I think DJ Campbell has turned a mental corner. He will be an elite player in 2025.

This really really really needs to happen.  If not, we are going to have issues on the line.

It’s kind of crazy for this OTF poster to think we’re going to increase that percentage next year. Barron and Mukuba were a big part of that. Paul Waddlington pointed out that Guilbeau and Muhammad have combined for 1 turnover in their careers. Turnovers on both sides of the ball for us will probably go down next year.

I really like Noah Thomas for one reason: he's the ultimate counter-point to all the UGA bitching about Atkinson and Terry

Consider the following:

UGA fans: it's not fair for Texas to come into Georgia with an unfair offer for guys we've been recruiting since 8th grade.

UT fans: OK, well, what about Noah Thomas? He's a 6'6" athletic freak from League City/HTX area who ran a sub-11 second 100 meter dash and could be huge for UT (and those other dorks up 290 or whatever - but who cares about them? IRRELEVANT) in the red zone? And UGA bought him out from under both hometown teams who wanted him and who had a relationship with him dating back years. In fact, UGA swooped in with the biggest offer to steal the kid from 2 hometown teams. How is that different from whatever you ALLEGE happened with Atkinson and Terry (a version of events that I very much doubt is reflected in reality)?

UGA fans:

069c616d-0a21-4e7b-828f-f7d29e202aff_tex

In sum, hypocritical bulldogs can get fucked and I look forward to taking many, many top prospects out of Georgia in the coming years

I dont think he is an athletic freak. I dont see him running the 100m in HS. I see his 23.73 senior record in the 200m as senior and 47.84 400m personal record. Different races, but those are not implying he is a burner. His strength is his length. That said if he can just catch the ball consistently, which he can, he will upgrade the Georgia WR room. They led the nation in drops last year.

Anybody else slightly concerned about DT? We've gotten very spoiled there the last three years. I know there are a lot of new bodies and highly rated transfers to throw at the position and the future looks really bright, but I can't imagine we won't see a little step back there. The only guy we've actually seen play is January, and he's a true sophomore.

Its hard to expect production that we have seen the last 2 years, but I do not see it as an issue. Cuse guy has real upside. Purdue (Brevard) guy seems like someone that can anchor at the LOS, not going to give you much pass rush. It is also very deep. I think it has an above conference average floor and if Maraad Watson (Freshmen AA at Cuse last year) and/or January break out as disruptors it has a chance to be a real strength of the defense.

Agreed here, but Taaffe and McDonald have shown ball hawk tendencies. Maybe Derek Williams too.
I’m not a Guilbeau believer, but the coaches seem to be so we’ll see.

Cant have two corners (Muhammad & Guilbeau) who lack make up speed on the field at the same time.

We’re unlikely to increase that percentage because our opponents will likely be improved.  Our defense was off to a great start last year and Mukuba was a rotational piece until Williams went down.  Barron was tremendous and a bit unique in what he brought to the table. You reference turnovers.  Mukuba had 1 career pick heading into last year.  Two of his last year were deflected balls (one created by Manny).  One was a 3rd and 30 with less than a minute to go.  He was playing the deep safety.  That can be replicated.  Williams is quite capable.  If we crank up the pressure, we’ll create turnovers.  The best QB we played in the regular season was Beck, and he wasn’t necessarily wanted back so that should tell you something.

You're probably right, but it's possible he just doesn't have the ability to maintain in the 200/400.  My kid was 11.2/23.5 which hints that sub-11/23.7 is not likely.

None of that really changes the original point being made; i.e., Texas and Georgia are gonna slug it out for players in each others' state.

The pressure from the DEs, OLBs and Hill has a chance to be elite. If that’s the case, it’s going to make the DTs look really good since only so many guys can be double-teamed or a focal point in protection.

Beyond that, as Codaxx pointed out, there is legit talent within the DT room and a lot of it will be here for more than 2025. People discount January, but the staff thinks he’s a difference maker and is a likely starter. I am not really sure why we’re not excited about him. He checks a lot of boxes. Watson is supposed to be a stud. The other guys aren’t chopped liver and they’re likely to be able to redshirt the freshmen, if they want to do so.

