I see some Emmitt Smith shiftiness in these highlights... Simon moves extremely well in tight spaces

If you’d rather not hear that dude prattle on while talking over hudl highlights…

Only read the first page, but am interested in coaching moves.  Are you saying we hired Alina? For real?  He's gotta be at least 70, which is fine for a head coach, but a position coach is more of a grind job I would think.  And what about the king of bad charma, Gideon? Is he gone yet?

I will never forget the craziness of Gideon.  If he dropped the one he caught, and caught the one he dropped, chances are 90% plus we have two more national championships.   Everybody remembers Tech, but some people forget the BCS game against Alabama, when he did a wonderful job of catching the interception, but it was fourth down.  Drop it dude!

Much like January 1984 with Craig Curry and Jitter Fields,  it will always be too soon.

No way this is a sober post

Some practice notes from IT

Spoiler

Texas hasn’t made practices open to the media since Thursday, but that doesn’t mean the information stops flowing. Here’s the latest intel from work done over the weekend on the 40 Acres.

DJ Campbell and Ryan Wingo return to practice Monday. In fact, they’re practicing right now.

QB: Arch Manning made good throws in the scrimmage portion of Saturday’s practice. I believe they worked on situations from 25 yards and in. He was picking the right matchups based on coverage. So far, Steve Sarkisian has been impressed with Arch’s command and decision-making.

WR: Emmett Mosley‘s a good, savvy route runner. He’s gotten looks in the slot recently. We’ve been hearing about more pre-snap movement with the receivers. With Wingo out, the receivers were Mosley, DeAndre Moore, and Parker Livingstone.

TE: Jack Endries is the guy. “Catches everything. Smart player.” Endries runs real routes, almost like a WR. “More athletic than Gunnar Helm.” Helm was great but Sark did a lot of the heavy lifting through scheme. Endries can create on his own.

RB: Jerrick Gibson had a good day on Saturday. “James Simon has a great future.” CJ Baxter is obviously not 100% but is ahead of schedule. He’s ahead of where they thought he would be. Tre Wisner is already dinged up; they have him on a pitch count.

OL: “Brandon Baker getting more comfortable by the day.” Coaches are gaining more trust in him. “He can be pretty good this year.” That right there is the best note in this piece.

Edge: Ethan Burke and Colin Simmons are obviously the starters “but Zina Umeozulu has highest motor, he plays hard.” Zina has been at Buck.

DT: Travis Shaw and Hero Kanu still standing out. Hero knows how to win. Sark rates very highly for the player doing what he’s supposed to do and being assignment sound. Justus Terry was at D-tackle on Saturday.

LB: Liona Leafau “has a nose for the ball and is great in coverage. He’s super smart.” In the iron sharpens iron department, “Ant Hill cutting his teeth covering Endries at times.”

Star: Graceson Littleton had a good day at Star but they seem to want a safety there. That would be Michael Taaffe or Jelani McDonald. Or both. Said a source, “whoever the coaches tell to play there will play there.”

Safety: McDonald and Taaffe, then Derek Williams when Taaffe goes to Star. “Taaffe in man hasn’t been an issue. He can cover in the slot. He’s smart and quick.”

CB: “Warren Roberson is playing his best. He’s flat out been good. Playing with better understanding, getting his hands on the ball.” Kobe Black is earning trust by the day. Malik Muhammad is the most consistent.

Zina is at Buck edge? That’s a very crowded room. Simmons, Spence, Vasek, Zina, Jackson, Terry (part time).

Buck: Simmons, Zina, Spence, Orogbo

Jack: Burke, Vasek, Jackson, and assume Terry.

Interesting that is a big ass Buck. He projects to Jack long term. Guessing they are just putting him there to get more snaps.

Could be that he's just the weak side defensive end in four man fronts for short yardage or goal line. Not for base defense.

Very possible, but you could use the DTs that way and PK has done that (play DT at Jack and bump the Jack to Buck). I would guess you will see that this year, given the absurd depth at DT. I usually worry about assignment soundness and play strength, when it comes to freshmen DL. Lot of them have the size, but not necessarily the play strength to line up vs OL that have been in college S&C programs 3-4 years longer. It is early in camp, so I take it all with a grain of salt. Coaches move people around for all types of reasons.

I am thinking we are going to attack opponents offenses from any and every position with our front 7.

