It is very depressing to see the ensouled and virtuous warhorse, even if Russian, destroyed by the sterile and anodyne FPV drone. Like the flower of French nobility falling to arrows loosed by coarse English yeomen at Avignon.

One more reason to despise the Kremlin.

Fuck the French nobility, but that horse shit is cruel, evil even.

A reminder that at Agincourt (my bad on Avignon), the English were shooting arrows at French people in France, which they had invaded.

Is there anything more obsolete in modern warfare than a battleship?

2 hours ago, TwiceHorn said:

Yeah, the need for anything bigger than a DDG is highly questionable.  The Ticonderoga class CG, now obsolescent, was originally considered a DDG and is to be replaced by more Burkes.

Cruiser-class replacements have been canceled twice.

Anybody within range of those large guns can probably send quite a few cheap aerial drones at that ship, not to mention the cheap sea drones that are coming online.

Trump has the soul of a mentally defective European autocrat elevated beyond his competence. Fredrick William of Prussia tried to get really tall soldiers from all over Europe and breed them with tall women to make a giant army. Someone should suggest this to distract DJT from defense procurement.

Not sure which thread is the best for this, but this is un-fucking-real. Not only did this dipshit MAGA girl, who clearly wrote a god awful paper that the world got to see, get her grade changed the TA also was relieved of her teaching duties. I legitimately thought even OU would do better than this.

I love how in all of the battle scenes, every weapons systems is firing.   Missiles are launching, guns are blasting and lasers are lasering.  Because that would totally happen.

This fucking Trump class ship will never get built.

Yeah, the OSINT folks who focus on naval matters are saying there’s no facilities to really start building them unless they bump existing orders that are already paid for, authorized, scheduled, etc.  it would be a massive disruption for the shipbuilders.

I love that a fucking draft dodger, whose family never bothered to serve, wants a class of ships named after himself.

Knights and royals Normans, the Welsh Celts, and the English Anglo-Saxons. Roughly, by 1415 there had been a lot of jumbling. It was like 1000 years between the initial Anglo-Saxon settlement and Agincourt.

Also when the Kennedy center renaming posts were happening, I meant to foretell that the next naval ship off the mine would be renamed to the Trump, but I don’t think I ever made the post and then he went and one upped me with an entire class of unnecessary ships.

so I’ll get out ahead of this and say the new commanders stadium will have to be trump stadium.

Fuck the stadium name. The team will be the Orangeskins.

Sometimes I wish I could find an interest in European history outside of my dad’s home country, but I always conclude it’s not worth the effort so I stick with learning about Pacific Peoples instead. Far more interesting to me at least and these people got along with each other better most of the time and thrived in some of the most remote places on the planet until white people showed up.

Got along with each other?  Man, you might want to touch up on your pre European Māori history.

They could get their fucking war on. If you were drafting an army from scratch, they are potential #1 picks.

I am aware of their history and when they fought it didn’t go on continuously like Europe because kings and queens treated war like a sport all the way into the 20th Century. The Pacific Peoples are more interesting and still treated each other better than the people that populated Europe, even in war footing time. The only thing they don’t have that the barbarians in Europe do is an extensive written history noting all the wars they fought on that continent.

I assume th creation of a Trump battleship is only to humor him. The navy spends a few buck to produce a desktop model so Trump can show it off to every visitor along with the future AF1. “And this is where all the missiles shoot out of the front.”

That is because they were on islands (a long way away from each other) and to your last point, sustained and large-scale war requires a certain level of technology and bureaucracy to include writing. As far as treating each other better, it’s a matter of perspective. Europeans generally did not eat people they defeated on the battlefield.

I’m pretty sure Guns, Germs, and Steel has an entire chapter about Polynesians, and the Māori in particular, engaging in genocidal conquest. It’s part of his hypothesis that conquest isn’t genetic, it’s a product of resource allocations and culture.

It’s been a long time since I read that book. I have no doubt. I don’t dispute that pre-contact Polynesians likely did not do things like raise an army and place it in the field for a long campaign and sustain it with taxation and loans raised from other pre-contact tribes. There was for sure conquest and likely genocidal conquest.

Post-contact, there was that time that a group of Māori hijacked British ships, forced the crew to sail to an island occupied by a non-violent tribe, and them used firearms to invade, enslave: and then genocide said non-violent tribe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moriori_genocide

Quote

In 1835, with the forced assistance of the crew, several hundred Māori, mostly of Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama at Port Nicholson, sailed to the Chatham Islands aboard the brig whaler Lord Rodney in two sailings. The hijacked[8] ship carried 500 people on the first sailing, which arrived on 19 November 1835. The second sailing arrived on 5 December 1835.[9]With the arrival of the second group "parties of warriors armed with muskets, clubs and tomahawks, led by their chiefs, walked through Moriori tribal territories" and "curtly informed the inhabitants that their land had been taken and the Moriori living there were now vassals." When some Moriori argued back, they were killed

Not wrong, but Diamond's point here is more "Showing up and claiming land and killing all the previous inhabitants is not a uniquely European ethos." Also the Maori are some bad ass motherfuckers, and not a group of people I would cross lightly.

As a culinary aside, I always find it funny when folks talk about bringing US/Spicy flavor food to Europeans.  While I totally agree their spice levels are ridiculous weak, you can not feed spiced food to Europeans.  They will more or less literally throw it up. Culturally they don't grow up eating spicy food, and it's something that has to be slowly introduced over time.  You can't just decide to eat actual Thai spicey food.  I mean you CAN.  But I wouldn't recommend it.

Landry is a Grade-A cunt.

If you were going to try to trick persuade people to join your country, I think sending a guy known for slashing social services in a state that is at the bottom of the lists for education, health, quality of life, crime, and income might be a poor choice. But definitely on brand for this administration.
