The S&D hire just confirms to me that Pierce is going to have to work some magic over the next 6 weeks to keep his seat. CDC is money whipping the best of the best for sports like Beach and S&D, he isn’t going into the SEC in a revenue sport with a guy who can’t build a roster or a coaching staff.

Unless I missed some news about Eddie Reese getting fired (as opposed to retiring), there's a difference between having to hire the best available for a vacancy and firing the current guy to hire the best available.

@YGIFS   Do you have a sub to the Statesman ?   Would also like to read Mark's link.   TIA.

I honestly don't understand almost every word in that post.  TIA?  Mark?  I used to read the Statesman but that was years ago.  About the last time we were really good at baseball.

The post directly above #2760.  My bad,  thought I recalled you posting Statesman articles.

9 teams in the country rank in the top 50 nationally in ERA, Batting Average and Slugging Percentage and we are one of them. 7 of the 9 are ranked in the top 20 this morning (A&M, Tennessee, Oregon State, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Florida State, Duke). Texas and Creighton the only two who aren't.

I have not looked but Texas has to damn near lead the country in Slugging % & BA when there are two outs.

Some of this pitching staff reminds me another fond Harry Caray memory.  I can't remember if it was on the radio or WGN, but early in the season...some middle relief pitcher was just getting shelled for a couple games...couldn't get an out.  And Steve Stone, great pitcher by trade before being a great color man is in the booth.  And you can hear papers shuffling (stat sheets).  And Stoney is talking about this pitcher's struggles in April.  And Harry goes, "Stoney, I dunno.  You know more about pitching than I do.  But it says here he's got 0.0 ERA, he's gotta be doing something right."  And then Stoney delicately explains to Harry it's an "Infinity" symbol meaning he's given up a buncha runs and gotten no batters out yet.  Caray comes back with, "Well like I said, you know more about pitching than me."

Anyway, that's how I feel about some guys on our staff.  We're just not recruiting pitching like we used to.  Dunno.

Grant Fontenot is now a free agent. Had a huge blowup after his poor outing on Saturday and started screaming at one of the coaches (not Pierce).

I thought it was lame to pull him after 2 batters but at the same time that's part of baseball. Sounds like he has an attitude problem and needs a change of scenery.

I thought it was pretty lame he threw 7 pitches that included a walk and HBP.

Gonna guess if he was shown the door it likely wasn’t his first strike (pun intended).

He was on his 3rd school in 3 years.

Was thinking the game tomorrow will probably get canceled for weather but then I remembered it is in San Marcos. It is pretty much their only sell out of the year and I’m sure need that gate revenue/concessions/parking/whatever.

They would want to play in a hurricane.

I wouldn't cancel a game at home that I was going to win.

Excerpts from the Statesman.   Grubbs Friday,  Ace Sat, Sun TBA

Pierce said that Texas will shake up its pitching rotation this weekend. Max Grubbs will be UT's Friday starter and Ace Whitehead will remain in his Saturday slot. Pierce has not yet revealed who will pitch on Sunday

Texas used Johnson in relief during a game at Texas State on Tuesday. He allowed four hits and a run over two innings.

"One of the reasons why we threw him yesterday is just to get him back out there, build some confidence, pounding the strike zone and building off of that," Pierce said. "That's just where we are right now"

Pierce has traditionally not been a coach who likes to hold team meetings following wins or losses. But the Longhorns quickly retreated to the locker room after the final out on Wednesday was recorded. After he eventually emerged from meeting with his team to speak with reporters, Pierce said "we've just got to play better. It starts with me."

3 game series with the Cougars in the HTX this weekend.  Anyone going?  We'll probably go Sunday afternoon.

Going on Sunday with a few of my kids. It's pathetic that I'm worried about seeing a loss to frigging UH. Also, on a personal level, I really despise one of Todd Whitting's asshole kids so losing to these fuckers will really suck.

I have been on teams like that. Once you start losing, it becomes contagious, you start finding ways to lose and choking in the big moments. Really easy to lose the locker room after that unless you are an amazing coach. There are always a couple of guys who give 1000% but the majority of the team just quits and starts looking forward to next season.

One of the things I have heard is that Pierce is a raging dick to play for/work with. That shit may work if you are winning and people can go "It is worth dealing with asshole HC because I am getting better/team is winning etc". Once you start losing the wheels quickly come off. Love reading he had a post game meeting last night. The Tuesday night loss to fucking Corpus Christi wasn't cause for alarm? Getting beat by BYU just passed him by but the TX State loss was the bridge too far for Pierce?? WTF?

CDC can't fall for the sunk cost fallacy with DP. DP is not the coach to head into the SEC with. Fire his ass and bring in someone that can energize the team and fan base. If you think this season has been shitty, ride this clown car into the SEC next year and just watch Texas fall to all time lows in terms of series wins/execution.

Fire this shitty HC, It has been 8 years and team is regressing and getting worse as season progresses. Compare to Softball which is ascending, women's BBall same. It is a coaching problem.

I sure as hell hope y'all are correct and we don't have to see Pierce attempt to readjust again.

His assistant coaching hires have been very poor, and he's been bad at leading his staff. It's also obvious he doesn't trust anyone else to be the pitching coach, which is a giant red flag.

I don't think CDC is going to allow Pierce another shot if this season keeps going south. This isn't women's soccer - it's a revenue sport, and one that is has a massive legacy at Texas. Pierce was never CDC's guy to begin with, and I doubt he's going to trot him out into the SEC when every other program is top-tier, or at least competitive. My assumption is, pending something crazy in terms of a positive readjustment this season, Pierce is on borrowed time.
