Randall's in West Lake Hills is excellent. But go ahead and stay away. More Topo Chico 12 packs for me (which HEB in Westlake doesn't sell).

I hate it. The only thing good about it is the fried chicken.  The Westlake HEB sells Topo, they are just frequently out of it.

If they conduct fake hangings or throwing them in jail, I assume that is no longer protected under free speech. Just wondering where the line is drawn. I would think going up to Jerry Seinfeld and saying Death to Jews is fine but something directed specifically at the comedian like you are next (as opposed to just calling him a Jew) is actionable justifying criminal charges that would probably get dropped.

"The violence we witnessed last night has irrevocably shaken many of us on the Review," the editors of the Columbia Law Review wrote.

First time ever that being an editor on law review harming rather than helping future job prospects.

Just serving up red meat for the opposition by appeasing the extremists.

Just to clarify, what is the "red meat", who is the "opposition", and who are the "extremists" that you mean? Israel appears to be ramping up to fully invade and take land by aggression.

That isn't something my tax dollars should be going to. They should be going to wars of national defense, like in Ukraine, rather than wars of aggression that has killed tens of thousands of civilians while killing a few thousand terrorists.

That’s great and I can even agree with much of what you are saying, however as this is an election year this is not the best time for this.

As a moderate who does not want “he who shall not be named” reelected, not supporting Israel will rally his base and alienate many in the middle who do not agree with these protests/protesters. I’m firmly in the camp of sit down and shut up for the next few months and don’t give the opposition any ammunition.

You can have which ever opinion you wish, but caving to the childish antics of those so far extreme that even liberal Saturday night live is making fun of…doesn’t bode well for November. We’re past the primaries, where the candidates historically are supposed to be pivoting to the middle.

Keeping the status quo would be the middle. Increasing shipments of weapons would lean too far right, restricting shipments leans too far left and thus they are handing “red meat” to the opposition who will use it like a cudgel during this election cycle to sway those in the middle.

It’s highly likely that anyone supporting Palestine is already in your camp. So while you can celebrate this as a short term win for that cause, this may be one of the things that could hand the election of your the opposition. And if they win, what do you think the ramifications will be to the Palestinian cause? Win the battle but lose the war.

That’s as close to a CR from me as you’re bound to get.

Historically speaking, shutting up and sitting on your hands and hoping that the authoritarians will stop and go away is not very successful. Analyzing every action taken and worrying about "handing red meat" is a red herring.

They'll always find something to demonize and convert into red meat for the base. So just do what you were gonna do already because they already were going to grab whatever they could find and swing it like a cudgel.

Also, just a point of order, "national socialist" was an intentional misnomer to troll the socialists and engender working class support. Nazis and authoritarians are intellectually dishonest fucks, whodathunkit

@TKthunder2

Take the results from this recent poll (note the date and time of its release) for whatever it's worth, but the status quo of US support isn't too popular. Yeah, some of the protesters' antics have been ridiculous/unacceptable, but that doesn't mean the core message is necessarily unpopular.

Americans' Support for Israel Aid Slides
Published May 06, 2024 at 11:25 AM EDT

The number of Americans who believe the United States should decrease the amount of financial and military support it provides to Israel is rising, according to a poll.

A Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey of 1,500 eligible voters, conducted exclusively for Newsweek on May 1, found that 36 percent believed the U.S. should decrease aid to Israel amid its ongoing war with Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, a rise of 9 points from 27 percent in a previous poll from March.

The latest poll also found that fewer people (30 percent) believe the U.S. should "maintain" the amount of financial and military aid to Israel compared to March (39 percent). Nearly a third (31 percent) of voters think the U.S. is currently providing "too much" support to Israel, more than those who believe the U.S. proves "too little" (24 percent) or the "right amount" (25 percent).

The survey arrives after Congress passed a series of foreign aid bills, which included providing nearly $15 billion in additional military aid to Israel amid the Hamas conflict in the wake of the October 7 attack by the militant group that killed 1,200 Israelis. President Joe Biden has faced scrutiny, including from progressive members of the Democrat Party over his handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

Biden has also faced accusations that is helping support a genocide of the Palestinian people by backing Israel and failing to call for a permanent ceasefire. At least 34,735 Palestinians have been killed and more than 78,100 injured in Gaza during Israel's military attacks since October 7, Reuters reported, citing Gaza's Health Ministry.

The survey also found that 40 percent of voters disapprove of Biden's response to the war in Gaza, including nearly a quarter (24 percent) saying they "strongly disapprove." A total of 29 percent said they approve of how Biden is handling the conflict, giving the president a net approval rating on the issue of -11 points.

Note for full transparency: 538 rates them a little above the middle of the pack, ranked 110 out of 277.

This has been in the works for a couple of weeks and has way more to do with the invasion of Rafah than college protests. They’re just hoping these college kids see the headline and then go back to scrolling tiktok. It’ll probably work.

Totally different argument. The protestors have totally wasted their time.

So this proves my point.

31% too much Support for Israel
25% think this is the right amount
24% too little
20% who the fuck knows

At least 49% prefer the status quo or more.

So the current government in power is going to make 31% happy that are already in their camp. We know the other side has generally less than 50% of the vote so a good portion of that “right amount” are likely swing voters that could decide the election.

That is my only point here.

Not if the share of those who feel US aid should decrease keeps rising. But, yes, I'll concede it's a mixed bag right now, though opposition could keep growing. We'll have to see how the Rafah invasion is handled and how Americans react to any potential excess carnage.

Another 9-point rise (45%) would constitute a clear plurality of opposition.

Ohio Revised Code 3761.12 makes it a felony to commit a crime with two or more people while wearing white caps, masks or other disguise

Oooooh man that's some good turning a shield into a sword and finding an old law meant to target klansmen and now using it to shut down peaceful assembly. To use that law in that way is an implicit equivocation of what these university protesters are doing to what the KKK was doing.

It's diluting what the KKK was and did and STILL FUCKING IS to threaten and target college students with this law
