I just got mugged at the chevron getting gas before rental drop in beautiful Oakland. I had looked around and there was nobody suspicious and after I got the pump in my hand, a black sedan pulled up and two guys jumped out and ran at me…Teenagers with hoods and masks. We were so tight between the gas pump in the car that they really couldn’t use their advantage in numbers, one kid grabbed my left arm and was trying to take my watch off while the second kid was trying to grab m. The one kid kept struggling to figure out how to take off my watch for like 15 seconds while I kept trying to pull away an FU them. About that time I realized I had the gas nozzle in my right hand and pumped gas on the nearest one’s head, screaming, “ I’ve got a lighter... I want us to die!!” The car next to me had started honking his horn, and so both of them ran off and jumped in the black car which took off like an Indy car and almost got in a wreck. It turns out the second one had gotten my watch off my wrist before he ran. The whole thing could not have lasted more than 20 to 30 seconds. so that was different. But I kept my phone and credit cards and ID to get on the plane so all is good and I’m drinking a glass of wine at the airport. My $50 watch looked like an Omega - so they only focused on it and not my wallet. Feel free to share your I got mugged story.31 points

Some of y'all get so worked up about the dumbest shit. The kid threw a Texas hat on the ground. He didn't fuck your wife. Let it go.25 points

I know it’s annoying. I know that message I posted is the same thing, over and over. Yet….its also true. Shit, the metaphor works well in this thread. Sorry not sorry I keep shouting about the wall of water headed our way. Maybe if we’d fucking do something about it, and not double down on our current path, I wouldn’t have to say anything else. But it genuinely pisses me off when everyone tries to sell the “this is Texas, we love and help each other!” lie when those same people celebrate tossing a huge percentage of this state’s population, the people who build your homes, prepare your food, to the ground in cuffs, shove them in camps, all that shit. I’d love it if we meant what we said and practiced what we preached. And I’m sorry if it upsets you to be reminded that we don’t. But I’ll never be silent in the face of this shit. It would be evil for me to do so. Care for every human in this state as much as you care for each of those little girls, that’s all I ask. Yet, it’s clearly too much to ask.24 points

Eh, we all have our weird shit. For example, my wife at her first Surly tailgate: Wife: "Do you know these people?" Me: "Sort of. Not really." Wife: "What's your connection?" Me: "The internet."20 points

Chloe Childress was a beloved camp counselor at Mystic and a beautiful person with a promising future. Chloe was co-president of the Honor Council, a varsity cross-country runner, and the founder of a service club dedicated to helping senior citizens. She was supposed to attend University of Texas at Austin this fall. This beautiful soul lost her life in the flood.20 points

I’m still in the process of processing. Took this afternoon off from the news and social media. Grew up going to Hunt. First to pick up my sister from Mystic (and I still hate James Avery as a result) then going to Stewart, then my nieces at Mystic and nephew at La Junta. My dad lives in Kerrville (it got interesting, but he is ok). Sister and nieces grew up and worked at Mystic. Know the Eastlands. Know the Ragsdales. Know some of the families. Have friends that are in Hunt and flooded but are ok. As they have said “everything you loved is gone or destroyed.” So happy that the posters here, like Homesick (who I know) and Blackcat (who I don’t - maybe) are ok and with their families. I know what these camps stand for and hope they all continue. I don’t like letting tragedies win. Tale care everyone and hug those you care about.17 points

Trae Tha Truth (for those who don’t know he’s a famous rapper from Houston) is as real as they come. every disaster that takes place in Texas, he and his people are there with boots on the ground, doing anything they can to not only raise money and awareness, but to actually volunteer their time and energy to do anything they can to help. a true humanitarian. can’t say enough about this man. a lot of celebrities shill for money for their favorite causes, but nobody actually gets down to ground zero and volunteers like Trae and his people. rally thankful for him and all that he does.15 points

But politicizing this is bad in the eyes of our overlords, while this was directly caused by county leadership politicizing a fucking disaster warning system TWICE15 points

If I am a parent who lost a child and I am greeted by the camp representatives with a verbal onslaught of "God's Will" and, "calling his angels to him" there would be bloodshed. Thinking back to all the camps my daughters attended, I didn't really check any of them for safety precautions. I just assumed they were safe, cause all our friends had been having their kids attend them for years.14 points

There's nothing irrational about hating either one of these motherfuckers, and not just for their player antics. Rogers is an anti-vax conspiracy theory spouting nutjob who talks about chemtrails, and fucking Bosworth has made a career out of shitting on Texas while living his retirement in fucking Austin. They can both get all the way fucked.14 points

They very literally turned down getting a flood alert system in place in 2015 because the funds would have come from the Obama administration. City of Kerrville leadership CHOSE to not have alert system. Below is the transcript from that meeting: Mr. Hewitt: Sirens did not seem to get very much support. The thought was that sirens are better for tourists than local residents. The sirens would only be beneficial for someone that's not familiar with the area, and wouldn't know what to do. .... COMMISSIONER MOSER: The cost of that whole thing is going to be like 976 thousand dollars. That's a lot of money. All of it, and the reason we're here today and moving so quickly is that there is a FEMA grant that's available until as long as we apply by January the 20th. JUDGE POLLARD: Which is when President Obama goes out of office. (Laughter.) JUDGE POLLARD: Well, the reason I mention that is because he authorized this particular thing, and it's going to -- MS. KIRBY: It's a coincidence. COMMISSIONER MOSER: Going on the record with that it's a coincidence. And so there has to be a presidential declaration of disaster to be able to have these kinds of funds available. So it goes away just so happens to be when he leaves office. ... COMMISSIONER REEVES: And I will say and, Sheriff, you can correct me if I'm off base on this, the camps have had a very good system of letting down river if there's a rise, they're phoning their competitors or colleagues down river and letting them know what happened. It's informal as you said, but it's been a very good system to let them know over time. more good links to the meeting minutes in the link below in the spoiler. They also turned down an ARPA grant in 2021 because it came from the wrong color president and they were being crazy about COVID. We're all getting the Texas that we voted for. And it is a Texas that doesn't give a shit about dead children.14 points

