If I am James Franklin and I wanted to be a real motherfucker, I would sign on to coach at the next university for minimum wage due to the offset language in the Penn State contract. Then I would go to my new school and say "Use my coaching salary as an NIL warchest". You would turn some shit around super quickly and hamstring Penn State in the process.

Not sure if Franklin's contract explicitly carved it out, but with duty to mitigate there's typically a reasonableness standard.  He could go a couple million below market and it probably wouldn't be worth PSUs time to litigate, but something like what you describe would be a slam dunk.

Yup, these contracts always include that language, except for desparate aggy contracts. It goes to the question "why settle"? Both sides want a clean break without the need to calculate or litigate whether a coach complied with these relatively vague standards i.e. "diligence" "appropriate" "good faith" and "reasonable salary." It's a situation where both sides know at the time the contract is entered into that it is vague and expectations are to negotiate a settlement if required.

Man what a disaster at Wisconsin , I genuinely feel bad for them having no ties to the team. I don't think anyone saw the Fickell tenure going this way

The Saban tree is far superior to the Meyer tree imho.

Bingo and I think Franklin would be a really good hire for VaTech if they used this approach.

What do they look like if you exclude retreads?

WOW. Wisconsin has officially given up.

How has Wiscky "given up" if they're gonna make 'a significant increase in financial commitment'?

Are we assuming Luke Fickell has forgotten how to coach?

The most beautiful part of Louisiana is actually the LSU campus. We took a tour when we went Marti Gras and it is actually beautiful. They have these oak trees that are incredible. They have tulip trees hanging (I believe that's what they are), and Azaleas.

I can hate the state and their sports, but I can't bring myself to hate their campus.

This part of the carousel is entirely too quiet except for the daily unforced buffoonery out of Baton Rouge.

I feel like Auburn is too quiet to be disorganized this time around which is a damn shame, i was really hoping to see Deion make his way over there

Penn State is similarly tight lipped

Franklin appears to have a massive offer from VTech prepared, but isn't / hasn't signed - probably waiting for a bigger program

Dude.

Deion's health situation is not good.

Well tell me about the last time you hired a coach, or is all your insight based on your room mate's buddies raising money to hire a coach? Which by the way with all the VC and Fracking money in Fort Worth how the hell is Tech so far ahead of TCU?
Neuheisel certainly knows more about football than you and the frog mafia.  That is why he is on TV and radio and talks about College Football 12 hours a day. Guess we will see how it all shakes out soon enough. You can give me hell when Patterson turns down a job.

You got me, those tv and radio people are never wrong and know what is going on in every program in the country.

Damn silly of me to bring actual facts like Gary's record to this discussion, but that is all irrelevant because I am not on the radio and tv.

As to how Tech is so far of TCU,  partly a billionaire stepping up at Tech which is to his credit and two big issues at TCU.

The first was an athletic director in way over his head?  The guy pissed off key boosters,  was too busy enjoying the benefits of what he basically was gifted by Del Conte, and TCU failed to focus their NIL efforts. The Frogs are just not getting over the split between NIL groups and making a concentrated effort. Unfortunately for us the poor Bezos brother went to TCU, the CEO and not the founder of Nike is a Frog, and the TCU alum who would have spent like Campbell died in 2020.  Timing is everything.

The other was the number of old money alums and boosters who got pissed when Gary was fired, really didn't want Dykes as coach, and then went ballistic when Briles was hired as OC to replace Riley.  Unfortunately much of that old money would have been happy to keep Gary around and ride "his" program into the ground because he deserved to instead of doing what was in the best interest of the TCU program.

True and I think that is some of the reason why some of the older money was pissed about Sonny.

He spent time working with the staff in 2017, took the SMU job, beat Gary in 2019 and 2021 and then won with "Gary's players" who had quit on Gary the year before.

There is still good talent to be found to play at TCU, but there are issues that need to be dealt with, just not sure if they have the people in place for the job.  I might not be on tv or radio, but I do know that the program is in a better place than 2021 and better than had Gary stayed because he was going to pull a Bowden or a Gundy.

I said it in another thread but TCU is still a really good job.

I think Dykes is kind of fucking y'all by being just good enough that it's tough to fire him. You need an upgrade at HC.

It is the awkward question of do you keep a coach who will get you 9-10 wins, but won't consistently put you in a position to compete for titles.

