1B per year cut from Pell grants. Increase to 15 hours a semester from 12 to be eligible so Pell grant won’t cover as much and harder to work and go to school

many subsidized loan programs eliminated, the ones that are left are capped at 50k per year

repayment options limited

still cannot discharge through bankruptcy

Going to affect millions of MAGA voters and their families. Oh well they can pick grapes and process chickens I guess

We should seriously think of walling off New York City and making it a prison. It would save us so much money

There's an answer for when you find yourself on the Titanic.  Get the fuck off.

Seriously, if you have any means or mechanism and you are NOT looking at abandoning this doomed ship, you're doing it wrong.

If only man.

We got a prison surrounded by alligators and performative wrestling on the lawn of the white house. This sounds familiar but I just can’t quite put my finger on it.

Within minutes of yesterday's bill passage, I received a propaganda email from the Social Security Administration, the text was the same as their post here.

I'm not sure why I got it.  I'm not due for benefits for a long time.  I did request a social security statement of past wages and an estimate of future benefits a few years ago, the thing they used to send in the mail.

The email talks about how the bill "ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits".  Well, currently about 64% of seniors already don't pay tax on SS benefits.  So about 25% of seniors may get a new tax benefit in the form of an increased deduction.

The email also says "The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. Additionally, it provides an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they have earned."  I'm reading the bill and I don't think the first sentence is true.  The second sentence is true, they provided a new $6000 exemption for those over 65 that qualify.  The second sentence (the deduction) is what they are claiming provides the first sentence (elimination of SS tax).  They are stating it twice as if they were separate benefits.

The new $6000 deduction expires in four year and is phased out for above certain income levels ($75,000 for individuals, $150,000 for couples).  It's unclear to me if you have to itemize to get the deduction or if it is more like an exemption.

Had they NOT included this section in the bill, the $4000 personal exemption would have come back for everyone below the exemption phaseout income level, which was $250k-$300k in 2015 depending on your filing status.

Seniors are going to read this email and think that Trump eliminated tax on Social Security.  It will be used as a rallying cry in the mid-terms.  No such thing happened.  One in four seniors may get a new benefit, and had the government done nothing at all then most of us would have gotten a benefit.  And the administration is pushing out misleading information presented as official government communications.

This is Trump's America.

I’m sure that everyone who has set up an account with an email address got sent the email.

I know several people who would never vote for a Democrat for this exact reason.

Poors don’t need to be lawyers. Let’s keep those higher earning jobs available only to the well to do.

I think it was Jesus who said, “Legacy scholarships are a blessing to God, but the poors will always be with us ….and not needed in professional schools as long as soon-to-be-ripe agricultural products need picking.”

Jesus never said the words “upward mobility”

That low-rent white trash brain-addled treasonous narcissistic incurious unstudious abusive dipshit just claimed from the White House lawn that the passage of his One Big Beautiful Bill represents a "triumph of Democracy on the birthday of Democracy".

Why don't you time travel back well prior to the birth of Christ and talk to the Greeks about that, Donald?

Trump pushed for this to give him and his family a big tax break. Outside of that, I doubt he has a clue about what’s in it. It was just all about winning. Period. When the next Dem President comes in, the Republicans will blame him/her and the Dems on this increased deficit and any problems coming out of this bill. It’s what they do.

I am so torn about this.

I have a premed University of Hawaii student shadowing me this summer. Poorish family. If he doesn’t get into Burns in Honolulu and is forced to pay oos tuition somewhere he’s essentially fucked out of his dream and stuck with a useless bio degree due to this cap. I probably wouldnt say it to him but probably a blessing in disguise based on where healthcare is going.

My oldest is a rising senior and looking at law schools, so I have looked into this a bit.my understanding is the cap is on federal student loans. You can borrow the remainder of the cost of tuition, books, and living expenses (I’m assuming that is calculated by the school) using private student loans. They can actually have lower interest rates than federal loans if you are willing to cosign and have good credit, or if the student has established credit worthiness. It definitely sucks, but in my opinion in the Pell grant changesucks worse.

And you think private loans won’t increase rates? Lol

I don’t understand your point. I was clarifying that there is not a hard $50,000 per year cap on financing grad school. I’m not making an argument that this is as good or better than what we had before just that you can still finance 100% of your graduate or professional school costs

Predatory loans will be the new norm (again). They have the blue collar workers and immigrants lined up to be slave labor, now this puts white collar jobs as debt slaves. It’s all in project 2025.

Yes I was able to follow that part. What is "fake flooding" supposed to be, in upside down world? Fake water? Fake deaths?
