  12. Update: - This volunteering experience has really been a good one. People are really grateful and the volunteer teams have been about 60-70% locals with the remainder foreigners like me. It is really inspiring to see how the Ukranians are like "Fuck it and fuck you, Putin. We rebuild." Being a little part of that feels really fucking good, given my family history fleeing Ruzzn oppression, my feelings on this war and what i know about it through this thread, and, now, actually meeting the people. - I am so sick of air alerts every night. Can't imagine what it'd be like in the Kharkiv direction for example. Sounds like a tornado siren. Usually they just throw some Shaheds at us, which is no big deal, but a couple nights ago and tonight it was ballistic missiles like Iskander/S300, which can make it through the Patriots. Regardless, those hoes always attack at night which ducks up my sleep schedule because i start work at 8 or 9. Fuck you, Putin. I imagine my 7 and 5 year old living through this and how to explain it to them so the understand the gravity of it and take cover, but it doesn't taint their childhood. - Tinder date was great but was no more than some passionate kissing bc we were in public places all night and she needed to get home before martial law curfew kicked in. My understanding is that Ukrainians are not big on PDA so I'll take a conditional W there. We have plans to meet up again tomorrow night, her kiddo will be with her ex, and we've talked about a sleepover. She was comparable to her pics, too, which is nice. More substantive update to come with observations and whatnot. But fuck Putin and Slava Ukraini!

  20. The film tariff is fascinating. Does it apply to just movies shown in theaters? What about movies made for streaming? If it does, what if Netflix has a one episode series that is 2 hours long? Since intellectual property isn't consumed, does it apply retroactively? The scary part is this: "This is a concerted effort by other Nations, and therefore a national security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda." Let that sink in for a bit. That is not about industry or revenue. It's about controlling what Americans can watch, using "national security" as the justification.

  23. Amazing. Trump is truly an instinctive genius of politics. First, yet again he’s go people talking about something completely idiotic instead of something very important that is impacting them right now. Second and much more consequentially, he is successfully baiting people into suggesting more cost effective prison ideas and thus implicitly supporting the false premise that violent crime is high, which is the central premise of his presidency.

  25. You know, that sounds an awful lot like my ex-wife. She was down to pick up the extra custody days as a favor until Kiev got hit hard on 24 April and then she tried to welch. But, to her credit, she stuck to her word and here I am. Here's a few pics/vids of the demolition/prep work we've done to convert an old hospital into an inpatient mental health center for veterans, under a spoiler alert: Finally, it turns out that the attacks of the night of 3-4 May caused some damage in my neighborhood. I'd like to act like I'm a hoss about it all but, honestly, after the air sirens wake me up, it often takes me a while to get back to sleep. Last night, I finally just moved my mattress to the foyer in my Airbnb, which is the only place I have that follows the "two walls rule" (<--context) and put my earbuds in playing white noise and said "fuck it, I ain't seeking shelter no matter what Putin sends." It worked, and I'm doing it for the remainder of my time here.

Perhaps because the cult supports the misogyny and that part is personal for me, but listening to one of the most materialistic human beings on the planet tell parents to suck it up when we know for many it won't be about dolls or pencils it will be about food and shelter is just gah....I can't.

  37. It's all bullshit. Saying anything without regard for the truth, or the impact uttering the words will have, or even if the thing is possible in this reality. It's the unfiltered mind of a stupid child... not just a stupid child, the stupidest child you've ever met. If nothing happens, it's forgotten and never brought up again. If something good happens, he takes credit (even if there is zero connection). If something bad happens, it's Joe Biden's fault. Good thing the adults are back.

