sorry for all the questions guys but I don’t have TV access now (long story) and I’m not in Texas. I don’t know anything about these Christian camps but it sounds like I should: The kids come from schools like Kinkaid, Memorial, Highland Park, correct? Stewart I know of but I don’t know who went there. I went to Rio Vista as a kid which should be somewhere nearby and some other friends went to Champions and Longhorn if memory serves.

With all that said, I’m a little older so my friends’ kids would more likely be councilors rather than campers. How young were the campers, though? If in the 8 year old range, tI guess grandkids could have been there.

Thanks again for the news. I’m truly out of the loop.

Kinkaid.

CLH has C3. It's become increasingly difficult to get kids into CLH and even aluminum sometimes will park a kid at C3 until a spot opens up at Inks.

Apparently, Indian Springs (a/k/a Ranch Branch to us olds) is the harder one to get into these days because it was renovated most recently.  According to my son, they pay their counselors quite a bit more than they do at Inks.  When I went there, I went to Ranch because the waiting list was too long at Inks.  It was fun for a few years (forty years ago).  But there was a waiting list even back then for the "Main" camp.

But, were those closest to the river, like the Mystic cabin swept away, higher than the 1987 flood?

We may not yet know the details, but there is zero question that some lives were lost due to negligence.

I know you were, and I'm not going to get in the middle of that. I was merely pointing out that the brand spanking new account you were quoting is GRhorn, a guy who has been banned by mods or crowdsourced more times than I can count, likely approaching 50 times now.

Take your own advice then. Good Gravy is obviously Sack or GRU’s 50th username bc they get banned or crowd sourced

I know it’s annoying. I know that message I posted is the same thing, over and over. Yet….its also true.
Shit, the metaphor works well in this thread. Sorry not sorry I keep shouting about the wall of water headed our way. Maybe if we’d fucking do something about it, and not double down on our current path, I wouldn’t have to say anything else.
But it genuinely pisses me off when everyone tries to sell the “this is Texas, we love and help each other!” lie when those same people celebrate tossing a huge percentage of this state’s population, the people who build your homes, prepare your food, to the ground in cuffs, shove them in camps, all that shit. I’d love it if we meant what we said and practiced what we preached. And I’m sorry if it upsets you to be reminded that we don’t. But I’ll never be silent in the face of this shit. It would be evil for me to do so.
Care for every human in this state as much as you care for each of those little girls, that’s all I ask. Yet, it’s clearly too much to ask.

So you know a lot of churches. Help me help them?

Looks like they are trying to remedy that with a $500 application fee.

Dead because they have their bodies and are awaiting ID from family

or just presumed dead because of how long it's been and their diminished chances for survival?

They could pay me $500, and the final bill would be too rich for my blood.  My kids went to some smaller camps close by and had some fun times.  My older son finally got to go to Longhorn . . . as a counselor.  Better to make them pay you . . . and they don't pay a lot.

Maybe I was not clear, but this misses the point.  Highest all time refers to the high point.  What about the lower elevations that HAVE flooded in the past.  How many of those killed were at those lower elevations, and were not killed by historic flood levels?  Simply saying this was unprecedented is a cop out.

From the Austin Firefighters Association:

Spoiler

It brings the Austin Firefighters no pleasure to report to the community that the Austin Fire Chief DENIED the deployment of Austin firefighters to Kerrville until very late into the event (so today!), with the exception of only 3 AFD rescue swimmers who helped staff helo teams (which still were NOT deployed until the afternoon of the 4th).

The Austin Firefighter Special Operations teams are specially trained for Hill Country swift water rescue and are some of the best, if not the best, swift water boat teams in the State of Texas.

It is absolutely outrageous that the Austin Fire Chief, Joel G. Baker, would not allow highly trained firefighters from Austin to respond to Kerrville. Because of this egregious dereliction of duty, LIVES WERE VERY LIKELY LOST BECAUSE OF CHIEF BAKER’S DECISION!

Deployment orders came down from the State of Texas on July 2. We would've been pre-deployed before the waters even began to rise!

