Maybe this will be the wake-up call he needs to get some help.

And at least nobody got hurt.

Alcoholism is a bitch.

I would pay good money to be a fly on the wall for a Bob Huggins rehab assignment or an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

One of my favorite scenes is from a British series called Cracker (there was a US version, too, but it's not as good). I highly recommend it if you like police dramas, and in particular the kind of interrogation scenes Matthew McConaughey portrayed in the first season of True Detective. In any case, the protagonist, played by Robbie Coltrane in his best role, starts going to group therapy to address his gambling addiction to try to save his marriage. But he can't stand the therapist, so in the middle of the group session he pulls out a deck of cards and starts exhorting everyone in the room to bet on what the next card will be. Soon enough he has everyone broken down going full on into the vice they're there to get treated.

I see Bob Huggins doing something similar.

Not to make light of alcoholism or any other addiction. But it is to make fun of Bob Huggins.

The scary part about that Burger King receipt is that the closest BK is miles away. There is no BK on the North Side so he was most likely down Rt 65.

He had to drive a pretty good distance to get where he was. And, a lot of people park for stadium events where he was ticketed.

Thank God he didn’t kill some young girls all crazy excited for the Taylor Swift show who maybe were not paying the most attention to traffic.

Even worse:

The WV job is better than people think.

The Big 12 is the best basketball conference in the country and their donors are fully on board buying players. They are apparently fully invested in NIL for basketball. They  bought Edwards and Krissa over programs you wouldn't expect WV to be outbidding.

As a coach, the first thing I would be looking for is a program that's going to buy me players.

Yes because coaches in college football and basketball pick jobs based on how cool or not it is to live in that city. 🙄

Imagine if someone was into outdoor recreation like hiking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, etc and wasn't into urban amenities.  Their thoughts on living in Morgantown would be dramatically different.

Slight tweak.

once again, this is how fans think.

Name me 10-15 coaches over the last 20 years who have taken a job because they liked the outdoor recreation, the locale, etc.? Would you take the job at Florida International or at the university of San Diego because you liked that climate, locale, etc.?

My point is message boards think like a fan thinks. It’s evident when people on this board make fun of recruits going to aggy because “who wants to live in college station?!?!” When college station is nothing more than a Katy, Arlington, Round Rock really.

Coaches mostly take jobs because it’s a step up from where they are and the believe they can win a NC there, not because of the locale. Now, could there be a coach (or have been a coach) that took a job because it was a “cool place to live”? Sure, I’m not saying it’s not absolutely false, but you’ve never seen or heard this from coaches—only fans.  Fans think like fans, not like college coaches or recruits.

College Station differs not so much in scenery, activities, weather, etc. so much as it differs in the student population.  Those people are really fucking weird.

Oh, I agree with this completely.  I was just making the counter argument that to a certain mindset, Morgantown is far more appealing than a lot of places.

I realize you aren't the poster making that argument - you were merely responding to it.

I’m into all that stuff

Motown is still the shittiest place I’ve ever lived by far

I mean I literally took what I thought was a dream job in Morgantown and left within 5 years because the place sucked so bad

But ok y’all know way better than me

Funny how y’all talk about what an appealing place Austin is while making a case for the UT job being great but ignore the flip side of that argument

WVU is a fine job for a person on the rise. Go there and get the credentials to leave ASAP. That’s what I did. It’s what Beilen, Rich Rod, Holgs, etc did. It’s what Neal Brown is trying (and failing) to do

Its an attractive job to someone on the rise but not an attractive job to a big name known quantity imo

I’m going to assume that has more with what you want than it being inherently shitty.

Granted I’ve only spent two nights there, but it really seemed like a hidden gem.

"Could have helped but turned your back" is probably applicable to many people around him, by the sound of it. Starting I'm guessing with family who would have presumably known better than anyone.

Having done many stupid things related to alcohol in my life before cleaning my shit up, it's never, ever, a bad idea to approach someone and just say "Hey, I'm concerned about this." That hurdle of "it's really none of my business" is massive. But then it's following up, sticking with it and of course that person being willing to change their actions. I've done it at work with dudes who were using, and coached others to do it for their friends.

She's not wrong that others probably have turned their back or ignored it but I'm sure that was rampant and much more than a couple of administrators. There had to be a ton of people.

And nothing to absolve Huggins, obviously. He made the choices.

You spent 2 nights there to drink and watch a sporting event. That's very different than living your life there.

Literally everyone who can leave the town leaves the town. I came in with about 20-30 new professors about ten years ago. ONE is still there.

Anyways it's not about me. I just don't think it's an attractive job unless you're on your way up or a Chris Beard like rehab situation.

I rarely drink anymore, but there was a time where my buddy and I blew .40 in a bar breathalyzer. We walked to the closest all night restaurant and called his wife to come pick us up.

My dad died from drinking (cirrhosis) and had two dui’s. It sucked being an aging alcoholic. What was once his friends at the tennis club, strip joints and bars disappeared. Hr blew out his knees and shoulders from tennis and lost his retirement due to his wife’s gambling. She had holes to fill and those holes were real. They were quite the couple, she lost enough at the casinos so that he could drink for free.  No one came to visit regularly as his best friend had Alzheimer’s and his buddy’s wife never forgave him for permitting her husband to meet up with an old girlfriend at the 50th HS class reunion. So he isolated himself by watching the golf channel and reading mystery novels while drinking and drinking.

Had to learn that was not the road I wanted to take. The spark was having two young kids running around while I suffered through hangovers. The kids are grown, so now I have blowouts once or twice a year. And why drink alone if I’m loosening inhibitions.

I was part of an over 50 basketball group and every once in a while we’d get an email that Bob died at age 77 while playing basketball at the JCC. Condolences to Bob and his family but also congratulations. Way to go Bob that’s the way to do it.

Good luck to bob and his daughter. Maybe he can find a pickle ball court somewhere.

Absolutely.  Yeah, I'm not really arguing against the experience you or your coworkers have had.  I just don't know how, for me anyhow, living in a college town in the mountains could suck.  And I'm assuming there are other people like me in the world.  That's all.

Of course, I haven't lived in a college town since I was 22, but I've often felt it's the kind of environment I could live in.

It's not really a college town is the thing. Ann Arbor is a college town. Morgantown is a burnt out dilapidated West Virginia town with a college there.

Morgantown has no independent movie theater, no independent bookstore, no cool record/music store, no museums, no art galleries, etc. etc. etc. It's just a bunch of shitty undergrad bars and then a couple nice bars & restaurants. The traffic is also all fucked and it can literally take an hour to drive 3 miles at certain times of day. Every day.

It's fine for a day or two, but there's only a day or two worth of stuff to do there.

There's a reason why Huggy's drunk ass was hanging out in Pittsburgh instead of Motown.

Don’t think you’ll be getting that job with the Morgantown Chamber of Commerce.
