Just had a lengthy father's day video call from my soldier from the Poland/Ukraine border. We will be smoking a brisket and having a long talk within 45 days. He admitted that he's seen some shit beyond his wildest imagination and that it's going to take a while to mentally unpack some of the things he witnessed.14 points

I took that to mean after he was done with clinic dad thought dad could coordinate a high school defense but maybe that’s wrong.14 points

In 15 minutes you guys will be passed out drunk, so I'll just sum it up this way as fast as I can that this is the most humiliating thread in the last fucking 10 years that I've been involved with on Longhorn message boards. How the fuck can you be worried about playing Texas A&M?! How can you do that? What the fuck is that about?!14 points

They should. My past 20 years in corporate America was year after year of watching people getting fucked over. And that’s coming from someone that greatly benefited from the system. People are treated as numbers on a balance sheet, and the core values are a PR sham. My advice to young peoples Get what you can while you can. Don’t drink the koolaid11 points

I'm friends with the pilot and his wife is a colleague of my wife so this hits really fucking close to home. He primarily flies helos so I was a little shocked to hear he was involved in any way. Apparently the plane had just undergone maintenance and he was performing a test flight when he experienced engine failure. The only injury he sustained was mild smoke inhalation.9 points

I got to do another one of those XX extreme racing experiences last week in Detroit. I rode a hot lap in a Hellcat and then got to take an R8 and a 911 GT3 RS on the track. They were both lots of fun but the 911 is exceptional. It’s hard to learn to trust the cars at the limit in the corners, there’s just so much grip. On the way out I saw the rarest car I’ve ever seen in my life.8 points

Wow, was I wrong. You aren't a Putin apologist, you are a full fledged acolyte. First, not everyone in Donetsk and Luhansk wanted to separate. The Russians moved in to reinforce the minority who wanted to separate from Ukraine. Second, he has taken a large portion of the Donbas region, but has yet to prove that he can hold it. The Ukrainians have shown that holding it will be difficult, at least. Third, the war is far from over. It isn't over until Ukraine submits. They have shown no inclination to do so, so you need to recalibrate your evaluation. Fourth, ignoring Russian aggression will have tremendous consequences, intended and otherwise. Every action has unintended consequences; that is no excuse to remain inactive in the face of the same type and stated scope of aggression the world last saw from Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo. Finally, spending money we don't have is the American pastime. You just don't like that it isn't being spent the way you want it spent. I would rather oppose Putin's authoritarianism and aggression now by helping Ukraine than later by fighting Russians with American fighting men after he has had time to rearm after you and your ilk remove sanctions.7 points

I think Putin lost his strategic goals the moment he sent troops across the border. Even if they had mopped up in a couple of weeks his strategic goal to rebuild the USSR 2.0 was going to be a long time failure. The results would have been a regalvanized NATO, a pissed Ukrainian populace that would have to be policed for years, plus all the other sunk costs for the war. All to have the same inevitable economic collapse vs the west. What we are fighting for now is just trying to accelerate the decline of an aging empire and making a point that naked power grabs are not to be tolerated. The Russian casualties are definitely encouraging. This is going to boil down to the Battle of the Benches. Whoever can organize and train up the JV team is going to make the difference. My concern the past few weeks is just not hearing enough about the UA reinforcements. And that their most experienced front lines may have getting ground down hard too. If we can start to see consistent gains in Kherson then I could be more confident, it's just tough to be patient when people's lives are on the line.7 points

I'm sorry, that wasn't a full answer to your question earlier. Actually, I'm very pleased at our response (and that of NATO's and the EU's). No Americans are dying, and this should stop Putin's future endeavors in trying to take over more countries. I think it's about as good as we can do, given how fast this spun up, and Putin has ironically justified NATO's existence. Back in February, most of us believed that Russia would be west of the Dniper in March and that we'd be supplying an insurgency. Instead, Ukraine is fighting Russia head-on, and Ukraine has punched well above their weight class. It's helped that the Russians are so incredibly incompetent and poorly-trained, but having conscripts for just a year does that. Like I said several times back in February/March, having been in the US Army back in the early 90s, I really had it in my head that the Soviets and then Russians would be tough to crack on the battlefield. Instead, they seem to be more interested in living and looting Ukraine than anything else. If I had a complaint, it's that we should be supplying Ukraine with more artillery (up to and including MLRS) and maybe putting PATRIOT systems into the hands of Ukrainians for use in Western Ukraine, and that we should be trying to help with training more of their typical rank-and-file soldiers in Poland or Romania. Language barriers could be overcome with translators, and we have really solid instructors in the US military that could help train up their infantry.6 points