It is unforgivable that a fire chief would NOT allow his firefighters to answer the call to save lives.

Why would Fire Chief Joel G. Baker do this, you may ask? It was a misguided attempt to save money. I say “misguided” because the fire department is fully reimbursed by the state to deploy. I explained the reimbursement process to Chief Baker last week, and he failed to understand this very simple concept.

We are disgusted with our fire chief. He needs to be held accountable and fired for his disgraceful dereliction of duty.

The Austin Firefighters are starting a vote of no confidence on Tuesday on the fire chief.

As disgusted as we are at our Austin Fire Department leadership, the Austin Firefighters Association made a decision to not air our dirty laundry while victims and bodies were still being recovered. But it's now July 7, and it's time that we hold accountable our disgraced fire chief, AND anybody else in his leadership circle who are responsible for this horrendous act.

The Austin Firefighters commit to being transparent to the community about this process to remove our fire chief and hold all of those accountable who were part of this atrocity.

The firefighters hope we have your support, because it's going to get ugly.

I can't possibly express to you how outraged and sickened the firefighters are that we were not allowed to do the job—the job that we have trained so hard and long to do—during the historic floods that just occurred in Kerrville. We could've made a difference, and we were forced to stand down and lives were lost.

The community deserves a fire chief who cares about the community as much as our firefighters, and that is simply not the case. Joel G. Baker must go!

Maybe…but…it may also have been a smart move keeping local resources local, when the forecast indicated we may need them around here (and indeed we did - multiple rescues and people lost locally). I’d wait to hear more about this story to figure out what really happened.

That seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don't. There was a threat of Austin flooding. If the water rescue teams were in Hunt/Kerrville, and Austin flooded needing water rescues, I'm sure people would've bitched that he sent AFD resources elsewhere.

That link was just for donations. Im trying to find a contact at a church or place in the Austin area where a trailer can be parked and efforts can organized for actual materials to collect and be driven. The primary HQ is in Kentucky. Hoping to find a local person.

Right now is the time to organize the materials I put in the help thread. They will need them terribly this coming weekend or sooner if possible.

People, goods and organization.

If someone will provide a contact at a church and someone with a trailer I'll reach out.

Feel free to post my list of needs wherever you think will get the best results.

We can complain about the politics later, people action and effort is what's needed right now.

Yeah, I misunderstood your question, likely my fault for not reading as closely as I should've. No idea on whether those low-lying cabins had flooded in '87 or any other time previously. Personally, I believe there was serious negligence on the part of the camp in keeping the little kids in those cabins closest to the river, regardless of the historic nature of the flood. I also blame the city, county, and state for not having an early warning system upstream and/or sirens in populated areas.

It's hard to keep up, but I think there still is a missing counselor, Katherine Ferruzo, age 19.  Chloe is the one from Kinkaid (headed to UT), who was confirmed dead.  Katherine, also was an incoming UT freshman, who graduated from Memorial.  They were counselors in the same cabin, it appears.

edit.  I added her name.  It's in the news at this point.

I keep catching blurbs like this that indicate there was knowledge before hand of an impending catastrophic event. If the concern was great enough to stage swift water rescue teams in the hill country two days before the actual floods, what the fuck were campers doing near the water. In the shitshow press conference with Noem a couple of days ago when they were all congratulating each other on how awesome their efforts were, they also mentioned assets staged in the area prior to the actual floods in anticipation of something happening. I get the feeling the post mortem will be ugly in that regard.

The assumption that there will be an honest and complete examination of these events is very optimistic, in my opinion.  I expect another "It could have been worse."

I have no doubt that will be the playbook, as was obvious watching the Sat evening CYA clusterfuck of a press conference. But from my understanding learning about the makeup of these camps, there are a lot of well to do people  whose kids either lost their lives or were exposed to the very real possibility of losing their lives. Perhaps a couple of them with means to do so, will see that the truth is exposed. Its a different class of victims than Uvalde. Wishful thinking perhaps.