I was reminded by someone yesterday that most of the first week is always “install” for the coming season.

That means getting players - all players, not just the first-line units - to understand key aspects of the offense and defense, and doing the things in live action that the coaches have talked about and shown to the players on the proverbial chalkboard for months.

Install is mostly a learning phase of training camp.

But it’s also an opportunity for coaches to see which players can ingest (or have already ingested) the material and put it into practice. That ingestion allows for some freshmen or younger players to a get a head start.

Graceson Littleton is a perfect example.

The freshman from the Tampa-St. Pete area is stacking together multiple positive practices, enough so for one insider to already say, “he’s definitely going to play this year.”

Now, whether that will be as a starter or a key back-up is yet to be determined. But Littleton’s absorption of the team’s defense, along with his athletic ability, showcases the value of being ready the day practice starts.

Even in a somewhat crowded and definitely talented secondary, Littleton will play in 2025. A lot.

Note to myself and everyone else who attempts to rank recruits:

Never underestimate the mental aspect of sport.

**

Outside of his ability to understand what defensive coaches want him to do, Littleton is said to have elite closing speed. When he sees something, he goes.

**

People ask all the time if there’s an underrated player on the Texas defense. I typically respond with Ethan Burke because Burke is overshadowed by Colin Simmons. Or I mention Brad Spence because Spence was so underrated as a portal pick-up.

But, in retrospect, I wonder if the right answer to that question now isn’t Trey Moore. Moore is lining up all over the field in camp, giving the defense multiple looks and variety.

No offense to Burke, who I think will have a fine senior campaign, or Spence, who could be a real factor as a pass rusher, but based on feedback I’ve received, I think Moore is going to be a more integral piece of the puzzle than folks realize.

**

The team gets going in full pads for the first time this morning.

Practice starts right around 9am.

It’ll be the first time the group tackles to the ground and gets truly “physical”.

BREAKING: Andre Cojoe Out for Season with Knee Injury (Monday 12:27 p.m.)

Texas RT Andre Cojoe to Miss 2025 Season

A significant blow to the depth of the offensive line has hit the Texas Longhorns.

Texas right tackle Andre Cojoe will miss the entirety of the 2025 season with a knee injury according to sources.

Texas offensive coordinator and OL coach Kyle Flood stated Cojoe and Brandon Baker would be in competition this fall for the starting right tackle position. This is especially unfortunate considering Cojoe entered fall camp in the best shape of his Texas career.

A very unfortunate situation for Cojoe and we wish him a speedy recovery.

First time ever to be preseason #1 in the Coaches Poll. That is cool shit.

Sucks about Cojoe. There's always a few guys for each team that go down in fall camp, so I've been preparing for a few mentally. Didn't want it to be a potential starter at RT.

So we got lineman and an rb dinged up against air.

Believe today was the first day with pads, so this may have been contact. This might be the scariest time of the year for coaches and fans. You want to have a great and physical camp to prepare for the season, but you also want to get out healthy. There will always be some injuries, you just hope they are not detrimental to the season.

he probably wasn’t going to play this season and now he gets another year to shape his body and probably another year of eligibility if he wants it.  long term depth and a possible starting job down the road in 2027.

I propose we offer to Sark the Surly posters that have the highest put on ignore by other posters count as tackling dummies for the rest of fall camp. Hopefully this can help avoid these kind of injuries plus save whatever sanity exists among this community.

Seriously. How the fuck you get dinged up in shorts

What's the confusion about? They've been hitting, just not tackling to the ground. Athletes get injured playing basketball and they wear shorts

Yeah, season ending injuries are unfortunately an inevitability out of fall camp. Hopefully unlike last season, they aren’t all from the same position group.

We will not be the only school who deals with one or more.  Just part of the sport.

I’m surprised someone hasn’t engineered some kind of knee stabilization apparatus. Not a huge brace contraption, but a kind of sleeve that conforms to the shape of the knee to reduce impact forces. Just enough to deplete the percentage of ligament tears in sports. Is that science fiction?

Somehow, Mia Scott was able to make some of the most athletic plays at third base with a torn ACL. I’m sure medical advances are partially to credit, but also Mia Scott just has that dog in her.

Shorts are the silent killer the medical establishment does not want you to know about.

This one little secret that doctors hate:  wearing long pants at practice instead of shorts.

She also wasn't being engaged by a 300+ pound defensive lineman trying to destroy her