Scipio also pointed out the important aspect of turnovers being somewhat random as well. Yes, there are ball hawks. There are also roles that get more chances and Star is one of those. An elite pass rush will also translate into picks. It wasn’t like Mukuba was a turnover force at Clemson. I think expecting turnovers to be on par with 2024 on the defensive is reasonable. Either this is going to be an elite defense starting multiple All Americans or what the fuck are we expecting?

All the experts from around the country anticipate our defense to be better in 2025 than 2024, that is crazy.

Maraad watson was a Freshman All-American. No freshman DT in the country played more snaps than him. When Syracuse beat Miami, he had 6 tackles from the interior of the D-line. If he isn't a difference-maker, it will be a surprise.

That’s what we said last year. Collins and Broughton balled out… but the depth and versatility we have will be suffocating to teams.

Mukuba and Barron were ballhawks yes but also big hitters and helped in run support on occasion. Manny and Guilbeau are finesse players and need to be more physical. Getting Derek Williams back will help and McDonald should be fine at Nickel.

I fully expect the defense to be elite and have never said otherwise. I opted for brevity in my post above but I can go into detail.

I don’t think we’ll force as many turnovers. 22 INTs last year was the most we’ve had in 15 years (side note: 25 in 14 games in 2009 is absurd). We had 16 twice since then with a typical number being 10-15 (more games now means a slight uptick in expected number of course). Taaffe is the only DB that has shown similar to instincts to Barron and Mukuba, which can be developed but is also something that will often show immediately in the elite guys (like Barron in 2022).

Beyond our personnel, this defense could also be worse statistically without an actual drop in quality due to the step up in QB play we’re likely to see this year. And I don’t mean that to take away anything from last year’s defense. They were awesome. I can’t stress enough that this is not a ‘they ain’t played nobody’ post. We just might not get the same gifts from Sayin and Lagway that we got from literal walk-ons a year ago.

Of course there are reasons for optimism. Atticus mentioned McDonald and Williams. I really like both of them. Williams particularly seems like a guy that creates turnovers, including fumbles. I still remember Sark talking him up as a future first rounder in his ‘23 signing day press conference and he’s been great when he’s played. I’d add Hill and Lefau in there as well. Jaylan Ford led the team in INTs in 2022 because he was so good at pass drops. Hill and Lefau had 1 each last year and could easily combine for a couple more due to continued improvements in drops (Hill) and increased playing time (Lefau).

Point is, we’re going to develop guys and have an awesome defense but I’m expecting the INT number to drop a bit towards the 1/game number, which is still good.

And to the other end of the turnover and field position discussion, our defense stands to benefit from fewer short fields due to our own turnovers, missed field goals, and blocked/fake punts. It was pretty incredible how well the defense held up when put into bad situations last year.

How many strip sacks/forced fumbles can Simmons create on his own with a year of development and additional snaps?

He was credited with 3 forced fumbles (and a pick) last season. Not sure how many of those FF ended up as turnovers. At least one didn’t just because of a bad bounce:

I expect the 2025 defense to be better for a few reasons.

1) The offense isn’t going to constantly pull a disappearing act and run through a second half streak of turnovers and 3 and outs. The Arizona State game is a classic example of an offense fatiguing its own defense and almost costing the team the ball game.

2) Elite pass rush. Texas can send ballers in waves from the edge or the second level. I am comfortable expecting Hill and Simmons to remain elite and that will enable the entire front to feast.

3) Elite talent on every level. Simmons, Watson, Hill on the front 7. Muhammad and Taaffe behind that. That’s to say nothing of the other guys also being highly regarded for the most part. Where is an actual weakness that isn’t just handwringing? Like I said, if we have all of this stud talent and experience all over the field then it’s either a top 3 defense that puts the fear of God in opposing offenses or what the fuck are we doing here?

Your number 2 is the key to the overall premise.  I’m not sure statistically it’ll be better, but I think the havoc factor could be improved.  It’s not just Hill and Simmons but Moore and Burke should be improved.  Many a cover guy hit their stride in year 3 - that’s Manny and to an extent Guilbeau. If healthy, Williams is primed for a great year. A previously referenced I’m curious about January.  If each DT can just be above average at one aspect of their game, we’ll be just fine there.

Secondary communication is the biggest unknown. Losing Mkuba and Barron is a big blow. Last year we never seemed to have busted coverages. If the back end holds up I think we are a more complete defense.

