And what?  We haven’t looked like a playoff caliber team this year. For about 1 half last week we did. Optics apparently matter because it’s all the media and everyone in college talk about Seeing how my prize picks have went this year I’m doubling down 9-3 Texas doesn’t get in.

It is true. We haven't been that good.

Going 9-3 means we beat either UGA or A&M and I would take that.

Agree, why wouldn't we want Georgia to win? If we go on the road next week and finally get over the hump in Athens, that is going to be the win that gets us into the playoffs even if we do drop one of the last two games.

BTW Utah is at 13 and they will probably win out. Could be problematic.

2 rig teams are already priced in above the cut line and the math to get a 3rd doesn't compute

if you beat tceh they have 2 losses - they would have to then somehow win the rig12 to get in - which would require you or uu to lose in the title game - which is not a problem for you - assuming you win out - but does prevent a 3rd rig team from making it - 1 rig with 1 loss and 2 rigs with 2 losses is fetch

if you lose to tceh - and assuming you win out - you have to win the rig title game to get in - and that winner will have 2 losses - and you will have 2 losses - and the other team that didn't play will have 2 losses

if you lose to tech and drop another you likely aren't in the title game and then sit in the 2-loss bucket.......

could be problematic

Saturday dream scenario for Texas fans:

  • Georgia loses to MSST (or really struggles)
  • BYU blows out Tech to hand them loss #2
  • aggycoaster plunges against Mizzou
  • Oregon loses to Iowa
  • ND loses to Navy
  • Florida beats Kentucky (the closer to .500 Florida ends up, the better for us)

I like it.  No scenario where rooting for an ou win.  Good. 2008 vibes no more.

BYU has multiple losses left.  It's the combo of Tech + Utah getting in that we need to worry about.

utah are not getting in even if they win out

they have 2 losses, and only total chaos puts them in the rig title game and requires their inclusion if they win

there are 2 rigs already priced in - we only have upside if they eat each other this month

i make it 50/50 only 1 makes it

at least until i see the klan are eliminated from atlanta

kiffin had an argument last year and he will go postal if the klan gets "screwed" this year

if we're 10-2 then absolutely we go over 10-2 klan because of scheduling fosu

if we're 10-2 and they make atlanta and lose they go over us at 10-3

Does Oregon losing help us? I want the B1G to only get three teams in. If Iowa loses, that knocks them out. Just let the Big10 have tOSU, Ind, and Oregon. The others (USC, Iowa, Wash, Mich) need to lose.

Don't really give a shit where we're ranked, tbh. If we win out, we're in. I need to see how they perform over the next three games. If we look like we did for the first three quarters against Vandy or the second half against OU, and lose a close game to Georgia or Aggy, then I'll start banging the drum for a 9-3 Texas team to make the playoffs. If we look like we have at any other point in the season, even if we make the playoffs we'll probably get our asses kicked so I don't give a shit.

I honestly don't know why it's problematic for some of you to understand that if everything stays the same and everyone that HAS TO play their head to heads plays that Texas is in if they take care of business no questions asked. The committee decided that Texas is in.

The question becomes okay what if Texas drops one of TAMU or Georgia who are top 5. Assuming that happens then Texas needs some help from a few sources:

1) any other SEC team ahead of them.

2) the ACC and Big XII teams underperforming or collapsing late season

3) Chaos in general (includes B1G and ND losses)

The likelihood of inclusion at 9-3 is based in order on the above. There's a billion permutations of that right now including the order of the third hypothetical loss for Texas.

Its best to: Root for anyone who Texas has yet to play to win until they play, if Texas has not and will not play them in SEC play for them to lose.

Beyond that root for everyone in the ACC or Big XII to look like complete ass and consolidate to a single team. Become BYU or Virginia fans.

Further beyond that wish for everyone to lose in embarassing fashion. Fuck Oregon and Dan Lanning, Marcus Freemans team implodes, Michigan beats Ohio State. Etc etc. Complete chaos HELPS Texas in a 9-3 scenario.

After Georgia we will have a lot clearer picture on what to root for in terms of exact teams and scheduled games. Unless Texas gets blown the fuck out they will remain in the conversation through the final game of the season.

They are high enough they would probably have to drop both to fall out of the playoffs imo

i think BYU, tech, Oregon and ND are the more likely to drop out with only one loss. Everyone ahead of them is pretty entrenched.

At the end of the day if Texas is 9-3 (6-2) in SEC and Ole Miss is 10-2 (6-2) the committee will be tasked with figuring out who is more deserving basically from scratch. If what they say is true that they aren't going to penalize Texas for scheduling up at Ohio state then the non conferences should be a push (Ole Miss played a bunch of shitty schools and won them all- Texas beat all their shitty schools).

That leaves a comparisson of Conference records:

Big Texas Wins:  Aggy, OU, Vandy

Texas losses- GA, Florida

Big Ole Miss wins: OU, LSU

Ole Miss losses- Ga (florida or MSST).

