Had a chance to check this film out last night. I wanted to let it linger before I spoke on it. I don’t think I enjoyed it most of the first act, I had all these preconceived notions on what I thought the film would be or maybe how it should be. I was trying to view it from the lens of past Superman films. When I let that stuff go and just observed, it was a cool experience.
It’s truly unique. It’s not really comparable to any other comicbook film. You’re just dropped into this world going 100mph the entire time. I think it could have used an additional 10-15 minutes, there were powerful moments that almost felt superficial. The characters were also so good that you want to spend more time with them. It’s a James Gunn film, but definitely peeled back. It’s so diverse in tone, you could imagine any character existing in this world, you’ll see examples of that in the film.
I could see some people hating this movie. It’s chaotic, ridiculous, and hilarious at times. I’ll get into some pros and cons once the movie actually drops. I think I want to see it again. If you’re a fan of DC, I think you’ll find many things in this film redeeming. I think this is the Batman Begins to a potential Dark Knight. Solid start. This a Superman you can build around, even if his solo film doesn’t hit for everyone.

Funny, I had this same complaint with Guardians of the Galaxy 3-it would have played better giving a few of the scenes just a beat or two more to breath.

Reviews are spectacular.

My personal concern is that I haven’t really been a huge fan of any of Gunn’s previous movies. But I’m seeing it Saturday and pumped.

Superman the character is in a weird spot, because it was perfected the first time they tried back in 1978.

Well, we are getting Guy Gardner's Green Lantern right out of the 1980s in this film, so we've already got that example front and center in the trailers.

Your comment almost makes me think of the Brave and the Bold series (before it was Batman-centric).

I would love for Gunn to dip into other eras and pull some of those characters out and into this one for future films.  Gunn seems to have the ability to pick a variety of characters to work with and get us away from the same old same old.

Spoiler

Kind of like how Marvel is dipping into the 1960s Fantastic Four and pulling them into the 2025 MCU.

Just got home from the Alamo. This was great. If this is the direction the DC is going, it’s really the Guardians of the Galaxy universe and I’m all in. The cast was perfect. Mr Terrific stole show for me.

My only complaint is they didn’t release those Brosnahan titties.

Going on Saturday night with my friend who we've seen most of the other comic nerd movies together. I'm hopeful. I think Superman is the type of thing we need right now. Superman will always be a sentimental favorite since it was the first one of these I grew up on with Christopher Reeve. I hope Gunn can pull it off. His track record is pretty solid.

I'd spin the world backwards to ensure those things don't perish.

Saw it last night. Really great. The casting of the new Superman was an excellent choice.

My movie experience was horrible. I went to a Regal cinema for the first time since whenever, and it sucked for two reasons. First, instead of the 10-minutes or so of previews you get at Alamo, we had a 6:00 show time, and sat through over 30 minutes of previews AND commercials before the movie started.

Second, we saw it in 4DX. I thought it might be cool, but it was waaaaaaay overdone. Our seats were tilting and shaking throughout 80% of the movie, usually in a way that wasn’t even synced to the action in the movie. Seats just shaking for fuck’s sake. Even my kids, who love a good amusement park ride, didn’t enjoy that.

Fuck Regal.

As a kid I never liked the Superman movies. I was talking to my mom this evening about this and she never realized I didn't enjoy them because I never said anything. I really, really enjoyed this one though. Krypto was awesome. Having a Superdog made the movie for me. I had zero expectations going in, but I left the movie smiling. It seems like the goal of the movie was to show someone doing good deeds for no other reason than because they want to and that is who they are. I loved that aspect and can't wait for the next Superman movie.

I have to use Regal out here because there is no alternative like AMC or Alamo for movies. The 30 minutes of previews are standard for them. I always show up around 25 minutes into the previews. This is definitely a movie I would NOT want to see in 4DX. I really like that kind of film, but not this one because I figured it would be a ton of seat shaking. I just watched it in RPX and it was fine. I just got in from this one and I still feel really good about having seen it. Some good life lessons in the film for anyone paying attention to things like that.
