Here’s my bottom line. The hate has to stop. Both sides. This guy didn’t deserve to die but gun violence needs to stop. The hateful rhetoric against other citizens needs to stop. We need to focus on why we are pitted against each other - the evangelical Christian and I have way more in common than either of us have in common with the corporatists and the billionaires. We need reform up and down across so many areas. We should not let them turn us against ourselves so that they can make our lives miserable while taking from society for their own personal benefit. It’s right there to see. I wish I wish somehow we could figure this crap out.

See goddamnit you post some shit like this and I am 100% in agreement.

I eat a lot of fiber and this has not been my experience. Bidet for the win.

Is "Bidet" French for how you say "Manservant you hired from near the dumpsters behind the Hancock HEB to wipe your ass"?

Correct.  Give it a day and a half.

No, it'll be longer than that, and somebody will probably try to keep it in the news for a bit.  When/if they catch the shooter, then it will start to die down.

Which takes me back to this - after watching the available videos a few times..

Working Super Troopers GIF

Given that the tent/canopy he was sitting under was not very tall and where he was located, that was a somewhat of a flatter trajectory than I originally thought - don't get me wrong, there was definitely some elevation there (and the campus has some dips and elevations around there, plus the building), but not as much as I would have thought to get in under the tent.  And I definitely think they were shooting center mass and the elevation/angle of Kirk (and slight movement, there was some) meant it hit his neck.

Edit: Just saw the video from the side view - he might have had a higher elevation than I thought.  If he shot from the side, a more difficult shot, but he was shooting at his torso.

The video of the shooter seems odd, because for somebody who pulled this off, it doesn't seem like they would have exposed themselves to potential discovery.  Unless he was sure of himself and had rehearsed it and got in place and fired in literal seconds and then took off.  The fact that they got away on a somewhat crowded campus meant they were probably moving while Kirk was still starting to fall over.

They better catch the guy.  There's no way somebody like that is going to have a list with only Charlie Kirk's name on it.

I'm hating FB and all of the bullshit conspiracy theories about shadowy groups.  This dude had to be a lone wolf, because the more people involved, the more likely somebody panics or fucks up.

A horrific instant perpetrated by a confused and deranged reactionary caught in high definition could be the greatest tool for ratcheting down the frenzy of resentment in this hate-fueled engine of conjured cultural angst. The digital barrage wouldn't stand a chance if the stark reduction of media corners and "content" could momentarily be placed aside in favor of sympathy and revulsion of such senseless violence. The clarity of that fork in the road is so obvious that it seemingly taunts everyone mired in their identity rut of ideology. It's right there. But failure flirting with greatness is a common literary trope. And here it is. But doesn't it still feel so hopeless? That current, strident but often imaginary, runs opposed in two lanes that each run so swift everyone forgets it's ultimately a whirlpool of shared experience. That person who briefly hesitated at the door of the gas station to give the door an additional flick of the wrist so you could catch it. They might have represented everything you despise but you didn't know it in that momentary glimpse of effortless consideration. The list of people who deserve to have their carotid artery severed in sunlight is a short one. And that list does exist. But I don't believe this young man deserved to be on that list. Charlie Kirk:

Controversial statements on race and diversity

Criticism of Black pilots and DEI: In January 2024, Kirk stated, "If a Black pilot is seen, it's necessary to hope he's qualified," while arguing that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are "anti-White".

Comments on Black crime: In 2023, Kirk discussed what he called "Black crime" in inner cities, referring to it as a "huge problem no one wants to talk about".

Denunciation of the Civil Rights Act: During a December 2023 Turning Point USA event, Kirk stated, "We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s," claiming it led to a "permanent" bureaucracy promoting diversity.

Racist dog whistles: In September 2024, Kirk was among the first to spread unproven allegations that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were eating cats and dogs. This led to former President Donald Trump repeating the false claim in a televised debate.

Support for "Great Replacement" theory: In a February 2024 Instagram post, Kirk referenced the debunked "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory, which alleges that undocumented immigrants are intentionally replacing white Americans. In August 2024, he also accused a Black lawmaker of being part of an "attempt to eliminate the white population in this country".

