Obviously Sam had much more of a gamer mentality.  He was a far superior runner.  He was less of a passer.  I think Sark could have used him well.

Great summary. Now we have Manning who solves the "He was less of a passer." element. Now Sark must build a team around Arch and quickly. Manning is only going to be at UT for a limited time. If Sark can think Alabama at its Sabin peak.

Outside of Nick’s last name spelling, yes you are correct. We’ve got two years with Arch to rise to the ultimate prize, as a team and individual player. He will go to the NFL after hopefully two amazing seasons and so much program defining success to hold on to. Of course all this is forward thinking, but I really think he has the tools to be awesome. Maybe eventually even be better than his Uncles, as he has Grandpa’s speed and agility.

A quick exercise to properly reset your expectations of college QB play is to envision how Hudson Card would have performed in this game

If anything, the playoffs show you that you don’t need an elite qb to win the whole thing. Howard and Leonard are going up against each other. Geeze.

We could’ve won it all with Quinn but we didn’t. Idiotic play calling and lack of a constient run game against good teams really screwed us.

What it does show is you need a dual threat qb or one that will run if needed. Even in the NFL. True Pocket passers are far and in between

Yes. I think so.
I know one thing, Sam would be able to bulldoze his way into the endzone from the 1 given 4 tries. Also, the defense would have the respect him running and playing accordingly. Something they didn't have to do with Quinn. Not to mention, he can escape pressure and a play isn't dead just because of pressure like Quinn.

But, now here me out now, he can't throw the fucking football. Lol. You know, the main part of the job. It's like y'all forgot what Sam was really like.

I really liked Ehlinger but probably don't hold him up as highly as some others on here. But he was tough as fuck and sacrificed his body every week for Texas. I understand why fans would love him.

They aren’t elite, but they have some mobility.

Sam can definitely throw the ball, he just didn’t have the strongest arm. Ball placement was also an issue at times.

Elhinger, Ewers, tomato, tomato. they did it differently, but kind of similar guys. QBs with flaws, but good college players. You could argue for days over which was better, which is likely given this thread

Counterpoint, Ewers turned the ball over 6 times in the 3 losses, and had at least 1 TO in the last 6 games of the season.

I’m not sure Quinn is better overall than Simms.  It’s close

we ran Casey out of town and rightfully so. However he threw for 24 tds and 9’ints his only year as a starter.  Not that far from Quinns numbers while playing with less talent

It would be great if he is qb3.  I think he can get there

Cheers to Quinn. Great Longhorn

nvm thought you were talking about Case

There is a reason you find very few two way players.  Travis Hunter was not as good at either by virtue of this.  A QB like Sam is similar.  The manner in which he was used as a runner absolutely lessened his effectiveness as a passer.  His mental preparation.  His physical preparation.  Off-season and in-season.  To expect him to be consistent throwing as a guy like Ewers is asinine.

Versus LSU.  Sam passed for 400 yards with 4 TDs.  He also had 19 rushes.  67 touches.  The carries beyond Sam were 17 for 61.  There also was easy TD drop in there.  I’m not sure there’s anyone today that has that burden at QB.

That LSU team was better than any we’ve played the past two seasons.  That non-QB run game was not much different than any of the shit shows this season.

I use this as an example because the talk after UGA2 was Ewers threw for tons of yards.  No run game.  UGA scored what 22?  Yeah LSU scored more.

Sam was not aesthetically pleasing throwing the ball.  Fans are all too often wrapped up in that.  And too wrapped up in perfection.  He was more football player than possessing a great physical trait.  He also made many a great throw that seemingly gets disregarded because we don’t like his throwing motion or it lacks the requisite RPMs.

Sam almost always gave you chance even late in the game.  Sometimes against the odds.  He’s got a loss on his ledger with a fumble on the TCU 1 and subsequent failure of the defense to get the ball back.  A loss after taking the lead at ISU in which an offside killed the clock and the FG won it.  I guess that’s on him.

Sam fumbled late vs usc.  Blindly threw a pick vs osu when we had first and goal.  Also slid too soon vs wva that cost us a first down.

Quinn,

Thank you.

For a Sugar Bowl semifinal season, and a Cotton Bowl semifinal season, there was a family who really enjoyed watching you sling it around.

Thank you for 4th and 13.

Thank you for the Worthy pass in Tuscaloosa.

Thank you for 49-0.

Thank you for winning the final Big 12 CCG.

Thank you for beating aggy.

Thank you for mentoring the next guy.

When you were on the field we always had hope that the next play could go for 6.

My son will outgrow his Ewers jersey soon, and he'll wear someone else's.  That's just how this goes. I'm sure my wife will put it in a box somewhere with hopes that it will hold memories. Maybe one day one of us will see you in the NFL or see that worn jersey and remember you.

For then and now, thank you.

One factor for dual-threat guys is the hits accumulate over a season, especially one like Sam that was used as a battering ram. Your body takes a pounding and stats can mirror that over the course of the season.

That was a Freshman Sam. He also led the come back vs USC, when it seemed over.

That he did.  Were those fumbles as a freshman?  There was the Tech pick too.

I have no recollection of that versus WVU.  I do recall him converting 3rd and 10 when they rushed 1.

Stop with the Sam vs Quinn comparisons. Two totally different players, which I love and admire both for their efforts on the 40.

But hey, apples to oranges, ok:
Sam = John Wayne
Quinn = Brad Pitt

Just for an example. Like/love each other over time, but to say one is better than another is just opinionated.

Hey asshole, and when I say that, I don’t really mean it.

Comparisons are difficult because environments are vastly different.

Look at my Sam comments as appreciation for him.

Quinn ewers, one of the longhorns quarterbacks of all-time.

Fuck this take.

He didn’t win the heisman like we expected but he played his best ball in the playoffs. He was 2 plays away from 2 championship game appearances. His record speaks for itself.

Would you rather have Hudson Card? David Ash? Case McCoy? Casey Thompson? Swoopes? Heard? Who am I missing?

Modern Texas football QB Rushmore is VY, Colt, QE, Sam. We can debate the rankings but come the fuck on.

Thanks for beating aggy and pig

Thanks for the first conference championship since 2009

Thanks for a Peach Bowl and two CFP Quarterfinals

The Mount Rushmore of Texas QBs has to be Vince Young, James Street, Bobby Layne, and Colt McCoy, right? The gap from those guys to the next tier of quarterbacks is pretty wide and far I would think. That tier would include Sam Ehlinger, Quinn Ewers, Major Applewhite, Chris Simms, and James Brown?

Can droppednit? News to me and everyone else with eyeballs

edit: not sure my point here but leaving it as a testament drunkenness. Still though, qe isn’t Rushmore worthy in the modern era. If he is, it’s cause there haven’t been enough not because of worth

And like you, I hold John Wayne in the Mount Rushmore of my personal actors. Just saying both were great in their own right, but in different times and eras. Kind of like saying who was better between Street and VY. Both immortals IMO, but that’s my opinion.