Texas draws more eyeballs and has Arch Manning.  They have much bigger wins.  The losses might actually be identical- if they aren't identical than Ole Miss will have a worse loss in MSST than we do at Florida.

The only argument for Ole Miss over Texas in that scenario is the loss column bias.  Texas will be higher ranked in all the computers and the logic will be on their side. If Ole Miss under those circumstances were to go before Texas than you would NEVER see SEC blue bloods schedule actual blue blood games.  This is a TV product. Which makes more money today- Texas or Ole Miss.  which makes more money in the future- Texas playing Ohio state or texas playing Rutgers.

I'm not guaranteeing it goes to Texas in this scenario- but I think it's likely it does.  Unless we get blown out by GA or something like that which seems disqualifying.

Joel Klatt is quite optimistic about Texas’ chances at 9-3

Good link.  Klatt's initial takeaways were almost exactly the same as mine.  #1 Texas certainly alive at 9-3 (as would OU if they were to somehow beat Bama for example) and #2, the Big 12 in a good position to get 2 teams in given placement of Utah.   The latter is what everyone is going to be talking about next week.  Utah's only losses are Tech and BYU.  So absent a blowout this week, the Committee almost has to slot the loser of Tech/BYU above Utah given H2H.   Keep an eye on that as other 2 loss teams rise and they probably have to eventually slot them above Utah and the outcry that would come from that (or a potential 3 loss Texas or OU).  Utah is high but really no games left on schedule that will impress anyone.   If I were on the committee - I probably would have pushed to slot Utah a bit lower for that issue alone as they will get a lot of grief if Utah wins out and they move teams ahead of them.

And I know they do this for ratings and so all the talk shows have content to talk about all week but really would be better if they waited another 1-2 weeks to get a bit more data.

This is 100% spot on.  What I would also say is this- 1, 2 and 3 don't all need to happen. It is plenty fine enough for us if any of 1, 2 or 3 happen.  If 2 happens for example then it's SEC-5, Big 10-3, ACC, Big12, Little sisters and domers each at 1.  Texas is in.

If the Domers lose then it's SEC 5, big 10, 3, big 12-2, ACC, little sisters 1 each.

If the SEC only gets 4 teams in 9-3 Texas can be one of them if Ole Miss loses another game (Florida, MSST), OU loses another game (alabama, blah blah blah) aggy loses 3 (@missou, SCAR, us), Bama loses 2 more, etc etc.  We get to 4th place in the conference pecking order and it's also automatic regarless of what else happens.

No, you want Georgia to lose. Georgia is ahead of you in the rankings, and you will play them. You have a path to eliminate a competitor.

If they have another loss, you can knock them out from contention by winning. There are more paths available to you if they lose and that outweighs the bonus points you get if they are ranked above you if they win. You would get a quality win regardless and you’d pull ahead in a tiebreaker if you both end up 9-3. If they lose and then beat you, then it’s no difference than if they win and beat you: they will be considered before you for the CFP.

Always look for the scenario that gives you the most pathways ahead. And don’t overvalue the “best possible” scenario (beating a highly ranked Georgia). That doesn’t outweigh the upside of just knocking them out of contention for a spot you want. This discussion is real time evidence for never gambling on sports if you have a rooting interest.

Good observations on Big 12. If BYU loses to Tech, BYU shouldn't drop below Utah. We both would have losses vs Tech and BYU beat Utah head to head. BYU would only have one loss versus Utah's two. Utah being so high right now could create some messiness.

No, that's just unrealistic nonsense talk Georgia is in barring a season implosion and that's bad for the entire SEC. And GA Tech beating georgia after georgia loses to other people introduces another wrinkle entirely. This is just wrong as you are replacing a team instead of eliminating one with this logic. They will have 2 conference losses, loss head to head against Texas and not be in.

Not wishcasting Utah anything. I don't want them in the CCG or playoff. I shared an observation that with that high of a ranking now, they are still in the mix. They do have a path or two, but they are not in control of their destiny.

BYU could falter down the stretch (we did last year) and Tech, TCU, and Cinci are a gauntlet. But, I expect us to go 2-1 there (plus a win vs UCF), give Cinci its third loss, and end up in the CCG at 11-1. If we do that, then I think we are in the playoff win or lose.

Yep.    And if Tech loses they shouldn't drop below Utah either considering H2H win @ Utah.  And then if those 3 keep winning (unimpressive) games, it will be a mess as teams around them in the rankings inevitably have better wins.  And you also still have a (shitty) Cincy team out there with one conference loss that could create chaos sneaking into championship game (if, for example, BYU beats Tech but then Cincy beats BYU at home, I think you would have a Cincy/BYU rematch in championship game with 2 loss Tech and Utah not playing).  So yeah, a Big 12 shitshow because of committee backing themselves into a corner based on initial Utah ranking is definitely on my radar.

