SC’s favorite go-to shirt is a burnt orange mesh. Think of Scott Glenn’s character from Urban Cowboy. I think he was wearing a classic mesh while he was beating the shit out of Sissy. That plus cargo shorts and his Hey Dudes and he’s a joy to be seen around.

I also don’t have any statistics to back it up, but just watching last season it feels like we had a lot of forced fumbles that we didn’t recover, more so than usual. I’d be curious if anyone had stats and whether my gut is right or completely wrong.

There are lies...damned lies...and statistics...

Good discussion on the DL for those with the time and inclination. Brief mention of Myron Charles potential from Bobby. Be interesting to see whether he makes his presence felt this season. My thoughts are Texas will, or should be, tough to run against this season, not just for the DL but also with a seasoned tandem of Ant Hill and Leona Lefau in tow. Which may end up testing the secondary more as opponents seek the easier path. OTH, that ridiculous EDGE room along with Ant Hill getting after the QB should also help in that regard.

Only read the first page, but am interested in coaching moves.  Are you saying we hired Alina? For real?  He's gotta be at least 70, which is fine for a head coach, but a position coach is more of a grind job I would think.  And what about the king of bad charma, Gideon? Is he gone yet?

I will never forget the craziness of Gideon.  If he dropped the one he caught, and caught the one he dropped, chances are 90% plus we have two more national championships.   Everybody remembers Tech, but some people forget the BCS game against Alabama, when he did a wonderful job of catching the interception, but it was fourth down.  Drop it dude!

Much like January 1984 with Craig Curry and Jitter Fields,  it will always be too soon.

Our defense is better than the 85 bears. Solid against those guys is first ballot HOF against the rest of our schedule.

I know I'm basically pissing in the ocean here, but the '85 Bears defense kinda sucks as an analogy any time it's used.

The '85 Bears defense's front 7 were obviously amazing, but what really made it dominant was a short-term schematic advantage; most NFL offenses ran play-action, runs setting up deep passes. So the Bears put 8 in the box and blitzed like crazy. Yes, their front 7 was amazing, but their DBs were dubious; the one time they played a team that could throw and throw well, they got punked, and only dodged them in the Super Bowl because the Patriots ran 9,243 times against the Dolphins in the AFC Title Game and the Fins couldn't stop 'em. In 1986, it was Washington gettin' 186 yards on 32 pass attempts -- a huge number of attempts for the time -- that ended Chicago's playoff run in its first game. (Also, in '86, McMahon pulled a Manziel, and pretty much was never good again, which didn't help.)

In other words, I put more stake in NFL offenses being dumb than in the Bears' defense being all that good.

actually now that I think of it the Bears-Dolphins game is a lot like our semifinals loss against Washington but I'd really rather not talk or think about that right now

Texas closed out week one of practice yesterday. They take the day off today and get back at it on Monday.

**

I am told each practice consistently became more and more physical as the week progressed.

Yesterday’s practice included some red zone drills and 11v11 situationals, as well a large amount of seven on seven work.

**

Arch Manning has shown a strong command of the offense. The thought processes and mentality seem to be where the coaches want it.

CJ Baxter and James Simon also received some plaudits for their work yesterday.

**

The defense is said to have had a tremendous night.

One reason is turnovers. At least thus far in camp, the D has easily created turnovers at a higher rate than in the previous two seasons.

One onlooker at yesterday’s practice said Warren Roberson came down with a pair of interceptions, including a leaping grab in the end zone.

**

Ryan Wingo and DJ Campbell were both at practice yesterday but both were limited.

The two players each had a different physical ailment following the first practice. Neither of which is considered to have more than short-term implications.

**

Sark continues to be more animated and has taken his volume to a new level at practice this season. Whether it’s because he has such a talented but young team, or he believes their ceiling is so high, I’m not sure. But it’s something to be aware of because it is a distinct difference year over year to this point of training camp.

**

More as we get it…

That we can now confirm. I had gotten it from one source but @cjvogel also got it from another.

There were a couple of extra curricular activities during the live action between the offense and defense.

Upon the second one occurring, Sark wasn’t playing around anymore.

The staff made the team run gassers during the middle of practice yesterday.

I want to stress this. It is NOT UNCOMMON during a college practice for things to get chippy.

One key Texas training camp takeaway from each position group on offense - Jeff Howe

One key Texas training camp takeaway from each position group on offense

Texas completed its first week of training camp on Saturday.

The Longhorns were on the field exactly four weeks ahead of the season opener against Ohio State before coach Steve Sarkisian gave the team a day off on Sunday.

