First cannabis-friendly hotel in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - The Lexi Las Vegas officially opens this Friday, branded as the first and only cannabis-friendly hotel in Las Vegas.

Elevations Hotels and Resorts has transformed what was once known as the Artisan hotel, off Sahara and the I-15, into The Lexi Las Vegas.

It’s a 21-and-over, non-gaming boutique hotel with a total of 64 rooms, but only about 22 of those rooms will allow cannabis consumption.

“When you do this, you have to make sure that you’re very cognizant of what the law is,” said Daron Brotherton, COO of Elevations Nation. “We are not in the cannabis business. We are simply cannabis-friendly tourism.”

The law says cannabis can be consumed in a private dwelling or at a business that holds a license for a cannabis lounge.

According to both the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board and the hotel’s ownership group, The Lexi does not have a cannabis lounge license, which is why there will be no marijuana allowed in the public areas.

However, the CEO of Elevations Hotels and Resorts Alexandre Rizk said that a reserved hotel room is considered a private dwelling, which is why guests can consume cannabis inside their rooms only.

“These are all very new laws, and as they evolve, we want to be part of the discussion, and hopefully we can get to a place where we have certain areas of the public areas where it is possible to consume cannabis safely, but until then, it’s not going to be possible,” said Rizk.

The Lexi will also have a special air filtration system in every room to get rid of any lingering marijuana scent.

The plan follows a concept similar to another cannabis-friendly Elevations hotel located in Phoenix, which the company said has been well-received.

“On the very first day, I want to say we had almost 360 phone calls looking to make reservations with us, and then that demand has sort of never really extinguished,” said Brotherton. “There is a huge market for cannabis-friendly hotels in this country, for sure.”

Funny. That’s pretty much what I keep telling my hosts when they ask for my thoughts on my experience.

Every time it goes pretty much like this:

”While I fully recognize that this is a business,  and that until such time as UNICEF gets into gambling, there is no charity. However you still need to make the customer feel like the money they lost at least had entertainment value. If I come in with a grand, and it’s gone in 90 minutes or less, I feel very taken advantage of. How much did I get to play in that 90 minutes?

OTOH, if I had played 4 or more hours on that same thousand and still lost, I would feel much more entertainment value and more likely to keep coming back for the time being.”

Some nights it just isn’t your night. I get that for sure. That is significantly different than squeezing every nickel out of every bet you can, as quickly as you can.

Memorial Day weekend the Venetian/Palazzo had table games at $25 minimums pretty much the whole weekend. They would have $15 tables during the day up until around 2-3PM.

Wynn had $50 minimums and so did Caesars.

Lost a good $900 at Caesars Sunday during the day and another $500 at night at palazzo. Thankfully I was able to recoup it all and then some on Monday before leaving at the Venetian.

Where’s the Guess Which Hand and Go Fish casino?

When I lived in Mississippi I really enjoyed the convivial atmosphere of the boats vs the ever growing fuckery of the Strip. This was in the mid 90’s so it’s worse. The dealers were friendly and helped explain stuff to folks at the craps tables, which most were $5 mins and 3x odds. Throwing down a couple $100 bills on the table would get you decent dinners and plenty of drinks, and during the week maybe a room. We could drive over to Vicksburg and have a fun evening and make a little or lose a little but it was fun.

Now when I go to Vegas I just want to get through the casinos as fast as possible. Not much fun, mostly folks at the slots just pushing the button rapidly like rats with an electrode in their brain.

Had a terrible casino experience at Atlantis around 96. Fucking casino table was stealing from players by underpaying odds and short paying prop bets. My boss first noticed and we pulled out; the floor boss didn’t give a shit. I was there with a big sales meeting full of near degenerate gamblers and word got around and no one was playing.

Just booked my flight for next Wednesday.  Playing in WSOP tag-team event with my dad.  Staying at Paris but will most likely be heading elsewhere for non-poker gambling.  Where are the best places to play BJ not on the strip?

Ellis Island casino. It’s right behind Paris/Bally’s. $5 minimum with 3/2 payouts and friendly dealers. When you go, see if they are running any promotions to get a players card.

I saw the Ellis Island post. I've not played there, but my go to is El Cortez downtown. Old school place with a fresh haircut. Lots of history there. 3/2 payout with $5 min as well.

Ha!  Wife and I visited Vegas last spring for our honeymoon.  When we left, we marked it off the bucket list and figured we wouldn't be back.

Except for that we just booked a trip for mid-July to take the boys.

And, we just booked another trip for December to celebrate my daughter finishing up her MBA.

Damn good steak-and-eggs breakfast there too.

Also, don't get in a cab or uber anywhere around the strip. Holy shit is traffic awful with the repaving.

Got stuck behind MGM about 50 cars deep at a light that 0-2 cars got through each cycle. I got out and walked to the hotel.

Don't stay at the Polo towers. Construction all around and have to walk a lot to get to strip.

Had Javier’s and Piero’s on Thursday and neither disappointed. The Queso Fundido at Javier’s might be the best I’ve had and the Veal Parmesan topped with eggplant at Piero’s is one of my favorite dishes anywhere.

Went to Mon Ami Gabi for breakfast yesterday and they’ve lost their fastball. Second straight visit where we felt like there was nothing terrific about the meal. Will not be going back in the fall.

Beauty & Essex for the first time last night. It was excellent, but it’s inherently designed for larger parties. It’s a great choice as an alternative to a steak house for steak night in Vegas. Everything we had, caviar hamachi/bone marrow/lobster bao/spaghettini/filet/mac and cheese - all of it was terrific. Great rec from the board.

Doing Bardot and LeCirque for the full French experience in Vegas today. Love both places.