Sonny has brought about a number of good changes that were needed in the program and I think he is that guy who can lay out a solid blueprint, BUT he isn't the guy to put that blueprint into place, isn't a great evaluator of coaching talent, and I think he is still too old school in the thinking an HC makes all the decisions when the job to run a college program has gotten much harder, Harder than when his Dad coached, harder than what Gary faced when he helped rebuild the program.

Schools will ultimately have to figure out how to feel about managing coaching assets in an environment where success in unreasonably judged by how often you are one of the 136 programs that gets one of the 12 CFB playoff spots. 10-2 is no longer a safe measuring stick. It’s crazy.

Was this chat w you? Was responding to the guy who thinks he knows more than Neuheisel. There is a shortage of coaches, Patterson was a pretty good coach and took TCU places they had never been. That was my only point. Then some "insider" wants to crap all over Patterson. Fine. Would expect Patterson to get a job at a place like Okie St or a program that gets poached. That is all i was saying.

If Silverfield does end up at Arkansas I hope Traylor can get the Memphis job. Would give him a 3 year runway to finally get a P4 job before retirement. This is all assuming he does not upgrade to an in state job this cycle.

I think 10-2 is completely safe at 90% of schools. It all comes down to the expectations of the donors. Look at Ferentz. 8-4 to 10-2 every few years is good enough there. But it’s also boosted by him occasionally giving the fans an all time upset at home. He’s got a least half a dozen wins over top 10 teams and has knocked off OSU, PSU, and UM when they had a top 3 ranking.

10-2 gets you in the playoff at any P4 school almost every year now.

A few seasons of 10-2 would get Ryan day fired if the losses were to Michigan and didn’t include deep playoff runs or better.

I think there are a handful of schools that are definitely in danger of expecting too much. UF and Auburn both felt warranted. Neither of those guys were showing any real signs of improving their teams. I was a little surprised at LSU pulling the plug on Kelly this year, even though I thought that was never a good fit. But they brought in the top transfer class and he got worse with it. The biggest question with new hires is how long do schools give them to show improvement.

With Franklin it felt like it was always going to get to this point but he always did just enough to keep it going. The decade of being unable to beat a top team because he coaches scared, having to fire 3 of 5 OCs, being unable to develop a qb or hire someone who could, finally getting g his 5* gunslinger and coaching him to play scared for years, not being able to tell if the qb he had could win a championship. There were other failures but the two main things that sunk him were the mismanagement of the QB position and the inability to ever win a big game. Then, if he can’t win the big games, he couldn’t afford to produce back to back weeks of decades old failure records.

Crapping? Huh,  Gary did great things for the program and the school, but I don't see my ability to recognize and express that Patterson's time at TCU followed the same pseudo-Greek tragedy as Bowden, Gundy, heck Tom Landry for that matter and others as crapping on him. Especially when the history is there in his record over those last few seasons and issues inside and around the program.

Secondly, there is not a shortage of coaches. There is a shortage of name brand coaches.  If you are hiring a coach based upon their name recognition or wow value then you deserve the results when they don't succeed.

What was Kirby's record as a HC before he took the UGA job,  same with the guy at UO,  Saban in his first 4 years at Michigan State was barely above .500 in conference and overall before he went 9-2 in year 5,  Urban was very successful at Utah where most people discounted his success and as many people as I can name who did succeed there are coaches who "should" have been successful but weren't for a number of reasons.

Most of the talking heads don't truly know shit about who would be a great hire at whatever program because they are there to create content and not provide accurate information.  They aren't working with these guys and going against them on the field and in recruiting.

Not different than the people who create mock drafts and recruiting rankings.

I cannot figure out what he's mad about and what he thinks constitutes libel. He's mad about the likely new president, okay. He appears to be mad about Brian Kelly's firing but doesn't mention that, he mentions the AD, and something about Jimbo's buyout, but it's true that the AD was at aggy when Jimbo got his contract, so what's libelous? He sounds like a rambling old man at this point. If William and Connolly actually file a suit for him I suspect that would tell what he's actually mad about. I also assume they would represent Woodard, not sure what Carville's standing could possibly be.

image.png.d256c4c9fa7e4f0f32a9506431ab2044.png

Yeah, why is Carville hiring W&C when the AD was libeled, if he was libeled.

Bizarro.

That said, if W&C files suit in Louisiana, they'll do everything in their power to neutralize the politics or tilt them in their favor.