No, I’m not. You’re disliking the math.

A better way to look at this: its T+2. Do you want the worst case to be grabbing the 4th SEC slot or the 5th one? Because if Georgia loses and then you beat them, you can lose to A&M and you are still no worse than 4th in based on H2H. If Georgia wins, and you beat them but lose to A&M, then you are hoping that the committee elevates you at 9-3 over a 10-2 UGA. I am assuming the favorites win. That’s not going to happen, but that doesn’t mean it’s smart to bet against it happening in any given contest.

I cannot emphasize enough that you want to pass teams that are currently in front of you in any way you can.  You can do that by having UGA lose games. The committee ranks teams, not conferences.

If we were sitting at 8-1 with a Louisiana Monroe win in place of the Ohio St loss, we would almost certainly be ahead of Notre Dame, Oregon, Tech and BYU. We are definitely still being compared to other 2 loss teams and not 1 loss teams.

The problem with saying that a game will be ignored is that there are only so many data points to begin with.  I dunno how they ever get to a point where even losing close to the #1 team gets completely ignored.

Amazing to see so many adults being - or pretending to be - deluded into believing that the Judges in your favorite Beauty Contest are operating on some sort of objectively logical basis.

"Yeah, no... you're right, cookie baking is a more useful talent than baton twirling, and she did drop the baton eleven times... but those titties!"

You might have a point in there somewhere if your notion of Beauty were 1-for-1 congruent with money money money.

Money money money

Ratings ratings ratings

9-3 Texas on TV outdraws Tech, Utah, etc. we are comparable with ND and BYU (huge national fan bases)

Committee will come up with brand new metrics and pretzel a way to fit 9-3 Texas for the ratings

that was a different issue.  barring crazy upsets in the Big 12, the Big 12 is getting 2, ACC 1, and then G5.  B1G, ND, and SEC fighting over 8 spots.  ND losing would be nice(water is wet)

Unfortunately, assuming we go 9-3, I think beating UGA and losing to aggy is the best path (bad for Texas fans tho). It is not realistic to assume much other chaos in the top 10 (ie ole  miss, Oregon, BYU/Tech winner, ND arent likely to implode). Given that, and that UGA already has a loss, our path in would likely hinge on 9-3 Texas getting compared to 10-2 UGA with the H2H win. The other way around and there isnt a realistic scenario for 11-1 aggy getting ranked behind 9-3 Texas.

Beat UGA, we probably rank around 8 jumping ND and BYU/Tech loser. Uga maybe falls to 12. Beat Ark we stand pat. Close loss to aggy and we fall to 11 with the H2H win keeping UGA at 12. G5 winner takes the last spot over UGA. This assumes ACC winner is top 10.

The only realistic chaos I think we can hope for is OU beating Bama, which adds to our SOS, might drop Bama to the 11-12 elimination range. and might keep us ahead of OU with H2H.

I think it's more likely that at 9-3 we drop to 12 and get eliminated by G5 winner no matter what, but a boy can dream.

that was a different issue.  barring crazy upsets in the Big 12, the Big 12 is getting 2, ACC 1, and then G5.  B1G, ND, and SEC fighting over 8 spots.  ND losing would be nice(water is wet)

FSU shouldve been in that game. They didnt get put in there because everyone knew they would be non-competitive and a rating albatross. But a player getting injured shouldnt erase an undefeated season and a hard earned spot. That's kind of bullshit.

Money money money

Ratings ratings ratings

9-3 Texas on TV outdraws Tech, Utah, etc. we are comparable with ND and BYU (huge national fan bases)

Committee will come up with brand new metrics and pretzel a way to fit 9-3 Texas for the ratings

It's ratings but not necessarily playoff ratings. The worst outcome for all of the networks is an obvious situation where a 9-3 Texas is out but if Texas scheduled a directional school instead of OSU, they are clearly in.  Texas/OSU was, by far, the most watched game this season.  They need more of those types of games in September and don't want to punish teams for playing them.

I disagree.   Particularly if A&M is undefeated.   That would be a signature win in front of a huge audience right before the last rankings that will really matter.  Assuming Texas plays UGA close, a 9-3 Texas would jump a bunch of 2 loss teams.   And if you are looking for a path for a 9-3 Texas you definitely don't want OU to beat Bama.  Because Bama only has 1 conference loss and likely still makes SEC championship and OU would be favored their remaining games.   A 9-3 Texas isn't getting in ahead of a 10-2 OU regardless of H2H.

These are solid points and I am pretty torn. My main thinking: 1) is there that much difference between beating #5 and #3?, and 2) given how the remaining schedules look, if we arent able to bump a team out of the current top 10, we arent getting in. I only see that happening with H2H win comparison. It feels like there will be a bunch of 10-2 teams at the end.

Let me end this now, if we are playing well enough to beat UGA on the road, we are absolutely beating aggy at home. Those chucklefucks have played nobody and Reed is gonna get Mateered.
