I don't know about any revamp on the defensive side of the ball, but they did dramatically revamp their running game following the Michigan game and that did pay dividends for them against Tennessee and others.

It feels like Day insisted they run the ball down Michigan’s throats and Chip Kelly was just following orders.

Different offense with nothing to lose/targeting Smith 15 times a game.

Damn, their OL must be looking like garbage if they're talking about a complete reshuffle two weeks out. At least I hope so.

Everything the mods have been posting about the OL, while the actual practices have reflected uncertainty to the tune of guys getting moved positions and with 1’s, 2’s and 3’s, has looked like gaslighting.  “Serevield sucked last year and in the spring, but now he’s an electric Left Tackle!” Right. They’re having problems there. They were fucked last year until asking Jackson to bite the bullet and play out of position at LT after other injuries.

If OSU's OL isn't as good as they're hoping they'd be, at least in week one, it makes Klare not being much of a blocker a bigger deal, especially when you consider Sayin not being much of a running threat. If they want to run consistently they might have to play a second TE who's more of a blocker

This is why they’ve also been hyping up other TEs with the resident posters saying “really, that guy is coming on? alright!”

I know they have two new coordinators, but wasn't the Ohio St coaching staff on track to seriously underperform with by far the most talented team last year, until after the Michigan loss they made major changes on both sides of the ball?  Just curious if that was an aberration or if we could see it again this year.

Their defense was great all year. Losing Knowles is the biggest deal for them.

Agreed. I wasn't impressed before the injury. I will be surprised if he is somehow better after the injury. I guess we will see soon enough.

I wasn’t super impressed either until later in season. But Gerry always said he needed a year to develop his body.  And he was getting rave reviews prior to getting hurt.  Saban also praised him effusively.

Obviously, it goes without saying to say --- we struggled to run v. MICH - we have J. Smith - let's pass more.  There is 100% truth to that.

I believe it was this video:

They laid out the transition they made in the running game here I think.

Curious to watch how Sark allocates carries early in the season.
If Texas has 30 running plays vs Suckeyes,  maybe the breakdown is:
  • Wisner       14
  • Baxter         8
  • Clark           4
  • Gibson        2
  • Manning      2

White chocolate gets 1

And end around for a TD . The Shoe goes silent for a moment, then all Horn fans sing Moves Like Jagger.
It shall be.

Will Texas bring 4 RBs? I know SEC limits travel to 70 players. I am not sure about this match-up. Thought Texas brought 3 last year to Michigan, but I could be wrong. 4th would have to have special teams value, if they went in that direction

Expressing skepticism about a RB being 100 percent based on other running backs who had the same injury or even less severe knee injuries and their recovery is making stuff up.  You’re not this dumb. Come on.

Do you not remember everyone being shocked about Peterson’s season when he blew out a couple ligaments?

They are completely through fall camp and scimmages. Baxter is taking RB1 reps in quantity as well. That's not made up. That's actually happened and fact.

The coaches see him, people who are at practices see him. Everyone with eyes sees him. Just because YOU have not seen him doesn't mean he's not ready. I'm not dumb, you are projecting a bunch based off of very little to do with any evidence at all, and a bunch of anecdotal worrying. I'm not telling you it's stupid to worry about Baxter I'm saying it's just made up fantasy that he isn't ready to play.

About a year later, he ran for 86 yards against Arkansas (5.4 yds/carry). Many of us thought he was “back.” So sad…he was such a thoroughbred, except the knee. I was told his knees were abnormal even without the injury.

Curious as well. I won't be surprised if the number for Baxter is lower though in game 1. I also wonder how well the younger backs are doing in pass protection. Haven't seen any reports on that yet.

Per OTF, Sarkisian should be meeting with media around noon today.

Maybe he fell victim to unfair expectations, but I kind of thought Baxter was a bit underwhelming when healthy. The '23 team definitely looked a lot better to me when JBrooks was on the field. I'm not certain 80% makes Baxter a huge contributor. I also understand that it's possible for players to improve from their first year on campus. I hope that's the case here.

Seems like an absolute stud as a kid and love his interviews, but I just hope to see a player on the field who has some burst when there's a hole to run through this time around.

He looked different in the ‘24 spring game on the swing pass he caught.

Do I trust this staff and it's track record at recruiting transfer WRs?  Yes.  That should be a bigger hint about what we can expect at WR.

He'll be our #3 or 4 receiver, which is about what he would have been on the last two teams.

He doesn't play the same position as Livingston. Wasn't he more of a slot receiver at Stanford?

If he gets healthy he'll probably split reps with Moore. Also, if Sark runs a ton of 12 personnel that only leaves one spot for a receiver opposite Wingo, and you'd probably want it to be a deep threat who can block in the run game.

I think they can play him all over the place. Before he got hurt he was on the field at the same time as Wingo and Moore.

I feel confident this Texas defensive front seven is going to prison rape the Ohio State offense. I don't know about the rest of the matchups, but entering the season that to me looks like by far the biggest mismatch heading into this game.

Some points to consider:

- The shuffling of offensive linemen two weeks before the game. I'm not saying Ohio State can't have a good OL by the end of the season, but it's obvious to me they don't have any easy solutions for their starting 5, much less consistent back ups. They brought in 3 portal OL this past offseason after relying on portal guys last year. That's a strategy of desperation forced on to them by inadequate high school recruiting and development. I watched Oregon get butt fucked early in the season along their OL, but by midseason they had turned things around and really had a decent squad there. Ohio State can do the same. But they need reps, they need stability, and they're not going to have it for the season opener.

