Two thoughts. One, I think the show runners were fucking with us with the acoustic guitar. Like, let’s make a crazy set that would not have survived and start an even more over-the-top musical number…and then just kidding. Two, flat, potato face with dead eyes works well at the end.

The guitar aspect makes more sense in the game as it was a big bond between Ellie and Joel, so by extension expanding it to her new relationship is logical, from a purely plot/character/relationship growth aspect.

But even in the game I was... this doesn't seem like a great time or place for this.. but..

I took it as she let a bit of the great memories back in that she had with Joel and learning to play but then remember his murder is why she's there so all that good stuff needs to get pushed back down. Next week appears to have flashbacks. I was wondering if we were going to get those every time she killed a member of Abby's team based on seeing one after she pipes the bald chick.

Do we know definitely if this season will wrap up the 2nd game or if that's pushed to season 3? If it's the former, maybe that's not a bad thing given how Game of Thrones went after the book material ran out. I'm not sure where we are in the 2nd game and how much is left having not been a game fheg.

One gripe that I had with the episode was the scout team to the hospital basement realizing they're fucked, having the wherewithal to order that they be sealed in, but not painting the walls with each other's brain stems, thus dooming themselves to a horrible existence. I understand breaking some in show rules in order to create a visually cool or disturbing scene, but offing yourself and/or others when you realize that you're infected is THE rule of zombie movies/shows/games.

This season is only the first half of the second game. It will not "wrap up" this season.

Well the bald chick became incapacitated fairly quickly, so maybe the scout team started to transform before they understood what was happening and had any ability to kill themselves.

My only gripe is the scenes when Ellie and Dina are walking down the middle of the street in broad daylight having a conversation at normal volume. At least stick to the sides of the buildings and speak a little more quietly. In fairness though, this happened a little bit with Joel in season one as well.

If you were hoping we were going to start moving past lengthy gaps between seasons of high profile shows, think again.

Why would people think or hope this? Especially for a show like this?

There was a 28 month gap from S1 to S2 and it looks like it'll be the same for S3. Entirely expected.

In the post-episode discussion with the filmmakers, one mentioned that those people spore factories had been stuck down there in limbo for several years, which was surprising because, like you, I had initially assumed they were the team that had been mentioned earlier.

I very much agree with your second point. When Ellie and Dina were shown wandering around the city yammering out loud, I wanted to tell them to STFU already. They clearly understand the need for relative quiet because of their reaction to the clanging tank hatch. With them not using their inside voices in a potentially hostile place, I got fairly annoyed by the casual disregard of stealth.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your misunderstanding, and there might be multiple spore factories with some being much older than others, but the Korean guy/factory had "L. PARK" on his jacket, and his mother (also last name Park) talked about him dying down there as part of the scout team.

I guess it's possible the prologue scene was years earlier..... It isn't connected to the rest of the episode, and it seemed Nora knew it was in the air.  The pre-credits scene specifically talked about keeping it quiet.

Prepuce pointed out correctly that def was the prologue scene woman's son.

I think the scout team was from years ago, and the interrogation with Park's mother was a flashback. They mention that Isaac is out investigating a potential breech of the cease fire between WLF and the Scars during the interrogation. There sure as shit ain't no cease fire in place when Ellie comes to town.

A little clunky and needlessly confusing.

I think you're understanding me correctly. It was certainly a surprise to me when I was watching the post-episode stuff, and one of the showrunners (no real clue or memory of who was talking) said they'd been down there for a "years." @A-Tex Devil and @aggie08 provide better explanations/context, I think.

But, yeah, it was a bit confusing when I heard that. I wasn't fully engaged, though, as I was sleepy, getting ready for bed, and still nursing a hangover from Saturday night.

Huh.

I'm now confused. How were we supposed to understand that was a flashback?

And wasn't there another scene later in the episode when the Wolves were all standing around and admiring the barrier they had welded into place to keep the one access point stairwell closed off?

I don't understand how that would even matter if it was a flashback, but maybe that will become clearer later.

Not interested in having anyone spoil anything by confirming or denying, but when Nora was given her little defiant pre-bludgeoning speech, she said something that caught my attention - "she does exist" or similar. Made me wonder if somehow Ellie is the mythical female that all the Scarfaced Amish are worshipping, and if so, perhaps they provide the deus ex machina that allows Ellie to overthrow the Wolves and all their seemingly superior logistical and firepower advantages.

That was my thinking.

I know this is way out of left field, but I don't understand the security situation.  WLF has armored vehicles, automatic weapons, fancy patrols but --- there's a park full of Scars, as well as  several buildings they just kind of walk around knowing that there are Clickers inside?