  40. Sounds like the toxicity of the "Made in the USA" brand is spreading from Canada to Europe now, too. Buy American? No Thanks, Europe Says, as Tariff Backlash Grows. A shifting perception of the United States amid President Trump’s trade war is prompting Europeans to pivot decisively away from U.S. goods and services. For motorcycle lovers in Sweden, Harley-Davidson is the hottest brand on the road. Jack Daniel’s whiskey beckons from the bar at British pubs. In France, Levi’s jeans are all about chic. But in the tumult of President Trump’s trade war with Europe, many European consumers are starting to avoid U.S. products and services in what appears to be a decisive and potentially long-term shift away from buying American, according to a new assessment by the European Central Bank. In April, Mr. Trump imposed a 10 percent blanket tariff on America’s trading partners, and threatened “reciprocal tariffs” on many of those, including the European Union. Companies like Tesla and McDonald’s are seeing customers in Europe put off by “Made in America.” “The newly imposed U.S. trade tariffs on European products are causing European consumers to think twice about what’s in their shopping cart,” the European Central Bank wrote in a blog post about its research on consumer behavior. “Consumers are very willing to actively move away from U.S. products and services.” Europeans had already begun testing grass-roots boycotts on American products, including Heinz ketchup and Lay’s potato chips, shortly after Mr. Trump took office. His threats to take over Greenland, part of Denmark, energized Danes to organize no-buy campaigns on Facebook. Tesla owners in Sweden slapped “shame” bumper stickers on their cars to distance themselves from Elon Musk, the Tesla chief executive, who is one of Mr. Trump’s top advisers. But Europeans’ anguish over Mr. Trump’s treatment of America’s longtime allies has hardened as he has moved to rewire world trade with steep global tariffs, the central bank found. Mr. Trump took particular aim at the European Union, which he called “very, very bad to us” for not buying more from the United States, and threatened the bloc with a 20 percent “reciprocal” tariff last month. Such talk bewildered many Europeans and rattled E.U. leaders, who retaliated with a 25 percent duty on many U.S. goods. Both sides called a temporary truce after Mr. Trump abruptly reversed course and delayed tariffs until the summer. But the 10 percent base-line tariff is still in place, and a trans-Atlantic trade war could easily flare again. And even if a trade deal is reached, Europe’s newfound wariness of its longtime ally will not easily be unwound. The European Central Bank’s study found that even if a mere 5 percent tax was placed on American products sold in Europe, Europeans would be inclined to shun them. What is new, the central bank said, is a “preference” among European consumers “to move away from U.S. products and brands altogether,” no matter what the cost. That was the case even for households that could bear the brunt of higher prices. “Even though they could afford more expensive U.S. products and services, they consciously choose alternatives,” the bank said. “This suggests that consumers’ reactions may not just be a temporary response to tariff increases, but instead signal a possible long-term structural shift in consumer preferences away from U.S. products and brands.” In Germany and Italy, developers have created apps that scan grocery and clothing items for people who want to make sure they are not buying American. The top app, BrandSnap, even suggests European alternatives. On a French-run “Boycott USA!” Facebook channel with 31,000 members, people boast about buying Adidas, a German brand, over Nike and New Balance, and post stories about avoiding travel to the United States. In a Danish Facebook group with 95,000 members, people try to help one another figure out if products like Gillette Mach 3 razor blades or Schweppes soda are from the United States. One run from Sweden promotes alternatives to Airbnb and is calling for a European boycott on Meta platforms for a week in May. Europeans have also posted online to say they have begun canceling subscriptions to U.S. streaming giants, including Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video. Some consumers who have boycotted Amazon have gone online to lament that delivery from alternate e-commerce platforms in their countries is slower or less reliable, but say they are staying the course. Millions of people still buy American goods and services worldwide, but U.S. companies and investors are keeping a close eye on international markets for signs of anti-American sentiment related to Mr. Trump’s policies. In Europe, Tesla sales continued a sharp decline in April, data showed, including an 81 percent plunge in Sweden from a year earlier, as protests against Mr. Musk’s political views held steady. And McDonald’s said it was observing growing negative attitudes abroad toward U.S. brands, especially in Northern Europe and Canada. International consumers are “going to be cutting back their purchase of American brands, and we’ve seen an uptick in anti-American sentiment,” the burger chain’s chief executive, Chris Kempczinski, said in a call with analysts last week. The McDonald’s brand does not seem to have been damaged yet — same-store sales in Canada and Europe were down only 1 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier. But there is an “eight- to a 10-point increase in anti-American sentiment,” he said.

  41. Finally found a photo of Jeep, the only cat we have ever had - “inherited” him from our son who had given him to his future wife. She couldn’t keep him and returned him to our son who was living in an apartment with 3 of his college buddies. Naturally, Jeep wound up with us when son & girlfriend married in 1991. I had never been a cat person, but of course Jeep, a Maine Coon breed, “adopted” me as his best friend and crawled all over me at odd hours of the day & night. He lived to age 17, almost 15 of those years with us. He was the biggest cat I ever saw - “only” 18 lbs, but could easily stand on his hind legs and reach up to grab something off the dining table if we weren’t watching. Jeep was a good cat, and I miss him.
