You’re (not surprisingly) missing a key element of your company’s plight during that timeframe: a lot of companies were doing anything to make them not come off as racist and more accepting to minorities without fully understanding what that is or how that works.

I saw a lot of companies doing shit and as a Black man, my first thought was “you’re going in so hard that it’s clear you don’t know what this means.” Even my college in Texas tried to lean in a lot more, especially during that time frame (George Floyd), and I had to keep telling them “that is not what minorities/Blacks/Latinos are asking you do to. Instead, how about you actually ask what some of this shit means and stop assuming.

So part of the reason you and others believe what you believe it because you saw people and companies acting in ways they shouldn’t have been because they failed to actually reach out to minorities to see what they should be doing.

I feel like anyone who was moderately intelligent and genuinely cared about moving forward in this country with how we treat minorities could see how unabashedly shallow these giant companies were being in 2020. I'm not exactly buying Lockheed Martin's commitment to diversity because they changed their LinkedIn company profile to be rainbow during gay pride month.

I disagree.  He knows he's racist and is happy being racist.  He's just too much of a coward to openly admit it.

That's certainly true.  But....it's also where and how change STARTS.  Shit, it's like family counseling.  I'm not asking you to show up to counseling already agreeing that you have your own shit/baggage to deal with, and acknowledging that some of that shit/baggage contributes to our overall family dysfunction.  I'm just asking you to show up.  Be there.  Participate in the conversation.  Over time, the honesty and self-reflection will come, and then we'll end up in a place where we can all move forward together.

Shit, I'm not asking or expecting Lockheed to hire a shitload of engineers from HBCUs.  I would just like it if they sent a rep to interview week and solicited resumes from candidates at HBCUs.  Maybe they start out thinking it's a waste of time, and shit duty, and all that.  But....they end up hiring a guy from Jackson State.  And he turns out to be a damned fine engineer.  And the guys on his team at LM end up realizing that Jackson State cranks out some good engineers.  And that guy says "hey, my prof at Jackson State knows who his best students are, why don't we call him and see if he has any recs for us?"  And they get the names of three top students.  And they end up interviewing and hiring another JS engineer.  And that's how things roll on.  Those JS engineers?  They're as good or better than someone from Georgia Tech, who studied under the same prof the 60 year old LM team lead studied under, back when almost all the engineering students were white dudes.

Not only can we not start the process or conversation anymore, even having the conversation leads to full-on attack and sanction against the enterprise by the government of the United States (and the State of Texas, in our case).  It is literally AGAINST THE LAW NOW for Lockheed Martin to make any particular effort to reach out to HBCUs that were not previously on its interview plan.

It's been a busy morning, and I'm just now finally getting caught. @Enchubben, I'm sure you've been overwhelmed with all the notifications and angry comments. But I hope you take a moment to consider this. I wanted to reach out and offer up a simplified explanation of where your concerns, as a (I assume) middle-aged white Texan male, should rate on a scale of being discriminated against in hiring practices at the workplace.

1 - We discriminate against historically marginalized groups.

2 - We don't discriminate and are an equal opportunity employer (EOE)

3 - We actively reach out to historically marginalized groups to build a more diverse talent pool for hiring prospects (DEI).

4 - We make sure to set aside a percentage of seats for historically marginalized groups (Affirmative Action).

5 - We discriminate against the dominant group that has historically occupied this company.

I've been thinking for a while that democracy is fucked as a system of government because people can't handle it.  I don't know if it's because of intentional acts by billionaires or the physical laws of the universe.  Either way, it's not working.

To function properly, democracy requires an informed electorate, so yeah. It's fucked.

Also this.  Every single person lamenting "inflammatory rhetoric leading to violence" has zero, nada to say about Kirk saying that the president of the United States should be executed.  HIs literal words were that Biden "should be given the death penalty."

So, to be clear, impermissible "inflammatory rhetoric" is calling Charlie Kirk a racist when he says plainly racist shit.

A big nothingburger, making no impact on your conclusion that he's a good Christian man, is saying that a member of the political opposition, who happens to hold the office of POTUS, "should be given the death penalty."