Combining what I saw during the portions of practice open to the media Wednesday and Thursday with what the OTF staff has heard and reported on from closed sessions Friday and Saturday, there’s one thing on my mind at every position group on the roster.

I’ll start with the position groups on offense.

Quarterback

Whether it’s Matthew Caldwell’s experience, competitive spirit or professionalism that has stood out most doesn’t matter. What matters is that Caldwell has put his best foot forward and is pushing Trey Owens and KJ Lacey for the right to be QB2 behind Arch Manning, which has promoted much-needed competition for the backup quarterback job.

Texas will be a better team if the quarterback who winds up second on the depth chart to Manning earns the job and isn’t the backup by default.

Running Back

Until CJ Baxter is back to 100 percent, the opportunity to share the workload with Quintrevion Wisner could boil down to whether Jerrick Gibson shows better ball security in live situations or Christian Clark can deliver some of what the offense is missing from Jaydon Blue as a receiver.

Even though Sarkisian utilizes the running backs in the passing game as effectively as any play-caller at any level of football, Blue’s production in 2024 (41 receptions for 365 yards and six touchdowns on 58 targets according to Pro Football Focus) will be hard to replace. If Baxter’s health isn’t an issue, and he and Wisner become a true 1-2 punch in the backfield, Clark’s potential to be a weapon in the passing game and give the offense part of the dimension it lost with Blue’s departure to the NFL (something he seems more equipped to do than the other backs) could tip the scales in his favor.

It can’t be overstated how remarkable it is that Clark is in a position for such a role less than a year after suffering a torn Achilles.

Wide Receiver

After what I saw on the practice field, I’m more convinced that the offense’s explosive plays through the air will be the product of the receivers making tough, contested catches down the field, more so than relying on yards after the catch.

Part of the shift is the change from an offense almost entirely predicated on the RPO and a quick, rhythmic passing game with Quinn Ewers at the controls to one that can count on Manning driving the ball down the field on deeper in-breaking routes, deep comebacks, back-shoulder throws, and other long-developing pass plays. The other part is that such a style better suits the personnel in Chris Jackson's room.

DeAndre Moore Jr. and Emmett Mosley can become the kind of reliable targets with a knack for getting open on critical downs for Manning that Lil'Jordan Humphrey and Jordan Whittington were for Sam Ehlinger and Ewers, respectively. Parker Livingstone is a long strider who can take advantage of Manning’s feel for the deep ball by running underneath downfield throws, which could be a reliable part of Sarkisian's Texas offense for the first time in his tenure.

Tight End

What will Sarkisian and Jeff Banks be able to count on earlier: Spencer Shannon’s ability to catch the football or Jordan Washington’s consistency as a blocker?

Assuming Shannon remains the best option as an in-line blocker and Washington can be a threat in the passing game, whichever player develops the other part of their game could determine what the offense’s multiple-tight-end packages look like early in the season.

Sarkisian utilizes 12 personnel (one running back and two tight ends) a lot. Nevertheless, the offense has too much playmaking potential at running back and wide receiver to earmark an excessive number of snaps for a second tight end playing alongside Jack Endries unless warranted.

Offensive Line

When DJ Campbell missed Thursday’s practice, we got a brief look at what the line would look like without him, namely Kyle Flood moving Cole Hutson to right guard and elevating Connor Robertson to first-team center. The flexibility Flood has with guys like Hutson, who can play multiple positions on the interior of the line, and Jaydon Chatman, who has cross-trained at guard and tackle throughout his career, is the kind of manufactured depth Texas needs to win a national championship.

That’s why the concern shouldn’t be replacing four starters from last season, especially since Hutson and Trevor Goosby have varying degrees of starting experience under their belts, while Neto Umeozulu has been waiting years for his opportunity. Instead, with Hutson, Goosby and Umeozulu moving into the starting lineup, the concern should be centered around who will step up and fill the roles they previously held.

That's why it's worth keeping an eye throughout camp on Nate Kibble, since he’s the best candidate early on to be the No. 3 guard. The No. 3 offensive tackle will be either the second-place finisher in the battle between Brandon Baker and Andre Cojoe at right tackle or Nick Brooks.

Chatman’s development as a swing player who can provide depth inside and outside is also worth tracking in the coming weeks.

Horns247 Staff Roundtable: Who has stood out most in the first days of Texas Longhorns' training camp

In this week's Horns247 Staff Roundtable, each member of the Horns247 staff identifies who has stood out most in the first days of the Texas Longhorns' training camp.

Chip Brown2 hrsVIP

The Texas Longhorns are four practices into fall camp and less than 30 days from opening the season at defending national champion Ohio State at 11 am CT on Aug. 30.