I listened to Craig on the drive from my parents house in Gainesville until my stop for the day in Albuquerque. So we lost—to aggy—at the CWS—to send us home. It’s not that big of a deal. and here’s why… I learned years ago that beating Texas in anything is the aggy wet dream. It’s their life, their everything. Texas, on the other hand, wins championships. That’s what makes us jumpier than a virgin at a prison rodeo. I started my “Pancho reply” to aggy about a decade ago anytime they crow to me that they beat us in something: “and yet still no National Championships.” aggy has never won a NC in baseball. aggy has never made it past the S16 in basketball. aggy hasn’t won a football title in 83 years. so we lost to them today and I, like most of you, got throw it in your face texts from aggy friends. My reply: “congrats…and yet still no national championships.” their reply, like always: *silence*6 points

For those that are new to the game of baseball and tune in for 2 weeks a year: the best team wins maybe 20% of the championships and 2 games don't define seasons/legacy. This is evident by USC winning 12 championships and finishing 2nd zero times. Meanwhile we have 6 championships and 6 2nd place finishes. It's all about luck and matchups in June.6 points

I want to come to this analysis, because it’s extremely important for understanding the limitations we are facing in trying to arm Ukraine— while at the same time I am not sure that his conclusions are completely accurate even if his diagnoses is. The unfolding war in Ukraine is bizarre— a non-nuclear serious military squaring off against a nuclear armed great/regional power, with constrained assistance from a nuclear superalliance. Putin is resistant to dipping into his nuke arsenal because he thinks he can win conventionally and is hesitant to shatter the first use norm. The terrain and doctrine of both militaries trend to long-haul, high intensity warfare. It is difficult to see any scenario where the U.S./Alliance squares off in a hot war over territory with the only near-peer competitors: Russia and China— that does not either get turned off quick one way or another or go nuclear before industrial bases come into play. There really isn’t. Taiwan would be an an access denial air and sea battle and if China gets a beachhead and supply chain in place— it’s over. Russia on NATO territory is either hammered back in the opening rounds or the nukes start flying. That hasn’t changed from the Cold War at least. So it’s entirely rational for the West to focus on a different way of war and industrial base, as our whole game plan is just to be such a tough nut that no one dares to step over the line. I do not see high-intensity warfare between nuclear powers as realistic in the future. Which puts us in a tough spot when it comes to arming the Ukrainians for that kind of extended fight. Sorry for long posting.6 points

Update for any of the hunters on this thread. Tuesday I should have a US address where they are collecting gear for individual troops. My idea is Adopt a Grunt. Monday I have a few friends coming over and we are going to make individual medical kits with some of the shit I have stored. Specific request was for pouches, backpacks, boots and summer weight camo. Will pass on the address when I get it. Verified source who has been cited on this thread. Anyone got any extra longhorn patches or stickers? Would love to see them on a UA troop.6 points

How many different times has Uvalde PD changed their story? I've lost track. Originally they claimed the shooter was fired upon or "engaged" before entering the school. Then we found out that was a lie and that there was an officer present but he decided to just let the dude waltz into the school. Originally they claimed he was able to enter the school because an exterior door was propped open and therefore it was all a dead teacher's fault. Then we found out that was a complete lie and that the teacher slammed the door shut before the shooter entered the building. Originally they claimed -- well I don't remember exactly what they said at the press conference with Governor Wheels -- but they claimed the police were heroes and they stopped the gunman as fast as humanly possible and claimed to follow all established protocol. Lies, lies, damnable lies. Next it came out that they waited over an hour to confront the shooter. So they made up some lame story about an armored door that they were unable to enter because "keys." Now that's been shown to not only be unbelievable but a complete lie. And that not only were the doors to the classroom unlocked but they were incapable of locking from the inside. What a disgrace upon Uvalde PD, their ISD police and the cunty sheriffs departments. They're each packed with liars and cowards. It's a maddening, fucking disgrace they all haven't resigned out of shame let alone been fired and blacklisted. Each member of every one of those departments should have their weapons and ammo confiscated except for a pistol and a single bullet. And then told exactly where to place their loaded pistol on their own chin and which direction to aim. That's the only acceptable way for any of them to use a weapon in the future: a bullet to their own brains. The fact that the state DPS continues to back them and support them tells you everything you need to know about the state of the practice of law enforcement.6 points

Again, thank you all for the postings and damn solid analysis. Here is mine. This war continues for years. Putin thought it would be easy, but remember he is a KGB hack. He hates the west and will never lose that. I don't think the Generals will launch. They know, Putin does not care. Russian army goes into attrition with minor offensives, but it becomes a defensive war. Something they will lose if the US and NATO keep supporting the UAF. I mean 8 HIMARS ain't shit on a front that large, but it can change a battle. So think smart, move your stuff around and bleed the Russians. At the troop level, forget about equipment, what matters is decimating their personnel. Ukraine can do this. We can support. I have been watching some of the videos of their tactical recon groups. These guys have less equipment than an average hunter in texas. Med Kits, night vision. I sent over a few pieces of kit I no longer need. Suggest we all go look at our gear and see what they could use. A backpack, some medical gear, solar chargers so troops can charge their phones and call home. hell just a good note. Fuck the bunker dwarf. I am not dealing with Ukraine's issues, but my friends, we are going to start feeling the pain in other countries. It sucks.6 points