You are going to have Taffee making the calls during the season. Saw a report that they are muzzling him for fall camp, so the others can make the calls. I am not sure how the other safety is going to work out with Wiliams and McDonald, but both have had quality time on the field. Given McDdonald has reportedly gotten time at Star, he may be the guy that bounces around (both safety spots and star). If that happens, I could see him as the match-up chess piece. Run heavy team and McDonald starts at star with Williams at Safety. Just an aside, those 2 are bring the wood in the run game. I think McDonald missed something like 1 tackle last year, that is ridiculous. I am hoping Black wins the other CB, but if not, Texas will not have a single player without real game experience. The one concern I have is Texas doesnt have a true #1 Cb on the team, but that will get answered quickly vs OSU

One of the knocks on his scouting report is he lacks burst. He is 6'6" so that stride will make up ground later. That makes sense given he didnt run the 100m in HS, 200m is not very good, and the 400m is solid. More of a possession/jump ball guy, than an explosive WR. Again, that is something Georgia needed. I just dont see that profile as a 1st round potential guy. Perhaps my read on him is wrong, we will find out.

People keep bringing up the better QB play Texas will face this year and that is true. BUT, Texas didn't face a couple of expected QB's last year due to injury and there's likely to be another one or two this year. That's just college FB. It's just a crap shoot on who it will be.

Personally I'd like Hill and Simmons to knock Pavia's head off after the Texas got lucky comments last year.

This may be asking for too much, but I am dying to see what a healthy Vasek looks like for a full season. He was very disruptive in his snaps last year, albeit a small sample size. I think Babers said he had the highest pressure rate on the defense. That is a very talented and competitive room, not sure if both Justus and Lance will be a meaningful part of the rotation. Keep in mind it sounds like Spence and Hill will have packages where they are on the Edge.

That may be a bad idea if Baker looks good. We need Baker engaged. So I think I would move him inside and on the left if he really has already positioned himself into a starting role.

IT note. Good lord we're loaded at edge. And LB.

IT has reported junior transfer Brad Spence from Arkansas was working with the Edges this summer but we did not say it was a full time move. Now, we've learned that it is a full time move.

Interesting, and it tells us that Trey Moore is going to get his share of snaps playing off-ball linebacker. We can deduce that because there's no way they'd feel comfortable with a room consisting of Anthony Hill, Liona Lefau, a still-young Tyanthony Smith, and true freshman Elijah Barnes. They love Smith, but he hasn't played much. That will change over time this season. Barnes is coming along but that's a difficult position for a true freshman to play.

PK mentioned today that Zina U. was at Jack. That pinged my radar because he's too good to be a third-teamer. Spence at Buck full time offered clarity on that.

Spence is a natural pass rusher who played defensive end in high school. He'll be good for Texas at Buck. Colin might spell his last name with the 'S' from Superman but he'll still need a breather from time to time.

Worrying about DT going into the season and then having a couple guys turn into monsters is now a tradition. Ojomo was undersized and Coburn had some... conditioning concerns. Then they went off. Murphy was expected to be a stud, but Sweat tried to eat himself to death. They were the two best DTs in football. Collins was a good third guy who hadn't played up to his potential and Broughton was a decent rotation guy. Then they made a jump. I don't know who, but 2-4 guys will start playing out of their minds.

This is where my head is and with it I expect we don't see a big, if any, drop-off in TOs.

Talent at all levels on defense creates havoc on the field, which forces mistakes.

I hope our DLs and LBs spend some time on ball-catching. They dropped too many potential picks last year.

Pavia reminds me of a couple of vatos locos I grew up playing ball with in all 3 major sports. I love that dude. He truly has leadership magic. That said, sure, I hope Texas beats his ass by 50.

No clue if it will happen or not but the 9.95 “look out for Nick Brooks at RT” chatter is picking up. As far as position battles that and second corner opposite MM are pretty much it. Well, and the obvious “Can Wingo push Livingstone?”.

I assume LG is going to be a thing too, right?

This may be asking for too much, but I am dying to see what a healthy Vasek looks like for a full season. He was very disruptive in his snaps last year, albeit a small sample size. I think Babers said he had the highest pressure rate on the defense. That is a very talented and competitive room, not sure if both Justus and Lance will be a meaningful part of the rotation. Keep in mind it sounds like Spence and Hill will have packages where they are on the Edge.

Folks, we’re in deep shit here. Even Codaxx is drinking the koolaid.