After having a chance to watch parts of the Longhorns' first two training camp practices and after getting a chance to talk to head coach Steve Sarkisian, his offensive coordinator/O-line coach Kyle Flood, defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks, as well as all of Texas' position coaches, each member of the  Horns247 staff gives you who has stood out most in the opening days of the Longhorns' training camp.

HANK SOUTH: DB GRACESON LITTLETON

Texas freshman DB Graceson Littleton (29)

Texas signed the No. 1 class in the country for 2025, with much of the fanfare around five-star recruits like Justus Terry, Jonah Williams, Kade Phillips, and others. And while those players deserve plenty of attention, it was Graceson Littleton who emerged as the true freshman with the most buzz coming out of Week 1 of camp.

The Tampa native lined up at nickel with the first-team defense on Day 1, and has drawn plenty of praise from coaches and players alike.

"Graceson Littleton, for us, this guy had a great spring," Sarkisian said after Day 1 of practice this week. "I feel like I talked about him a lot. Maybe not fair to him because I was talking about him too much. But he just comes back and he works.

"He's very savvy. He's smart. He's tough. He works at his craft. Football is the most important thing in his life, and it shows. Came out and had a good day [one of camp]. You can coach him hard. He takes hard coaching. He responds. He tries to get better. So it's a good start for him where he's at."

Jeff Banks didn't hesitate to mention the rising freshman, either, immediately responding with Littleton (as well as tight end Nick Townsend and edge Lance Jackson) when asked about young players who could surprise this season.

Veterans on the Texas roster have taken notice of Littleton as well, including fifth-year senior safety Michael Taaffe and senior cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau.

And with the depth the Longhorns have amassed at the cornerback position, for a true freshman to come in and compete for first-team reps says a lot about what you need to know about Littleton.

We'll see how camp continues to unfold, but he's the player I've been most impressed with through Week 1.

CHIP BROWN: DEFENSIVE TACKLE ROOM

UNC defensive tackle transfer Travis Shaw opened training camp with Texas getting reps with the first-team.

One of the biggest pieces of news coming out of the first few days of training camp was defensive line coach Kenny Baker saying senior North Carolina defensive tackle transfer Travis Shaw has "no restrictions" on the "knee issue" that coaches were monitoring during spring football.

Baker added, "You'll be pleasantly surprised when you see him out there."

True to Baker's word, Shaw was getting reps with the first-team defense on Day 1 of training camp.

"I think today, from my perspective, Travis Shaw had a great day for how big he is," Texas senior defensive end Ethan Burke said Thursday, after the second practice of camp. "He is really explosive and fun to watch and hilarious off the field."

There were more positive indicators about the DT position - one of the team's bigger questions after bringing in five transfers: Shaw, Hero Kanu (Ohio State), Cole Brevard (Purdue), Maraad Watson (Syracuse) and Lavon Johnson (Maryland), who is working through an ankle injury.

We've learned Kanu had a great summer and has emerged as a leader in the defensive tackle room. Kanu got some reps with the No. 1 defense to open camp.

We've learned Watson, a Freshman All-American in 2024 who arrived in June, is in great shape at 6-foot-3 and 327 pounds.

Brevard (6-3, 346) is "a big dude who is hard to move," Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski said. "Between the [defensive tackle] transfers, and [returnee] Alex [January], we feel good about those guys.

"It's hard to say who's going to be the starters. It's going to come down to how they perform in camp. They're all going to play, because I think they've all got the want to, and they're conscientious about the things that are important. They play with good effort, and they care."

Burke said the defensive tackle transfers have fit well into the team's culture.

"I think all the [defensive tackle] transfers we brought in have great personalities, really explosive," Burke said. "I think they want to communicate. They want to be the best. They came here to win a national championship. They're all gas, you know? So it's good to have those guys."

ERIC HENRY: WR PARKER LIVINGSTONE

Redshirt freshman WR Parker Livingstone is looking to build off of an impressive spring and summer.

Two seasons ago, Texas football entered the year with established veterans Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell and Jordan Whittington at the top of the receiver depth chart. Behind the group was a slew of talented underclassmen, including DeAndre Moore Jr., Johntay Cook and Ryan Niblett.

Playing time for the three freshmen was scarce, in part because of the established trust Longhorns' head coach Steve Sarkisian had in his starting trio.

Last season saw an expanded receiver rotation, which included significant playing time for true freshman Ryan Wingo.

Now, entering 2025, the question is whether the receiver rotation will be as tight as the 2023 team – or if there's room for additional contributors as there was in 2024.