Here now for the wsop
I bought blackjack news for the trip. In addition to Ellis Island best rules with <$25 tables:

Downtown:

  • California
  • El Cortez
  • Freemont
  • Plaza

near strip:

  • Gold Coast
  • Orleans
  • Palace Station
  • south point
  • tropicana

Somewhat close to downtown (couple miles north) and certainly not near the Strip - Jerry's Nugget.

Just locals, no frills, low mins, quite the interesting spot. Went for the first time last summer. Definitely going back again this summer. But probably during daylight hours.

Did a little blackjack tour around downtown.

Went to Freemont first. Got absolutely drilled. Lost 14 of the first 15 hands. Deck got huge in the positive direction, lost every single big bet. I really don't remember the dealer getting anything but 20 or 21. Ended up down $195 in less than 15 minutes. I've never really thought I've been cheated playing blackjack, but this dealer had me thinking.

Walked over to California. Lost $100 in less than 5 minutes. Pulled out another $100, got down to $30 before building it back to $125 and left down $75.

Went to El Cortez. They had single deck $15 table. Table seemed normal, no 7-15 hands in a row lost like the other places. Got 2 hands out of each deck, got 3 when we were down to 2 players. Was ranging bets from $15-$50 and getting stared down from pit boss. Played for about an hour and left up $140.

If you want to play poker go to MGM. Easiest tables I've been at outside of Tulsa.

If by "history", you mean a lot of bodies leaving in the trunks of lincolns and caddys, I agree with you.

Lulz Somebody getting fired.

Man posing as Las Vegas hotel owner steals more than $1M in casino con job

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man is accused of posing as a Las Vegas hotel owner and convincing a casino employee to give him more than $1 million in bogus payments for fire safety equipment, documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Monday said.

Erik Gutierrez, 23, is charged with theft of more than $100,000, records said.

On June 17, Las Vegas Metro police responded to the Circa Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas for a report of a possible scam, documents said. A person from the hotel’s security office told detectives “an unknown person” had contacted the casino cage “claiming to be the owner of the hotel” and asking for $320,000 for an emergency payment to the fire department, police wrote in court documents.

Police interviewed the cage supervisor, who said they received a phone call from a person who claimed they were the hotel’s owner. The person, who was not the hotel’s owner, said “the fire department needed to do a check on the fire extinguishers” and “they would need a payment for further safety devices,” documents said.

The cage supervisor brought the money in four installments to the unknown person at different off-site locations, documents said. The payments totaled $314,000, $350,000, and $500,000, plus three smaller deposits, resulting in a loss of $1,170,000 to the hotel, documents said. The employee believed she was on the phone with the hotel’s owner and texting with her manager, police said.

Documents also indicate she believed she was meeting with the hotel owner’s attorney.

Detectives tracked the vehicle involved in the suspected theft, finding its registered owner. Police suspect the car belonged to Gutierrez’s aunt with whom he lives.

Police also surveilled the home, seeing a different car arrive and then leave with Gutierrez and another man in it. Police searched the car, finding no money it it.

Around the same time, police obtained a search warrant of the home, finding identification belonging to Gutierrez, a “large bag of U.S. currency bundled together with the name Circa written on the bundle,” and other items, they said.

Police arrested Gutierrez at a gym on Sunday, June 18, they said. They later recovered nearly $850,000. Police did not know as of the writing of his arrest report last week who was given the outstanding $314,000, they said. Another man in the car with Gutierrez before his arrest was not detained.

Judge Amy Ferreira set Gutierrez’s bail at $25,000 and ordered him to stay away from Circa and the Fremont Street Experience if he posts bond, documents said.

“Although I love a good PR story, this isn’t one of them,” Derek Stevens, CEO of Circa, said in a statement. “Circa Resort & Casino is cooperating with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in this investigation. We greatly appreciate their efforts to date and cannot comment further due to an ongoing investigation.”

How in the hell can an employee just leave the cage with $500k of cash? I can't believe they don't have multiple checks in place before cash is removed from the cage.

Seriously.  That is unbelievable

heading out there labor day weekend.  playing golf for the first time in the area and landed on Bali Hai since it's really close to the Aria where i am staying.  Any thoughts on that place?  Guys I am playing with are hackers so did not want to go someplace too fancy or stuffy.  Just want to have good time.  Any other tracks around there fit that bill?

Aria had a pretty good deal for 3 nights for $240 all in (plus $100 in credit).

Here's a bit more on the robbery. Looks like they hit 3 casinos and the money went offshore by bitcoin.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A scheme to dupe casino employees into thinking they were transferring money from cages to a legitimate business involves at least three casinos and Mexican phone numbers, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned.

Documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Friday reveal the allegations involve thefts at Circa Hotel & Casino, Eureka Casino Resort in Mesquite and the Golden Nugget in Laughlin — as well as federal investigators, including the U.S. Secret Service.

So, this trip to Vegas should be interesting. We've been traveling on vacation all summer to different places, but I had an AA ticket credit that expires in a few months. So, there was only a few day window to use it when we were available, in late July. The only destination that really worked for flights, etc. was Vegas. So we booked that.

However, we don't gamble, except for sports betting, and there aren't any interesting shows we wanted to see during those days, so we are going to fly-in, stay away from the strip and wing it with other activities. Eat at some nice restaurants, do a little sports book betting, sit by the pool, etc. We are only there two and a half days. Doesn't cost us much, so why not.

I really enjoyed Bali Hai when I played it a couple of years ago. It’s not terribly challenging and fairly wide open.

Bali Hai is great if you aren’t a real serious golfer (I’m not). The convenience can’t be beat, but it’s a party course. I’ve played a couple of rounds there that got pretty backed up and slow, but a cart girl comes buy often and it’s a decent enough course with some fun holes.

Good to know and appreciate the Intel.   Should be perfect for us
