Perry wouldn't have beaten Obama in 2012, but fun fact---the most predominant reason he wasn't the GOP frontrunner/nominee was because of our former AD Mike Perrin's wife---Melinda Perrin.  A very popular GOP governor in a deep red state (at the time anyway) who was given bullshit credit for our booming economy (relative to the rest of the nation, anyway) who didn't really have much going against him outside of Texas (until of course, the rest of the nation heard him speak).  But think about what a safe pick he was with so much going for him (falsely, but he knew how to take credit for him).  But he fucked with UT in the two years before that, and Melinda and a few others took it upon themselves to systematically one-by-one go to every one of his donors in Texas and make them understand that he fucked with UT and therefore would limp into the Republican primary with few resources, no champions, no track record, no friends, a minister without portfolio.  They spent two years destroying every friendship he had with any UT alumni in our state and it cost him dearly.  He should have been the big deal from the big red state with the big checkbook.  Instead, he "waltzed" in with a drug problem, a shitty memory, and the staying power of his boyfriend's off-brand Cialis pill.

Yeah, I'm sure that was a reason, but the predominant one?

I think the predominant one is that he's an idiot.

Oops.

The regents decided not to renew Young's (current president) contract so it will expire this spring in April or thereabouts. I could see Perry returning to do that, but the grads/former students that I know are not fond of him and like @Asithappens think Perry is an idiot, albeit good at profiting off of connections. In addition to the state's population increases placing pressure upon higher ed capacities, my spouse has asserted that the reasoning behind A&M's massive enrollment is to create a groundswell of alumni that overwhelm other schools and force policy changes that favor A&M. I asserted that numbers only equal power up to a point.

I don't want him, I would much rather have Gates come back. But, with his college roommate as chancellor, it's possible.

Does "also my friend" mean the same thing to Trump as it means to Perry?  Assuming all scrotums are shorn.

This seems like the best thread to discuss:

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/471868-rick-perry-says-trump-is-the-chosen-one

When you start to equate a ruler has the power of God behind them, I don't see how this is any different than a fundamentalist Muslim sect that believes their leader only speaks the word of God. And if you truly believe that, you should be willing to do whatever they say without question. It's God ordering you.

Also weird that apparently Perry said the same about Obama in that interview. I guess some really believe that everything is pre-ordained. I find that logic impossible to comprehend or decide where it starts or stops. Who's to say then that God didn't put Adam Schiff in place to get Trump out because God doesn't want Trump in the 2020 election. Or maybe God put Jim Jordan there to defeat Schiff.

It's just arrogant to say that you have interpreted God's will.

The only difference between American evangelicals and ISIS is another 10 years of radicalization.

Just finished watching "The Family" on the Netflix.  This is one of their themes and it plays in nicely to the "prosperity gospel" as well.

My response to all this nonsense is that, so I guess Hitler was chosen by God, too. so all is well.

If the response is, "no, Hitler was the Devil's work," then just reply that Stalin, FDR and liberalism must have been heaven sent to meet that threat.

The cross-grift between the GOP, Trump, Murdoch's media outlets, and lobbyists is so over the top now, I really just have to think Mel Brooks at 93 years old is scribbling away on a script. The problem is, I don't know if he can top this.

Last time, there was at least one decent human being and his family worth saving.

I don't think we can clear that bar this time around.

Those who use religion as a tool to further their personal ambitions are the virus. Religion is neither good nor bad. It's what you do with it.

Anyone who claims God cares about politics should be put in a barrel and dumped in the Marianna Trench. Amen.

Just for shits and giggles, I looked up the syllabus.  Here's how that class is taught nowadays in all its glory:

You all remember when modern democracy started?  Most of the Europe and their colonies believed that governments were led by divine right.  It was a great way to provide moral context and justification for some random asshole having power over everyone else.  It rationalized all sorts of abuses, that would be defended to the death by the backers of the monarchs.  Checks and balances are just an affront to God's will.

Minority rule doesn't work without it.

Maybe Perry just read this book?......

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TXBVK7M/ref=nodl_

51QzfqUwyNL.jpg

Quote

In 2016 God raised up Donald Trump to lead America at a pivotal time. Evangelicals who recognized this backed him more than any other presidential candidate in history. Heading into 2020, the stakes in his reelection are even higher. This election, nine months after this book releases, is a new fight for the soul of America. Stephen E. Strang makes the case that God wants America to be great because God has raised up America—beginning with our Founding Fathers—to be a beacon of light and hope for the world. We’ve been the nation with religious liberty that has supported those who have spread the gospel around the world.

In this book Strang looks at the election, Trump, and America from a spiritual perspective and helps Christians (and others) see God’s hand at work. This book is as much about God and His purposes as about Donald Trump. But it is also an articulate, impassioned apologetic about why all Christians must support this imperfect president, because he has God’s blessing and because the destiny of America is riding on his reelection. This book also explores why he might lose, if his base is overconfident and doesn’t vote or if his opponents are dishonest enough to steal the election.

God, Trump, and the 2020 Election is an inside look at how the political climate is affected by  spiritual warfare—an important subject for Bible-believing Christians. The satanic schemes are so brazen on key issues that the book was written to explain what’s at stake. Strang believes that the intersection of faith and politics needs to be part of the national discussion about the division in our country.

hmm, I'm thinking Mr Strang hasn't actually read what the founders had to say about religion. God we are a fucking stupid, ignorant country.

Remember, stupidity and wickedness always win in the end.  They have the numbers and the staying power.  It's great to fight the good fight, and occasionally, decency takes a lead, but it doesn't last.

There’s a good bit of biblical precedent of God putting people under the rule of evil rulers as a judgment against them. Considering how Trump embodies the worst of our culture, there’s a certain logic to that explanation. Even if God chose Trump, that doesn’t mean God endorses him.

The fact that someone as reprehensible as Trump has been widely celebrated by certain groups of Christians should be cause for mourning and repentance.

We thought the Nazis lost WWII.  Turns out they just took a break.

We thought the USSR lost the Cold War.  Turns out they NEVER took a break.

We thought that racism was fading into the background here in the US.  Turns out it was just hiding so long as social convention said it should.

They've all won.  You can't ever beat them.

You are ignoring the rust chole reference. The reality is the fight against darkness never ever ends. That’s why you can’t just give up and throw in the towel. Because then it really is over.

Didn't see all of True Detective. I probably should, but the wife can't handle that sort of show.

And yes, I agree -- absolutely always fight, never quit.  I'm a big fan of raging against the dying of the light and all that.  I think "defiance" is one of the greatest words in the language.  I"m just a realist.

Hell, I'm old enough to remember when images like this were sent around on fax machine chain communications:

Fuck em.  Fuck em till the end.  I hope they fucking choke on all of the wealth and power they're shoveling down their gullets as fast as they can.  I just don't have any illusions about the power dynamic.

Apologies, and later posts made it clear I was having a synapse fail, but for a minute there I thought you were talking about cinchona and the Inca king. If Trump suffers from dysentery, there would be a nice circle of life theme going, so there is that.

There’s no actual work stuff in that folder and that’s a terrible suit.

The jacket and pants don’t match and it’s ill fitting.
