Emotions of the moment. Luka is not a more beloved figure than Tom Landry.

Tom got shit on. No argument, but the trajectories of their careers upon departure from their Dallas entities are monumentally juxtopposed.

Spurs fan since birth -- okay, like 7 years old -- and so I could give a fuck about the Mavs ultimately.

But factually this trade sucks because I'd MUCH rather have the Mavs be relevant and with a top young superstar than the fucking Lakers of all teams. THE FUCKING LAKERS. You kidding me?

Anyone who rails on the Mavs while the Lakers are the presumed benefactor is morally suspect and probably prefers California burritos to Tex-Mex.

The Lakers had Phil "asterisk" Jackson and Shaq back in the day throwing shade at the Spurs. Total douchebags without even getting into Derek "cry more bitch" Fisher.

Cuban I think talked some Spurs trash at one point, but whatever.

Doncic was/is awesome to watch and Dirk as well.

I've lived in both LA and Dallas. Los Angeles sucks giant ass. I wouldn't live again in Dallas either, but levels of hell and all that.

Yep. Always hated the Lakers/Kobe. Hated. Had respect for Dirk even though it was annoying to lose to them.

I will say, the NBA is kinda winning with this trade. It's super bowl week and all the shows are talking about this.

Spurs have no room to talk. They just had a young All star PG in his prime force his way onto their team and they had to give nothing in return. Sets up nicely for Wemby and some Euro eyeballs.

I get tanking the franchise to move to Vegas but the TX leg thing makes zero sense. Why would the legislature at large, from all over the state, change their minds on a deep seated objection to gambling to save a basketball team? The Addelsons have shown their willingness to spend their mountain of cash directly to influence politics which is way more effective than whether the Dallas Mavericks move cities. That would seemingly be less than a blip on the radar of state level politics and would require support from legislators well beyond the DFW metroplex. I’m not buying that one.

I think that is the point he is making.  He's saying that they applied all of this pressure on the legislature and they didn't move. So the Adelson's only play left was to tank the franchise so that they can demonstrate it needs to move to Vegas. In 2 years, if the legislature does reverse course, then my guess is that by then the Adelson's will move anyway to Vegas. But, they will have a choice at that point.  That is what this guy is saying.

These are all great points if you completely ignore the reality of what Luka and the Mavericks have done the past few seasons.

He’s a bad defender, but he’s not generationally bad, that’s dumb. He has actually been a useful piece on a good NBA defense, last fucking season. After making the trades for Gafford and PJ they were one of the best defenses in the league by every metric down the stretch. You just need the right pieces around him, he’s not an unsolvable liability on that end.

I don’t even want to argue the offensive side of it, mainly because arguing whether Luka’s offensive game is winning basketball or not is weapons grade stupid.

It was just shown on Get Up that he gets blown by more than any defender in the league.   Literally the worst

let me guess.  they used last year's playoffs videos? he was playing on one knee.  daily injections in the knee, bleeding out during the games.  the game plan was for him to divert everyone to the middle where we had gafford, lively, or PJ.  it worked til the finals where boston could play 5 out.

How are they comparable?

Fox wanted to go, and made it known. Kings got something for him before they lose him for sure anyway. The Bulls I'm not sure. Maybe it helps their Sag for Flagg efforts.

The Spurs moves aren't remotely the same as what the Lakers pulled off, with massive help from Nico "I swear I'm not still wearing a Kobe Bryant jersey under this suit" Harrison.

He plays over 35 minutes a game, and he gets hunted relentlessly, both because he’s not a good defender and because it’s good strategy to make him work on defense to make him less effective on offense. It makes sense that his blown by stats are the highest in the league. That does not mean he’s the worst defender in the league.

There are players that are amazing offensive players that can hardly get minutes for their teams because they are such liabilities on defense. Luka isnt that. He’ll never be a great defender, but he’s been part of good nba defenses. With what he can do on the other end of the floor, that is enough.

Over the last two seasons, Doncic has allowed a 44.7% blow-by rate as the primary defender on drives, the highest in the league during that span, per Second Spectrum.

The whole reason they went to that philosophy was because Luka was so bad and the worst part was he didnt even try.

[Goldsberry] The Luka Dončić deal originally included multiple first-round picks, Dalton Knecht, and more, but was chiseled down after Rob Pelinka was able to convince Nico Harrison that taking on Luka Dončić was a big risk due to his weight and injury history.

Taking this trade at face value w/o any implications of the Adelsons having ulterior motives - Nico not only completely misjudged Dallas fans' loyalty to Luka, he did not understand the culture that Dirk and Cuban built. 41.21.1.  Loyalty never fades.  MFFL.  He got none of that.

I watched some of Nico Harrison's PC from yesterday. First time I've seen him speak. Did not get the impression that this guy is some sort of Alpha GM who confidently made this deal. He seemed completely unprepared for reporter questions and lacked any thoughtfulness or understanding of the gravity of the situation.