Disparagement of Martin Luther King Jr.: Kirk dismissed Martin Luther King Jr. as a "mythological creation" of the 1960s and, during a 2023 event, called him "awful" and "not a good person".

Anti-LGBTQ rhetoric

LGBTQ+ agenda claims: Kirk frequently spoke against what he termed the "LGBTQ agenda," portraying it as a threat to American culture and claiming its efforts would "corrupt your children".

Statements on gender identity: He declared that "there are only two genders" and described transgenderism as "lies that hurt people and abuse kids". He also claimed in 2022 that transgender people were to blame for inflation.

Opposition to transgender healthcare: Kirk vocally opposed gender-affirming care, stating in 2024, "We must ban trans-affirming care — the entire country," and called for Donald Trump to run on this issue.

Homophobic slurs: In 2023, Kirk courted controversy by saying that if January 6 rioters had "stripped naked and filmed themselves having gay sex," they would have been treated more leniently.

Biblical interpretation of homosexuality: In 2024, Kirk cited Leviticus 20:13, which refers to "men lying with men... abomination," calling it "God's perfect law when it comes to sexual matters".

Antisemitic claims

Jewish control conspiracies: In October 2023, Kirk repeated antisemitic tropes about Jews controlling various sectors, alleging they dominated universities, non-profits, and Hollywood.

Philanthropy accusations: He accused "elite" Jewish philanthropies of funding universities that foster antisemitism, thereby "subsidising your own demise".

Claims of anti-white animus: In April 2025, Kirk claimed on his show that Jewish communities "have been pushing the exact kind of hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them". He also alleged that "the philosophical foundation of anti-whiteness has been largely financed by Jewish donors in the country".

Pandemic-related misinformation

Promotion of COVID-19 conspiracy theories: During the pandemic, Kirk used his platform to spread false and misleading information, including claiming the drug hydroxychloroquine was "100 percent effective" against the virus and promoting baseless conspiracy theories about Chinese authorities.

Opposition to mask mandates and lockdowns: He vocally opposed public health measures like mask mandates and school lockdowns.

Vaccine comparisons: In 2021, Kirk reportedly compared vaccine requirements to apartheid.

Other controversial statements

Promotion of Christian nationalism: Kirk embraced Christian nationalism, warning of a "spiritual battle" against "wokeism, Marxism and Islam." He also referenced the "Seven Mountains Mandate," a political-religious philosophy calling for Christians to control key areas of society.

Comments on gun deaths: After a 2023 mass shooting in Nashville, Kirk claimed that a certain number of gun deaths was a worthwhile "cost" for preserving the Second Amendment.

Support for January 6 rioters: In a January 2021 post on X, Kirk promoted busing "patriots" to Washington, D.C., to "fight for the president" ahead of the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Following the riot, he claimed the rioters did not represent the mainstream of Trump's support.

I’m surprised a podcaster got a pronouncement from the Oval Office but a Minn state politician murdered in her home got silence from this administration. Also no mention of the PA governor’s mansion burning down while the governor was there with his kids. Huh. It’s almost like the administration is ok with certain kinds of political violence, but I can’t seem to find the through line.

Ah, thank you for the context. His 2nd amendment quote seemed grotesquely insensitive but at least debatable. But these other quotes make it clear that he’s a modern shock-jock which unfortunately makes him a thought-leader similar to Rush Limbaugh.

It would be great if this moment led to a true change in our country where we actually talk about the inherent rot in our country related to gun violence. But we won't. We'll do the usual finger pointing and trying to score points on the other side. The same thing happened after the Minnesota representative was murdered. Then we'll go about our lives until the next time this happens which should come along shortly.

I think it is very easy for folks to confuse expressions of “you reap what you sow” with “he got what he deserved”, when they aren’t really quite the same thing.

I suspect @Murfdogg21’s claim that many on the left are saying he got was he deserved is rooted in posts like #2 of this thread and the 20+ FAFO reactions. What Kirk said was ugly and insensitive and not worth saying, but that quote is dominating every discussion about yesterday’s horrific event.
