What I don’t understand is that our OL is dog shit but we don’t seem to be trying to scheme around that weakness. Our strategy seems to be to just keep on doing the same things and hope they magically get better so we can actually execute.

4 Top 10 teams lost yesterday and 9 Top 25 teams lost. Easily could've been 10 ranked teams losing. Texas is wasting a championship caliber defense, they had a bad game against UF but they've dominated in every other contest throughout the season. Collin Simmons hit his stride beginning in the OU game...he's been a wrecking ball with 5.5 sacks in 2 games. This is the best special teams unit Texas has had since I can remember. If Shipley was the kicker last season Texas would've won the SEC championship game where Bert choked and missed numerous field goals, he nearly blew the ASU game as well.

The OL is terrible. The run game is unreliable. Receivers aren't getting any king of consistent separation and dropping passes.  Arch doesn't look like a 5 star, he looks like an FCS  QB. Kentucky is the worst team in the SEC and it took overtime and some big returns on special teams to get past them. Where did things go wrong with this offense? Is it the scheme? Play calling? Recruiting misses? Is it largely on the QB? In 2010 Texas began the season ranked #5 and we all know the disappointment involving that cluster fuck of a season. This season hits differently because Texas opened as the preseason #1. Losing to Florida was the final nail in the coffin for playoff hopes, I don't foresee Texas winning out. This is shaping up to the most disappointing season of the modern era.

What year starts the “modern era”? We are 4 (or is it 5?) years removed from the worst back to back coaches in program history.

Receivers are open. They aren't the primary problem. It is Arch. He is bad. The line is bad too. But Arch would be bad with a good line.

This is what’s so infuriating. No this WR corps isn’t elite by any stretch. But they’re fine and have had plenty of chances and have made plays to get open.

we have a guy who just can’t hit them enough.

just like the morons blaming wingo for not catching a crosser that was thrown 3 feet behind him as he running full speed the opposite direction.  It was a hell of play to adjust envoy to get his fingers on the ball and attempt to catch it.

yes people blamed HIM for not catching it?  Most WRs wouldn’t.

It's sadly not that complex.

First, we had a lot of younger starters coming into this year. However, despite that fact Sark decided to run "NFL style" spring and summer drills which are essentially non-contact. The thought behind this is that it reduced chances for injury. It can work in the NFL because there is almost no season where a team places 3-5 starters on the OL. It doesn't work in college because OL is among the latest developing positions in college football. It also has some of the largest misses because the physical changes between 18-22 of men that large can great decrease or enhance their ability to execute the game plan. Second, because you don't get to see them in full speed contact drills it becomes nearly impossible to make the proper evaluations of growth and development among those type of players. As an important side note, the exact same is true of the QB position regarding growth and evaluation in college. If a QB isn't seeing real world speeds and pressures you can't evaluate his real world growth and ability.

That huge piece said, there is also a critical aspect of aligning your game plan to the skillset and abilities of your players. Because you can have wholesale changes at QB and skill positions in a single year and need to replace 3-5 starters on OL, what worked with one group of OL, one group of skill players and one QB may not work well or at all with an entirely different set of each. Texas faced all these save RB who we returned. If you haven't seen them in full speed practices in summer and fall camps it's absolutely impossible to make these adjustments because you can't evaluate the skills and abilities of the players.

So, you have to wait for actual games to see both these faults, weaknesses and strengths. Ohio State made them all very clear. However, despite that reality and given we then faced 3 teams we absolutely outmatched those adjustments were not nessecary in order to win convincingly. So, basically no changes were made to blocking scheme, passing or running game.

Which leads us to Florida. Sark is a very easy read for a competent DC and HC. His habits and play calls are extremely predictable. While Florida is a struggling team they do have talent physically on the defense. So, a coach who is about to get fired schemed against a predictable offensive game plan that our players couldn't execute very well. The result were exactly what you saw.

WHICH lead Sark to alter blocking schemes, QB play, RB play for OU. He simplified blocking from complex strategies and long developing WR routes to shorter routes, very non-complex down blocking schemes, shorter much quicker WR routes, alternative running lanes that were quick hitting and didn't make his young QB turn his back to the field.

It worked really well against a very good OU defense and Texas was greatly helped by an OU offense that could not do jack shit. So, in addition to a less complex scheme that our underdeveloped OL and young QB could better execute, fatigue on OU defense also helped.

Then came Kentucky where Sark went back to the complex blocking, longer WR routes, same predictable RB runs that also develop slowly and a coach who's not a complete idiot prepared for just that. Sark did it because just like the 3 crappy teams we played and incorrectly Florida he thought the talent would over come poor execute by the Texas players against a far less talented team physically in Kentucky.

It didn't. Sark will do the same against the next mid-tier opponent and then just shit the bed against quality ones.

It's what he does and it won't change.

Why did go away from what worked for OU? Cause he's a offensive genius of course. Ego comes before the fall.

Why do we look so bad?

Bad talent evaluation in recruiting, inability to evaluate the talent in spring and practice given NFL style approach, complex blocking schemes and long developing WR routes without the talent and abilities to execute them.

