A Few Good Men is one my most favorite movies of all time. Thank you Mr. Reiner.

From the interwebs...

"a very recent article that said Rob Reiner and his son Nick had a loud argument -- unspecified what the argument was about -- at Conan O'Brien's Christmas Party on Saturday night and Rob and Michele ended up leaving early because of it. It also stated no one is sure at the present time if Nick left at the same time they did. At some point, however, Nick came home and slit their throats."

RIP to one of the greats.  The below episode from All in the Family is what I think of when I remember Rob Reiner.  His movies were incredible also whether he wrote them, directed them or even acted in them.

That was excellent.  Literall laugh out loud.  I guess I need to watch some of this show.  Is there a best of?

Yes.  The entire series.

Seems like Nick was fairly unsuccessful with his showbiz career. He called himself a writer but his only IMDB writing credit looks to be a movie that Rob directed and it doesn't sound like a stretch that Rob made that movie happen. But maybe Nick did something else with his life as well.

Rob’s other son Jake was a reporter with the Houston NBC station for a few years. If you were aware of it, you couldn’t help but remind yourself of his background when he was reporting on a road closure or standing knee deep in water during a hurricane. I believe he finally quit to follow his family legacy in show business.

Yeah he seemed like a solid dude, I never realized it was his son for the longest time because he never mentioned it or acted like someone with a famous father.  He was a good sport about the Astros beating the Dodgers as I think he’s a big Dodgers fan.

I had no idea Albert Brooks' given name was Albert Einstein. That's pretty funny. According to wikipedia: "By the age of 19, he had changed his professional name to Albert Brooks, joking that "the real Albert Einstein changed his name to sound more intelligent."

My God... I wonder how Conan is going to figure out a way to pull laughs out of this.

Always disliked how they had Mike eventually leaving Gloria to join a commune with one of his female students. I know that Reiner chose not to join the Gloria spinoff but you don’t have to ruin the character because of an actor’s choice. Very different from McLean Stevenson leaving MASH.

I started to watch Spinal Tap 2 last night and was watching Rob Reiner use a rack of films to hold himself up and thought about how old he must be, but it still kind of surprised me and made me a little sad that all the old greats are really old and I’m getting old too. I ended up turning it off to watch something else, it was late and decided I didn’t want to likely fall asleep to a movie I wanted to see. Seeing this news this morning was a shock to say the least.

The best part of getting older is you’re still here experiencing life. I have a friend who is a comedian that made a joke about that once during a show that was basically “I’m 20 years older than you, but if I died today I got to experience so much more life than you.” It was a lot more to it than that, but basically getting older is cool.

It sucks that Rob and his wife had their lives cut short, but what a 78 years he had on this planet. He impacted millions of people in a good way and he left behind a fantastic legacy of who he was as a person, not to even mention what he accomplished in his professional life.

Adding to the Conan information: https://www.tmz.com/2025/12/15/rob-reiner-son-nick-conan-obrien-christmas-party/#continued

Rob & Michele Reiner MurdersSon Nick Seemed Out of Place at Conan's Xmas Party

So, someone posted that Reiner's last IMBD entry is Conan's podcast and says 2025, and it is in fact there. I've been listening to the podcast pretty much every episode for a little over a year now. It looks like Reiner's last appearance was with Albert Brooks in 2023, so he may have done a recording very recently and has not yet been published. They usually publish several weeks after they are recorded. That would be even more tragic. Conan can be a very serious person about certain things and I can't imagine the decsion on how to handle it if his podcast really was Reiners last recorded appearance.

I've read some stuff in the last day where it sounds like the Reiners carried a lot of guilt about the way they had handled their son's addiction and mental issues.  They clearly had taken hard lines (with the support of professional opinions) in the past with tales of him living homeless across the country, etc so maybe they were trying a different, more inclusive/softer approach....it is strange though.

Why would you take your 32 year old loser junkie son to a big wig Hollywood party?

It’s not clear he did.  Maybe the kid showed up on his own.  Even so, normalcy and a healthy relationship can seem so tantalizingly close with a loved one battling addiction.  No matter how many times they fail you, you think this might be the time it sticks.  It’s gut wrenching how bad you want it for them.  It makes a fool out of you again and again.  Some people can shut the door forever, some can’t.

Eyewitnesses who saw Nick check in say he seemed "tweaked out", but there were no visible signs he had been in a violent confrontation -- we're told definitely no blood stains or cuts on his body.

The reservation was made for just a day, but Nick never formally checked out.

When the staff came into his room later Sunday morning, they found the shower "full of blood" and blood on the bed.

The whole thing just sucks. Getting all of the details will take time and it will probably make it more heart-wrenching for the family to see what led to this. Senseless violence like this is, well, don’t have the words to say how sad it is.

Yeah, that is a terrible awful thing to deal with.  The answer is almost always the hard line.  I'd say always, because it's probably correct.  But absolutes make me nervous.

My beloved mentioned it assuming that I already knew. Rob Reiner died. I'm surprised and saddened. He was stabbed to death with his wife. I'm touched to the core by the horror. I reacted similarly to the death of Phil Hartman. It feels so personal.

And by their son. They know this as they die.

We only know persons such as these by their public personas. Reiner's shined.

You take him with you because you feel like you can keep him safe from himself if he’s with you.