If this year's rotation is going to expand beyond Wingo, Moore and Stanford transfer Emmett Mosley V, now would be a good time to buy stock in redshirt freshman Parker Livingstone.

The 6-foot-4, 191-pounder is off to an impressive start to preseason camp, consistently hauling in whatever comes his way and has earned audible praise from Sarkisian and receivers' coach Chris Jackson during media viewing windows.

Livingstone would bring not only another high-caliber athlete to the rotation but also his 6-foot-4 frame gives the group a sizable target to go along with Wingo (6-foot-2), Mosley (6-foot-2) and Moore (6-feet).

In fact, if Livingstone were to somehow crack the starting lineup for the Longhorns, he would be the tallest starting receiver in Sarkisian's 11-year head-coaching career, measuring one inch taller than former Longhorn Casey Cain and former USC Trojan JuJu Smith-Schuster, who both were listed at 6-foot-3.

WILL TURBOFF – DT HERO KANU

Ohio State transfer Hero Kanu (93) emerged as a leader in the Texas DT room over the summer.

Texas had more turnover at interior defensive line than any other position, losing Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton to the NFL Draft, Sydir Mitchell, Aaron Bryant, Jaray Bledsoe, and Tiaoalii Savea to the transfer portal, as well as Bill Norton and Jermayne Lole, who used their fourth and final year of eligibility in 2024.

It's safe to say that there were more than enough opportunities for the Longhorns' five incoming transfers at the position to make their mark since their arrival, and based on his performance and the encouragement from the staff, it appears that Kanu hasn't taken anything for granted.

"The thing I love about Hero is he's very self-aware, he's obsessed with the process," Longhorns defensive line coach Kenny Baker told Horns247. "He's got tremendous leadership qualities and traits. And we've got a lot of guys, but he's kind of taken some of that natural leadership role.

"I think that's just the cloth he's been cut from. He was like that at the last school from what I know. But he's been great. He's coachable, he wants to do well. He asks me all the time: 'Bake, what can I work on? What can I work on?' He loves those things. He came here for a reason — to better himself and win at an elite level."

Per Steve Sarkisian, there has been excitement surrounding the former Ohio State Buckeye's potential on the Forty, which has been affirmed by a jump in Kanu's performance between the spring and this past week's opening of training camp.

Having only played organized football since 2021 when he moved from Germany to California, Kanu gives up around a decade of football experience to most of his Longhorn counterparts, but that clearly hasn't stopped him from stepping up in his first season in Austin.

JORDAN SCRUGGS: RB CHRISTIAN CLARK

RB Christian Clark has returned at full speed less than a year after tearing his Achilles.

I'm rolling with Christian Clark as the Longhorn that stood out the most during the first two practices of fall camp.

The Arizona native has had a remarkable recovery from his Achilles tear that took place just a little under a year ago.

Clark entered fall camp at full steam.

He is also noticeably bigger than he was out of high school, and is now up to 212 pounds after enrolling at Texas around 195 in January of 2024.

A make-you-miss-type of runner, Clark drew comparisons to Bijan Robinson from former Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice, who recruited Clark.

And Clark might be the only back on the roster with that playing style.

I'm incredibly excited to see Clark's skill set in action - with the added weight - once he's in game action. After all, Clark will be the first Longhorn from Arizona to tote the rock in a game since Bijan Robinson rushed for 181 yards against Baylor in 2022.

The physical gains are more than noticeable, and with CJ Baxter still returning from his knee injury, it's not out of the realm of possibilities Clark ends up with a consistent snap count by the end of the season.

Eric Henry is a man after CTJ's own heart.

This puts Clark at the 2nd heaviest RB behind Baxter. I don't agree on him being the only RB able to make people miss. Simon's HUDL tape shows some good shiftiness. He doesn't show the extreme cutting ability that Bijan did (who does?), but he has excellent vision and nimble feet. More of a cut and slash style, he is elusive weaving through traffic.

Have yet to hear anything about the RB's behind Wisner regarding QB protection. With pads coming on next week, maybe we'll start to hear more about it. Some have mentioned wanting to see whether Gibson has overcome his fumbling issues, but he was also a minus protecting the QB last season.

If you want to get super pumped, here are CC's highlights from high school. Junior year. He runs, he blocks, he breaks tackles, he even catches the ball. He's got some Barry Sanders going on. Simon looks even better I hope he gets on the field.

The thing about Sark is, there's always another guy.

He looks way better and quicker than I thought he did. Can also catch the ball real well, that over the shoulder catch 30 yards down the field was impressive on the second highlight.

Our defense is better than the 85 bears. Solid against those guys is first ballot HOF against the rest of our schedule.

But are they better than the 83 horns? That’s the real question.
