from what I can tell, maybe used to use meth) across the US. One day they bought a smoker and started selling chopped beefs on the side of the road. That snowballed into this.

Brisket - fantastic. Held together perfectly but still tender and fell apart with slightest pull.

Ribs - top 3 best ribs ive ever had. Exquisite.

Sausage - good, went great with their signature yellow dijon sauce.

Smoked bread pudding - insane. I dont even like bread pudding that much and this was awesome, especially for the price.

Texas twinkie - ohhhh boy. Better than Hurtado and hutchins. Why? Because they use half jalapenos (they charge $10 for 3 twinkies) and candy their bacon first! Man, might be the best bite of food ive had thus far in 2025.

turkey - kept it in box, havent tried yet. Taking it home.

The price tag for that pic above? $46. I didnt even finish half of it. Go before people find out

That's a legitimate bargain these days.

On my Father's Day weekend trip to Port Lavaca, we hit City Market on the way down and Lavaca BBQ on the way back.

I go to CM every time I head to the coast and it greatly exceeded expectations this time. The brisket was better than usual, and I always like it.

Lavaca was very good and deserving of its recent recognition. Ribs were too sweet for me and the beans were bland, but the serrano sausage and brisket were as good as other top 10/50s I've been to since the '21 list came out.

All-day, bar-restaurant format with separate bar menu sounds like LeRoy & Lewis.

A little more accurately, it sounds like he’s copying the playbook of what John Lewis is doing in South Carolina. Parlaying his experience at La into an all-day venture outside of Texas.

I went to micklethwaite this weekend, my first time at their brick and mortar. The line was surprisingly small and I had our food in about twenty minutes. The brisket was an A, perfectly seasoned and well cooked, but not perfect. The Czech Tex sausage was a B+. Really well seasoned, but too dry (how does a business that's been opened this long make dry sausage?). The pork ribs were a B+ as well. Again, well seasoned, but a bit tough and dry. I think they were cooked at too high of a temp. The sides were spectacular. The greens were an A+ and some of the best I've ever had. The cole slaw was great with lemon and poppy seeds. The Mac and cheese was also stellar, especially the bites with the browned pieces of cheese. We had a great time and enjoyed our food, but it wasn't as good as the times I've had it catered. They really need to work on QC of the actual bbq.

Had lunch at Moreno today.  WTF is wrong w/ you people? Zero people in line at 11:45 and *maybe* 10 people eating (including the 2 of us) before noon.  Filled up a little bit after 12, but oddly all olds - like geriatric olds.  My 1st time here and it was excellent.  Brisket was really good, but the ribs and sausage were excellent - some of the best ribs I've eaten.  Much bigger menu than I expected and I'll have to go back for some pork belly and a beef rib at some point.

Obligatory looks dry af, but there are just too many options central/north for me to venture down there during the weekday. Hell, I had a free day last weekend and skipped out on L&L and I was actually in the neighborhood but didn’t want to deal with the line.

Mostly just spoiled these days and am fine with what’s close and doesn’t have a big line.

I’ve eaten there twice and never had anything good. That’s my limit for restaurants. I’ll never go back. They must have exceptionally bad QC.

That's a bummer.  I was really impressed.

Dropped by Burnt Bean Co Barbecue in Seguin on the way home today.   Arrived about 10:35 and the line wasn't too bad.  They open at 8:00 on Sundays for brunch, so the line was already moving.

The menu is so vast, it's difficult to decide.  To cope, we got food for lunch and food for dinner (and probably another lunch and dinner.

Half pound of moist brisket, two pork ribs, and a baked sweet potato . . . and . . . the Casanova - huevos rancheros with brisket and barbacoa.

20241006_114654.thumb.jpg.0eb91e028f952a9c86e5acf20f9b7810.jpg

Another half pound of moist brisket, two poblano and jack cheese sausage links, and two smoked pork chops to go.

Everything we've had so far was delightful.  Really looking forward to the sausage and pork chops.

@El Tri This was my report from a Sunday morning Burnt Bean trip back in October.

Yeah I am just worried now that they were voted #1 the lines are just insane now

I would imagine they’re not 1-1 with October, but give it a shot and see what happens… I doubt you’ll leave hungry.

I finally got to go to Leroy and Lewis yesterday.

fb912c936855e264d37c38aeeff649b8.jpg

Long line. Maybe 35 minutes at 2:45pm
They were out of brisket
Quality was excellent
Service was great
Beer was cold

But not my favorite. I prefer traditional central Texas BBQ and sides. This is hipster BBQ, which is cool for many people, but not my jam.

Patillos BBQ - Went in for the history. I believe its the 2nd or 3rd oldest continually operated joint in the state.

Two meat plate with brisket and hot link. $16. Wasnt expecting it to be good. It wasnt good. Top 3 worst bbq ive ever had. I took one bite of each thing and threw the entire thing in the parking lot dumpster.

Had Stiles Switch last night, holy hell that place is just so consistently good. Ribs and brisket were great as always.

You must be the reason they stopped accepting orders on Uber Eats last night…

Had to settle for WingzUp!