Wilhoit's law, double-standard, all of that.  Enchubben has no answer for it.  Because his belief system is that anything conservatives say or do is per se okay, because they are conservatives.  And nothing that anyone opposing conservatives do is good or merits any protection, because they are not conservatives.  Enchubben believes this, and thinks it is okay and is how things should work.

What possible relevance could that have to anything or anyone?  There are 100,000 reasons to hate the Cowboys and their fans (I can list them, as I share in most of them).  But mentioning the race/ethnicity of their fans WOULDN'T EVEN FUCKING OCCUR TO ME, BECAUSE I'M NOT A FUCKING WHITE SUPREMACIST.

You know, I wanted to go back and correct this statement I made.  I HAVE made reference to the ethnicity of Cowboys fans in the past - specifically, to hispanic Cowboys fans.  I've made that reference with respect to.....how much they've assimilated.  As in, you've got a group of dudes who work their ass off all week, and then on Sunday, they want to fire up the grill, pop open a few cold ones with their buddies, and watch los Cowboys.  That's as American and Texan as it fucking gets.  FFS, we should all want to hang with those dudes (see, I like hanging with Cowboys fans because I can drink their beer and laugh at their misfortune).  So "have you noticed that Cowboys fans include a buncha mexican dudes" is evidence for the EXACT THING that Charlie Kirk specifically bitched about - seriously, he used these exact words or close to them: "they come here and they don't assimilate."

How much more can you assimilate into American and Texan culture than grilling meat and drinking cold beer while watching the NFL on Sunday?  There's only one thing they can't do, and that's the thing that he holds against them: they can't turn white.  And THAT is what the Charlie Kirks of the world mean by "they don't assimilate."

while this is written very poorly, i have a strong feeling that this is likely the speculation that will most closely align with reality if we are able to ascertain the truth.

no one outside of robinson truly knows but it certainly feels this way to me at this point without greater understanding and more extensive facts. that (along with the lack of cooperation) is a contributing factor to the inability for anyone in authority to articulate a motive that satiates everyone's need to pigeonhole this as political violence in traditional ways that allows people to act sanctimonious. if this does turn out to be the explanation, pam bondi, donald trump, kash patel, etc... are simply not equipped to understand this fucked up subculture and they certainly can't articulate it to the public at large so they will instead not "waste a crisis" and leverage it for their more nefarious efforts given the ambiguity.

we, as posters on surly, have multiple orders of magnitude greater understanding of this derivative subculture than the average person just by being on here and barraged with memes and otherwise "for the lulz" online culture of disassociated people...and i would guess that most of us can't even express or accurately vocalize how this comes to be. the public at large is completely at a loss. while i am not perpetually online, i am on a fucking lot and i have insight into the internet subculture but i had no idea who "destiny" was until someone here started linking it. i also have never been a gamer so i have never been exposed to a lot of the threshold for this subculture. but for me to struggle to internalize the motivation (if it turns out to be accurate) accompanying this event...the public at large will never stand a chance and everyone will simply project their preferences and biases unfortunately.

There's a lot to unpack here. One thing I'll point out is the cruelty of using social pressure to force someone into a gender that they are not. Much like forces transpeople to remain in the one that they aren't.

Does this "transmaxxing" extend to actual surgery? Seriously, imagining some weak-willed, Theojon-like, but straight cis guy, to have his dick chopped off, undergo a surgical procedure to construct a vagina, take hormones, grow tits, and all that just so that he can be forced into having sex with other guys because they can't get it anywhere else. What a gotdam torturous nightmare.

That's just about the most fucked up thing I've ever heard of, if it's actually a thing.

As a parent and now a grandparent, the thing that has stayed with me about this while thing (the shooter and his motives, etc.) is something I read the mom said or commented on.

I read somewhere and I'll try to find the source but it's been a few days, where the family member or the mom said something to the effect of "he was into his games and internet and even went as some sort of meme once for Halloween when he was in high school" and was just so oblivious and hand-wavey about the whole thing. Clearly no real oversight or discipline into how he was raised with respect to technology. That screams to me either laziness or apathy, but either way, a very dangerous way to raise kids in the social media/internet dsytopian timeline.

Like many kids, if he maybe had more attentative caregivers who moderated and policed his online behavior and activity as a youth and teen in those developmental years, maybe some of the internet-induced mental illness could have been avoided.