- Brian Hartline is now their OC. I don't understand what Ryan Day's role is going to be there after handing over all the responsibilities to Chip Kelly last season. I assume it's going to be something. He's a control freak (all head coaches are to some degree) but he figured out if he hired his mentor in Chip Kelly he could relinquish duties. Well, Hartline doesn't have Kelly's gravitas. He's wholly dependent on Day for his career arc, having been brought to Ohio State at the same time. How they manage their responsibilities will be something of a work in progress. Cracks in communication and the blame game aren't stress tested in the offseason. They're stress tested when things don't go well in the game, and the head person doesn't want to blame himself for the failures. Which isn't specifically a Ryan Day thing. It's a human thing. There's going to be inconsistencies in the approach, and an inability to have a convicted response when things go poorly.

- New quarterback. They're saying it's a competition, but it's not. It's going to be Sayin. Day wants to keep Kienholz engaged and put a fire under Sayin's butt. Similar to how Sarkisian handled the Card/Ewers competition, when it was always going to be Ewers. It's a pretty common coaching tactic. I don't really care. I've seen both approaches work. I think people get too worked up about this stuff. But neither of them have experience under fire. That's going to effect how well the offense runs.

- untested running backs. I assume someone they have back there is going to be uber talented. We know about Peoples from his time in HS. They like Donaldson, too. But the pair they had last year were special. I don't know how these two are going to compare to what they lost, but going into the game I'm going to assume there's at least a short term step back.

______________________________________________

Compare this to the other side of the LOS.

- Everyone across the country keeps talking about the edge room across the country. I'm not going to go into detail with a Texas audience. You guys could teach me about our roster there. I'm just going to say this will be the best group of edge rushers Ohio State sees all season, including the post season. In their first game. This is not going to be pretty.

- One thing that is being underestimated is our DTs. Now, this could very well be koolaid talking. It's happened to me before. Maybe we see a huge dropoff in production here from last year. The thing is, I assumed we'd see a big dropoff last year. I looked for signs of it, and was constantly complaining that early opponents had success running inside in ways that wouldn't have been possible with Murphy and Sweat in there the year before. As if it's completely normal to feature the two best DTs in the country on the same team. But the truth is, last year's DTs, while not as good individually, were in some ways better as a collective. It took me at least until midseason to begrudgingly admit I was wrong about the position in the preseason.

Well, I like this group even better. Again, this could be the koolaid talking, but I think Breverd and Watson are going to be an outstanding pair of first guys in. I feel like they are going to absolutely rag doll the OSU interior OL. But then we're bringing in Shaw and January, and there's no real drop off. Kanu gets some snaps against his former team and quickly realizes he could be playing more if he had just stayed put. Sharma does Sharma things for a few snaps. Maybe Charles gets some time. The thing is, I feel like us hardcore Texas fans view the DT position as a source of strength heading into the year that NO ONE in the national media or on the Ohio State side is giving us credit for. I feel confident the DT play is going to be one of the biggest revelations coming out of this game.

- I don't know if it should be combined with the edge players or not, but our linebacking corps is stupendous, especially in terms of being heat seeking missiles. Ty'Anthony Smith's emergence is just icing on an already well made Charlie Strong style cake. Hill is receiving as much attention as almost any defender in the country, so we're not exactly flying under the radar at this position. I just think it adds to the DLs coming dominance.

- Kwiatkowski and the rest of the defensive staff. As opposed to Ohio State, there's a lot of continuity on the defensive side of the ball, especially in the front seven. Obviously we've seen a lot of changes in the back end, but I'm not talking about our secondary matchup here. I just think a lot of players know their roles. The ones learning their roles are doing so next to players who have been in the program, led by coaches who are convicted in what they're doing and know how to successfully convey assignments. Everyone understands their chain of command. When mistakes happen there's not going to be an overt or subconscious scapegoating as to who's fault it was.

______________________________________________

I don't think any of this guarantees a Texas win. I like our chances heading into the game, but shit happens. Turnovers. Hostile crowd. Ohio State has amazing players. Ryan Day just won a national championship.

But I feel confident if the Buckeyes come out on top, it's going to be because they were able to overcome a complete annihilation upfront on offense.

The older you are, the more of these tragic injuries you've seen. Seeing Mike Gaddis go down in the open field on a non-contact injury is my trauma. Of all the great RB who played in Dallas the 2nd weekend in October, MG took a back seat to no one. He did everything a RB is supposed to do.

My sister got hit by a car in HS, early 70's. The scars on her legs, both sides of both knees, were ~ 8" long, and looked like something Dr. Frankenstein did.

They put 27 holes and tubes in my body for open-heart surgery. The biggest scar is the hardest one to see. It kind pisses me off it's not more prominent. My heart is much better than her legs.

Baxter will be a difference maker this year, if he can stay healthy. Couple reasons:

1. He was the best blocking freshman RB I have ever seen. Probably the #1 reason he started the season as freshman. Trust me Arch is elated to have Baxter blocking for him, instead of someone like Blue. Keep in mind many anticipate Texas to take more play action shots. I cannot stress how important a good blocking RB can be for the passing game.

2. Even if he is not 100% healthy. He has the size to be the effective short yardage  RB that Texas desperately missed last year. Just falling forward for 1 yard on a play blocked for 0 would make a difference.
3. Not discussed much, but he probably had the best hands of RBs. I cannot remember him dropping a pass. You get his big ass rolling in space, he is going to punish the secondary

He doesn’t have to be 100% to do that.

3 hours ago, Fud said:

He was a true freshman

All freshman RB can run. Very few of them can do the other things that are also important.

In HS, the hole you see will be there til you're finished running. In College, when you see the hole, it's already closing. In the NFL, if you're not in the hole when it opens, you're too late.
