Texas Football 2025 Fall Camp - Kicking the Sonofabitch In

— How healthy is the offensive line room on the Forty Acres? The No. 3 line on Wednesday (Nick Brooks at left tackle, Devin Coleman at left guard, Cruz at center, Stroh at right guard and Jordan Coleman at right tackle) looked better on the hoof than some first-team Texas lines I’ve seen during my years following the program.

Because they are big?

Any Gaskamp candidates this year? That seems like a thing of the past. If Hutson has a really good year does that count?

I made a post about this in the 2024 gaskamp thread. The only candidates to me are Neto, Conner Robertson, and Will Stone.

I think Burke, Guilbeau, and Campbell are the only other guys from the 2022 class still on the roster and none of them qualify for the Gaskamp.

That 22 class busted super hard outside of the OL. Part of the reason we’re such a young team this year (in addition to elevating the talent since, transfers both ways, etc). The OL haul will always be great though.

I’ll start with what was ultra-obvious to me on the first day:

Texas is an extremely talented squad. Extremely.

Yes, that was expected.

But I’m not sure even folks who have been watching Texas this long understand just how rare this is.

Everywhere you look on the practice field, it feels like there’s a player who is almost assuredly going to be playing pro football one day.

If there are three players gathered together, at least one is a future NFL pick and, odds are, two will be.

I sat there and watched Cole Brevard, Maraad Watson and Josiah Sharma in a three-man drill yesterday. All of them are pro-caliber prospects, each are at different stages of their college careers.

You venture over to look at the offensive line and two of the players you immediately notice are true freshmen Nick Brooks and Jackson Christian.

It’s the same at every position..

Texas is absolutely loaded.

After one day of practice, I’m more convinced than ever that the biggest key for this season will simply be for a relatively young team to execute at a level that matches the team’s talent. If they match their talent level, there’s no telling where this team could go.

**

This next statement may take some by surprise but I’m going to go ahead and put it out there.

From top to bottom, this is the most talented freshman class I’ve ever seen at Texas.

I’ve been doing this 30+ years. I’ve seen them all, so I don’t make this statement lightly.

Now, I don’t know if there’s a Vince Young in the class per se, but the depth of this class is just on another level. This group reminds me of what we would see at LSU, Alabama or Georgia during their heydays.

They’re big, strong, fast, athletic.

Let’s see if their play and dedication to their craft over time matches up. They have to go out and prove they are more than merely talented.

But the talent itself, this freshman group absolutely oozes it.

**

Sark revealed something at yesterday afternoon’s post-practice press conference that I found astonishing.

Who was the player who led the team on Tuesday night in a discussion?

Arch Manning? Anthony Hill? Michael Taaffe?

No. According to Sark, it was CJ Baxter.

Baxter, despite his injury which Sark says has him at about “80-percent” right now, is a team leader.

That speaks volumes about the young man. Injury or not, he’s a leader and a great teammate.

We're either going to be celebrating a CFP Championship at the end of the season, or extremely disappointed. The way OTF is writing thus far, there is no in between.

That's a lot of words from Bobby to say "Show me a loss".

Depth at every level on D appears to be insane.

enhanced physicality from the OL would be significant

I’m not expecting anything from Baxter until late in the season if at all. Gerry is basically suggesting that he is still working back to moving around smoothly much less playing college football at an elite level.

I have no idea who will emerge at WR as the top guys but someone will given the numbers and opportunity.

I wonder what Gerry is basing this on - talking with people or watching. The reason I ask is that some of Baxter’s issues are probably more due to practicing with a large brace and just getting use to the field and competition again and getting comfortable with his knee. Who knows how much is due to physical limitations.

Dude almost blew out all 3 major ligaments in his knee. Thankfully only two of them needed surgery.

Sharma was the biggest and quickest in that clip.  He’s too big and fast to keep on the bench.  He’ll be getting quality snaps by the end of the year pushing for the starting job.

Noticed that. Looked like Watson was right there as well.

If Baxter is still so far away from playing, as in missing the tOSU game as people keep suggesting, then why was he even dressed out yesterday, much less a full participant? 30 days before the opener.

I'm not saying he'll get 15 carries in Columbus, but let's just see how he looks 30 days from now.

All this comment says to me is that "red zone scoring percentage" expressed as a ranking is not a useful metric for evaluating an offense.

Would you rather have Texas' offense from 2021 / 2022, or Texas' offense from 2023 / 2024? I know which one I prefer.

If the data tells you something useful then it's great. If it tells you something you know to be bullshit, then it's just more noise.

It tells you your short yardage game sucks, which is a liability. But it didn't take a genius to know that given most of the girls on the rowing team could bench more than your LG, your QB is made of glass and RB1 weighs 175 lbs.

Gibson got the 1st down versus Clemson.  Asshole refs fucked us.  Taaffe picked us up in the end though.  If Gibson continues on his path then he and Clark can carry the short yardage load until our hammer is ready.

Baxter won’t play meaningful snaps against the couch burners.

Keep him on the shelf until October 4 against Florida.

Street clothes is fine with me in Columbus.  The game matters a LOT, but not at the expense of him gone for the entire year.

In helmet and shorts. Let’s see how much he does when the pads go on.

I’ll say we’ll be lucky if we get him back by OU

That’s not how it works - he has to walk before he can run: it takes awhile to get comfortable and mentally feel that you are ready. So expect him to work in slowly and increase his carries each week as he feels increasingly ready.

I don't want to see Baxter anywhere near a football field before August of 2027. I also don't want him to leave his house before then, because something bad might happen to him. Can't risk it.

Let's just see how he looks a month from now.

RE: Baxter I think we’ll be fine. He’d be nice to have against fOSU and Florida. I hope he’s back by OU, but Gibson probably gives Texas 85% of what Baxter does.

If you believe what Howe said Clark is already ahead of Gibson. I also read he has bigger, stronger legs. Add in he has better lateral movement than Baxter he may be 95% of Baxter can do. He's made a great recovery too.

Because him doing football exercises is just as much a part of his mental recovery and confidence as anything else. He needs to practice on cutting, driving, etc. Do you think that recovery is one day a doctor says "You're 100% now go do everything?" It's a progression. Also, he's in shorts. Lets see what happens when pads come on, and if he's taking contact.

Except that cut job of my quote is NOT what I'm saying. It's what you're saying. You're saying "Lets not have him do anything football related for at least a month" and I'm saying "The staff is probably bringing him along just fine, and I'd be betting he's wearing a green jersey when the pads come on." So we're not saying the same thing at all.

Yeah I'm only saying that before us surly doctors rule him out of the opener, or the month of September, or until Texas/OU, maybe we should see how his knee responds to a month of fall camp.

I think you can say that about the entire RB room. Wisner is the lone known commodity. The rest are options, either based on health or youth. Really need 2 to hit and 1 to hit early. It will probably be a favorite topic for the 9.95s in August. I am prepared for player X is separating, only to see player Y is separating 3 days later.

In the Bobby and Gerry post-practice show, Bobby talked about Josiah Sharma more than any other player.  They probably could have talked for 30 minutes on the DL alone.  Bobby's comp for Sharma was Shaun Rodgers and T'Vondre Sweat, except Sharma is more developed than Sweat and has longer arms (and Gerry mentioned his ankles).

Not really fall camp related, but OSU DT Eddrick Houston just went down in practice with an apparent lower leg injury. Couch pyros already losing their shit as he's arguable the most irreplaceable part of their D.