Edit- 3 important additional aspects. Sark does not create offensive game plans to align with the skillet of the player he has at his disposal. This is complicated by a clear inability to evaluate talent (partially due to the NFL practice) and just bad evaluation of talent. Second, Sark does NOT adjust to the defensive scheme of opponents. He doesn't take what the defense gives us, rather he tries to impose his will against defensive schemes, whether it is working or not.

What happened was you have a true freshman LG and a back center playing together for the first time.  Both had their first road start in their careers.  Robertson couldn’t block anyone and Brooks basically couldn’t handle any stunts and twists.   When you have a bad OL, try to simplify it.  Instead of having them go backwards and pass protect, have them go forward and push someone.  Except…. We have 1 running back on this entire fucking roster that can run and he’s beat up bc he’s a change of pace back that we have running inside.

Sark gets a fucking failing grade for the offense he has put together this season.  Wingo absolutely terrible.  I cannot believe Sark used him in the same breath as Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams.  He’s a jag that cannot get separation, has shitty hands, and is a shitty blocker.  DeAndre Moore is our veteran WR leader and he showed his poor IQ last night.  Endries can’t block for shit.  He got abused last night.  Arch can’t hit easy crossing routes, looks uncomfortable throwing a simple screen, and is mentally broken from the hits he has taken this season.

This offense is on par with the Charlie Strong/Shawn Watson experiment.  A total failure.  Sark needs to have play sheet stripped of him.  Get a legit OC.  Hit the portal hard.  Every position needs to be open to competition next year.  Get rid of guys that are eating up money like Baxter and Wingo.  You can’t produce? Then see ya later.  This is a fucking business now.  These players leave the minute they get a better offer.  On the flip end, they need to be “cut” if they can produce on the field whether it be injuries or just plain sucking.   And the offensive portal additions were fucking terrible.  Good thing we got Mosley who can’t do shit while teams like aggy got Conception and Craver… guys that can get separation and can catch.   Somehow, in year 5, we have a drastically worse offense than we had with fucking Casey Thompson in year 1.

Agree on everything. Why didn't we get some portal OL? Other teams can use 5* WR as starters, we can't? We have 3-4 of them... Boosters paid money for these guys. Play them. Shit, I paid money for them. Arch is a failed dream. He is terrible, move on. Caldwell, Lacey, Owens ... anyone that can hit an open route.  Arch is not it.  OL whatever, he misses people and goes for their feet on passes.

Project OL (huge humans that need years to maybe develop for OL) is not a good plan. Either lose a ton of weight or gain muscle/both. Not sure which is easier but damn it isn't working.

Fire Milwee - who even knows what he does. Get a real OC/QB coach. Try next year.

Or just put PK in charge. This man has his stuff together. If Sark can't pull his head out of his ass get PK someone on offense and let's roll. No Milwee.

Remember what happened to Ewers when Texas faced good D?

Is changing the QB gonna help the running game?

Is changing the QB gonna create quicker developing plays?

Are there issues with Arch absolutely. Is it delusional to think that changing QBs is gonna fix the shit show of an offensive game plan. Absolutely. Will benching Arch potentially fuck up current and future QB commits? Absolutely. Will it lead to Arch entering the portal to find a OC and HC that know how to actually create an offensive game plan that aligns to his talent? Quite possibly. Will it make Texas look even worse among the talking heads, prospect recruits and others if we bench a Manning for a guy who didn't start at Troy and we continue to flounder due to an inept OC and offensive game plan? 100%

Is it frustrating, yes. But I'm telling you, making the switch to a backup who didn't start at Troy until the last 5 games of their season are going to wreak havoc on Texas long term and Texas still isn't winning shit regardless of who plays at QB cause Sark will still be running the offense. We couldn't win big with all the talent last year and a QB who is now in the NFL. If you think running in a scrub from Troy is going to make this offense suddenly flow you're delusional and you also don't grasp the long term damage it will do to Texas. But hey, that's Longhorn fans, the back up is always better and a fix for all that ails us.

Is it worth potentially losing current QBs below the wunderkind from Troy and possibly the commitment from Dia Bell? Is it worth becoming the laughing stock of all college football for benching Arch, clearly admitting our OC and HC suck at QB evaluation and development?

For what? Do you really think bridging in any of them gets us to the playoff? An NC run?

This right here is the Sark way.

Same thing people were saying with Ewers constantly missing deep shots or the god awful ballerina twirl play that always got blown up. But Sark did it and asked his players to do it over and over and over.

And this isn't a QB rant.

Sark is arrogant, oblivious and blind to the actual talent, or lack of talent, he has.

It is precisely where coaching shows up most. Leadership is "easy" when you have on-field talent and leaders.

Without incredible and smart athletes it boils down to training, excellent plans and eliciting execution of those plans.

It's how certain coaches always got great results with "weak" recruiting. They had a plan and could make it happen.

Sark can't do it. He's, what, 3-8 vs top 10 teams? And that's only because Venables is quite possibly a bigger moron.