Condolences to Mavs fans. As a Houston fan, I span from indifference to rooting against Dallas teams (unless playing against LA or NY teams). This trade was so terrible for the Mavs that I actually wish it would get vetoed by the NBA commissioner. Giving the Lakers a young star makes it 10x worse than if they'd sent Luka for pennies to literally anywhere else.

Like what, a title in 2020 because Lebron rescued his career like he did Kyrie? That was now 5 years ago and AD is now 32. The comparison is spot on. Burrow is much better than Dak. Burrow is younger. AD is brittle like Dak.

Yep. And Dak is a good player but Luka is generational.

Obviously this guy has some irons in this fire, but the bit at the end about Lindsey is interesting. [Adding here since twitter is borked: "The only other thing I'll add to this is Dennis Lindsey was with the Mavs last year and is a great basketball mind. He left to work for the Pistons this season. Do with that what you will."]

https://surlyx.com/haralabob/status/1886194519718166730

On a personal note, I've carried my Mavs fandom with me after leaving Texas over a decade ago. I've seen them just about every time they've played at MSG in recent years, and planned to go to the game in March. This trade is an absolute gut punch to caring about this franchise going forward. I'll probably just let my kid pick up a Knicks jersey instead of trying to brain wash him like I do all things Longhorns and Rangers. Monumentally stupid and unforgivable.

Yeah, setting aside anything emotional about the trade, I still haven’t gotten over the fact the Mavs only got one first round pick out of this. Unbelievable level of incompetence.

Not that anyone cares, but I'll give my two cents:

This fucking sucks as a sports fan for multiple reasons. I've seen a lot of my fellow Spurs fans liken this to the Kawhi bullshit, and I've seen it slapped down for reasons that I agree with. If I had to compare it to something I've never felt, it would be akin to the Spurs trading Manu after the 2005 season. Hear me out (Sushi Gloryhole). I'm not comparing their basketball skill. What I would compare is the love that the team's fans have for them respectively and the way they're exalted in the community. I can't think of another player in San Antonio history as beloved as Manu. Tim is/was the rock, but Manu was the heart. I assume that the Dirk/Luka comparison would be comparable here. Luka was overlooked in the draft and fell to the Mavs. He was a prodigy from day one. He's done things on the court that I've never seen an overweight, slow-ass motherfucker do. He's taken everyone in this league to school. He's won and lost in every way imaginable. And, he wanted to be in Dallas. He loved the community, and the community loved him. The Finals run last year was glorious, and when he came back this year you just knew they were gearing up for another run.

I've had my heart ripped out of my chest multiple times. A few of those have been sports-related. 99.9% have been wins and losses. If my team had traded Manu at the height of his popularity and taken away from me the resulting years of his career, the championship runs and the incredibly hurtful losses, I would be beyond furious. This kid was supposed to be there for the long haul, a fixture in the Dallas community after he stopped playing. It doesn't matter if he wasn't the perfect player, he was perfect for the team they had built around him and perfect for the fans that adored him. And now it's gone.

As I was driving home last night, I saw a kid riding his bike wearing a Dirk jersey. You could see the emotion on his face, trying to process what happened. We all get our hearts broken at some point, but it's supposed to happen on the court and field. It's a rude awakening when the business of sports and politics ruins what sports is supposed to be about. What happened Saturday night still has no plausible explanation and it's caused a lot of us to see nefarious conspiracies because they make more sense (and unfortunately might have some truth to them). I'm sorry to all of you who rooted for this team and I hope this works out for you in the long run. You guys deserved better than this.

That comparison is ridiculous, Manu was way better than Luka

In 2006 the Mavs killed our chances for a title in a very close Game 7. The Spurs would likely have had a three peat since they won in 05 and 07.

Gonna disagree here. The 2006 title was decided before those playoffs even started.

Yes but if they get Butler then they can trade him for LeBron!

AD:

  • NBA champion (2020)

  • 10× NBA All-Star (2014202120242025)

  • 4× All-NBA First Team (2015201720182020

  • 3× NBA All-Defensive First Team (201820202024)

Dak:

  • Second-team All-Pro (2023)

  • 3× Pro Bowl (201620182023)

AD was a consensus top 10 player at worst for a decade, and was often considered top 5.  Dak finished 2nd in MVP voting once? AD is on every 100/75/etc of all time list. Is Dak on any top 100 of all time lists?

Saying the comparison is "spot on" because they're the same age is stupid as shit.

Yep. Nothing about AD is generational. Good player? Sure. Can he lead a team to a NBA Finals? Absolutely not. Switch Luka with AD last year and Mavs don't even sniff a Finals. Most likely would be 1 and done or at best, get ran off the court by OKC.