Then again, maybe guys in their late 20's and 30's end up breaking their brains on the internet on their own and it was inevitable. I truly don't know.

I don't think I've encountered the concept of transmaxing before, but this certainly tracks with what I do know about groypers and the alt-right in general. That cocktail of self-hatred, repressed same-sex attractions, misogyny, etc. can certainly lead to some extremely weird shit.

The supposed redeeming qualities that I've seen cited by fans are that he was a) a Christian (not an especially extraordinary quality), b) loved his family (also not a low bar), c) was willing to shout his beliefs at anyone who could hear them (only requires a bit of hubris or self-confidence), and d) successfully built a "movement" (admittedly a great skill, but he also had access money).

This situation kinda reminds me of when Zuckerberg had to testify in front of Congress a few years back, and it became very clear that the old politicians have no idea how social media/the internet works and he could relax and wipe the floor with them.

The world is moving so fast and the internet has provided dark corners that most are completely clueless about. Even a 25 year old probably has no idea what HS kids are doing these days.

This is actually very true.  I work for Lockheed and we had a meeting a few weeks ago to brainstorm ideas on how we should compete vs "distruptor" startups that don't have to go through the rigorous processes that established companies like LM, Raytheon or northrup have to go through during development.  These "distruptors" have ties with people within Palantir and with Elon.  And there's the threat of the pentagon cancelling contracts next month (beginning of the new fiscal year) and putting them out to bid again.

Got it.  And not only fair, but absolutely accurate.

The speed with which companies shifted from "we should have a DEI program to work towards a more balanced, high-qualityworkforce" to "yes, we're going to bid on that gas chamber project at Auschwitz, and here are the names of all of our employees who have ever said anything disloyal to the regime" is disappointing.  Not shocking or surprising, but still disappointing.

That's because the regime has made it very clear that there is only one criterion that matters in bidding, contracting, etc.: loyalty and fealty to the regime.

Not only does the quality or price of the product or service not matter, "high quality at a good price" is a net-negative, because such an approach presents limited opportunity for grift and enrichment of members of the regime.

Because I hadn't been touched by the algo before he died, i searched out a bunch of short form videos and from what I can gather, he was basically a really articulate (truly) thinker and speaker who reasoned with logic really well extemporaniously (at least, relative and compared to young college students) and defended his conservative positions well.

Ok. So he debated well.  Did ever say anything you'd put on a poster? Anything that would resonate with a non-Christian or a non-conservative?

If a proper DEI strategy was in place like the one you described (where it was meant to increase the initial pool of candidates) I don’t think most people would have a complaint here.

Thats not what happens in the real world, because the natural next step is to track “progress” which means hires of those candidates based on predetermined goals or quotas. What follows is incentivizing people based on hiring those with that criteria, then punishment of those that don’t. Again, I’m sure this isn’t everywhere, but this is my experience exactly, and I don’t think I’m alone.

I’d revert back to my initial point, which was Charlie’s arguments we’re never we don’t need black people in the workforce because they don’t have brain power. He wasn’t racist, and calling him that is cheap and lazy at best. I bet I would find something similar in what many find to be his most “deplorable” quotes or statements. People hated him because  their algorithm and social media circle told them to hate him, not because he was actually a bad person.

Yeah I feel comfortable saying you're racist

That's the weird part to me though, even dorks in high school got laid. It was just with other dorks. The actual amount of people not getting action had to be vanishingly small, the notion of widespread incel culture is just unfathomable to me.

You didn’t have social media in high school to keep you indoors (literally) and not go out to see people in the real world. These kids were set up for failure.

I got tired of seeing people post hateful comments about a man who was shot in the neck in front of his wife and kids with little to no actual knowledge about his beliefs.

You are entitled to your opinion about his ideologies, and I don’t hate you for having them.

I don't know dawg, seems you are the one with no actual knowledge about his beliefs.  It's been proven over and over and over again in this thread.

Yeah, I mean logically I get that, but it just is hard to comprehend. The drive to bang is the most powerful one there is, and there's more girls than guys, so I just can't see being stopped by the interwebs. But obviously something is going on.

Agree. To quote Costanza:

Thats everything!  I don’t know what the rest of it’s for anyway.