Maybe it comes together if he keeps pounding the square pegs into the round holes. It just doesn't look that way.

Arch isn't the mistake. Sark is and sadly there is no immediate fix. We could bring in an OC mid season but it takes time to fix all the damage Sark has done already. Sooner rather than later is best, imo, will CDC force it after Kentucky, I doubt it. Had we lost, maybe, but the clock is ticking and sadly I think the additional losses we are nearly guaranteed to see are what will ultimately make CDC force Sark to give up control of the offense completely.

Hate that it's that bleak but it's the only answer I see.

Well, if they had scored a TD, they would have won the game, that much is crystal clear.  We weren't going to score a TD in OT absent extraordinary luck.

But why not wait until another OT to do that?  Because against our DL, that was a very low-percentage play.  There is a line of thinking, though, that if you can't punch it in from the 1, you should just quit football.  See, eg, every surly game thread with the ball on the 1 in the last five years, but especially against UGa and tOSU, where the odds are also pretty slim.

Well, I obviously don't know for certain CDC will press this issue. What I do know for certain is that the expectation at Texas are a competent and well run offense and consistency of production. Additionally, making the CFP is now basically being at top 15 program. So SEC championship contention and consistent CFP is the low bar expectation of any staff at Texas given the NIL, facilities and brand value. College football is now, more than ever, a business. CDC is ultimately responsible for all sports and football is the cash cow. Not taking care of nor meeting expectations in that realm will absolutely lead to questions about his ability to run the Texas athletics program. I've found in life the surest way to motivate an executive leader into action is potential threat of losing his job. Not forcing Steve to give up control of the offense won't lead to immediate issues for CDC, however they will absolutely ultimately lead to Sark getting shit canned and CDC being severely questioned for not taking action sooner as we head into yet another coaching search. CDC might make that process but if Texas next HC isn't winning (WINNING) an NC within a year or two CDC will be shit canned next. So... that's how business works and to be clear Texas Athletics is absolutely a business, a very lucrative one with shit tons of eyes watching.

Lol, when Saban benched Milroe he had already won 7 national championships at Alabama. Saban also won the SEC in 2023 when he benched Milroe. Turns out Milroe was a great player BTW. Not for nothing but how many years after benching Milroe was Saban at Alabama? Zero is the answer. Do you know when Saban benched Milroe? After the Texas loss. Do you know what Milroe numbers were in 2023?

Spoiler

In his 2023 season, Jalen Milroe had 187 completions on 284 attempts for 2,834 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He also rushed for 531 yards on 161 carries and scored 12 touchdowns. His 2023 performance included an SEC title and an appearance in the College Football Playoff

Do you know what Saban’s record was in the SEC? 8-0

Did you know Saban lost only to Texas and eventually national champion Michigan in 2023?

Did you know Milroe started that national championship game against Michigan?

If you think there are parallels between Nick Saban benching Milroe at Bama and Sark benching Arch at Texas, it's only in your delusional mind.

When did our OL recruiting fail us?  We know we need 2-3 5* linemen each year to bring in, redshirt and build up to prepare them.  Somewhere in the last couple of years our recruiting failed us, since we don’t have enough good players who can block well enough in this league.   Without good OL, we can’t implement an offensive plan.

When did our OL recruiting fail us?  We know we need 2-3 5* linemen each year to bring in, redshirt and build up to prepare them.  Somewhere in the last couple of years our recruiting failed us, since we don’t have enough good players who can block well enough in this league.   Without good OL, we can’t implement an offensive plan.

you aren't going to get 2-3 5* OL each year.  this is completely unreasonable.  you can get 1 each year and some 4 stars would be fine.  we rode "big humans, stars don't matter" after the initial haul.

Flood needs to go.

rewatching the game.  I can say that I do love that the Stoops dickeater brothers have to chew on this loss for a whole week.

with 5 left in the 4th, they are yelling at the ref and arguing with each other.   I will take solace in the fact, they are miserable fucks this morning.

There is always a silver lining to all dark clouds and bringing gloom to any Stoops is always a bright spot.

That it's coupled with Venables pain from last week all the better.

What I don’t understand is that our OL is dog shit but we don’t seem to be trying to scheme around that weakness. Our strategy seems to be to just keep on doing the same things and hope they magically get better so we can actually execute.

Any coaching staff can scheme to minimize or hide a positional weakness and win games, but it takes true courage and borders of greatness to scheme to expose and highlight a positional weakness and still win games.

That or you are stubborn as fuck and it is not merely Sark, Gary did that shit for the last 4 years of his tenure in Ft Worth and then tell people at post game press conferences the staff simply needed to coach'em up.

also, how the fuck did they miss the facemask on the last KO? even the announcers didn't say anything.

watch Sark.  He's flumoxed.  he starts talking to the ref but the ref completely ignores him and after about 5 seconds he moves on.

I realize there was only one second left in the game but work the refs...

What year starts the “modern era”? We are 4 (or is it 5?) years removed from the worst back to back coaches in program history.

And neither one of those guys gave us 1997 or 2010.