I can't speak for anyone else here, but the locals hosting visitors (owners of the camps, the RV park owners, the city, and the county) are primarily to blame. They live there. They know the history of flooding. They chose not to have a flood monitoring system. They chose not to have a warning system. They chose not to have adequate evacuation plans. On top of that, I blame the state for not adequately funding a regional system, as well as this regime for stripping resources from the NWS. The degree to which any of the campers themselves are to blame is nada. The degree to which any of the RVers are to blame would lie in their potential choices at the ballot box that foster negligence among all layers of government.14 points

I keep catching blurbs like this that indicate there was knowledge before hand of an impending catastrophic event. If the concern was great enough to stage swift water rescue teams in the hill country two days before the actual floods, what the fuck were campers doing near the water. In the shitshow press conference with Noem a couple of days ago when they were all congratulating each other on how awesome their efforts were, they also mentioned assets staged in the area prior to the actual floods in anticipation of something happening. I get the feeling the post mortem will be ugly in that regard.14 points

I think a little better description of it is that it's swimming, and sailing, and fishing, and horseback riding, and all sorts of other fun things for kids to do. So a lot of the kids go back for years until they are in high school, at which point, some transition to being counselors at the camp. But these camps are very expensive. So, as @C-Man mentioned, later, when some of these kids end up at large Texas universities like UT, some of them know each other and end up in fraternities or sororities together or get recommended for bids to these organizations because they knew each other from years of going to summer camp together. I wouldn't call it weird for what it is at its base. It's just fun shit for kids to do during the summer. But because it's expensive and there are limited spots available (and because people have been attending for generations, it is exclusive and because of that, it feeds into the exclusivity of fraternities and sororities later.14 points

Josh Weathers, one of our Church's song leaders and a rising Red Dirt Country star is doing a FaceBook concert, and has raised $206k in less than 2.5 hours. I bid $7500 for a "house" concert, it went for $36k, I thought I was overbidding. Someone has another big heart, and a bigger checkbook. Just wonderful to hear. CHIEF13 points

the accusation isn't really about the AFD, it's about the State's knowledge of the potential for a disaster. The State knew the situation was serious, had started mobilizing (including the admin aspects of that) on July 2nd and it remains to be seen but it does not appear that the State and local counties and municipalities were talking to each other as they should have been. Cuts against the notion that this was unforeseen and nothing else could have been done. Everyone was caught flat footed for reasons. negligence, gross negligence, all the while they lie about the causes of the EXCESS loss of life. and again, nothing will come of it. The thing is, this is EXACTLY what government is supposed to be here for, but no, we have to legislate against the boogeyman and do performative bullshit instead.13 points

I remember when I was a kid, I was getting out of the theater with my parents when a mugger came up and tried to steal my mom's pearls. My dad tried to fight him but they both ended up getting shot and dying. Since then I have sworn an oath to pursue justice against all evildoers. I will add this lighter and gas pump technique to my repertoire.13 points

I hope these fucks are haunted by these dead girls for the rest of their lives (hopefully short). I don’t have kids. I’ve only been to Kerr county a handful of times, but I sure wouldn’t have minded my tax dollars going to prevent a tragedy like this. I guess that’s the difference between being a stupid Libtard and a maga shithead.13 points

I mean....maybe. Sometimes, some humans do some decent shit. But most of the time, the majority of us dedicate all of our efforts and collective social policy to hurting others. Free tamales are great. But they don't make up for the fact that - as just one example - if they were being served by undocumented people, most every person in the area doing volunteer work would stop to cheer on ICE as the grabbed them and tossed them in a van. It doesn't make up for the fact that most of those people will continue to do all they can to insure that our government entities are further defunded and attacked so they become even less able to try to prevent future disasters. Free food is window dressing. It doesn't conceal the rot behind those windows. We need to be the kind of society that actually works to make sure that tragedies like this don't happen anymore, or at least don't happen to this degree. And that is the one thing that we can all rest assured will NOT happen in this case. Or any other. We'll stick with the victory of our new state motto, "It Could Have Been Worse." The CG crews working during Katrina were fucking real-deal heroes. They worked past their allowed time. They were exhausted. Some crews were told to stand down. They refused, and kept on rescuing people. The CG is some of the best of what we've got. I'm glad we have them.13 points

One thing I meant to mention was the amount of support I observed driving my trailer from Comfort to Ingram. You cannot go a quarter mile without a smoker billowing, Webbers, pop tents, coolers full of tamales, etc. All just good people, strangers and residents alike, just trying to help. Each and everyone one of these places had someone waving a sign that said, “FREE FOOD AND WATER”. No questions, no nothing. Just please allow us to help in our own way. I almost had to pull over. It’s fucking dusty right now just typing this out.13 points
