Joe Biden Veepstakes 2020

Wonder if Beto is angling for one of these cabinet posts? He's been putting in serious work on Biden's behalf here in Texas.

I still think it's a crazy idea though. What's the upside? Anyone that pays attention and cares is already aware that Biden's admin will be made up of adults in contrast to what we have now.

What a stupid fucking premise to begin with no wonder OAN folks lapped it up. Because it's so realistic as a fundamental aspect of human nature that Biden phones of Harris, gives her the bad news, and she immediately calls everyone in her campaign and demands they unfollow all of Biden's shit on their various social media accounts. That totally seems realistic.

Well, it plays with them because that is how their immature brains would react to a supposed slight.  "UNFOLLOWED!  Ha, I showed him!"

The Dem convention lineup came out. There is a slot for VP and there is a slot for Harris, so people think it’s not Harris. But I’m not sure it means anything, lineups can change.

Biden campaign announces some VP staff ahead of the VP.  Karine Jean-Pierre will be the chief of staff for Biden's running mate.  I’m guessing the VP has known for long enough to get some things rolling.

I'd heard that name before but couldn't place her. Checked her wiki bio and she definitely leans toward the more progressive wing of the party, having worked with MoveOn.org. Out of curiosity, do any of the major VP contenders have ties to them?

Edit: Just answered my own question -- MoveOn were vocal supporters of trying to recruit Warren to run in 2016. Possibly a red herring, but I think we're all eager to know who Biden is going to pick.

yesterday was a crazy roller coaster.  @Hank Kingsley and i were texting about it.  kamala was up 46-40, then it was tied, then it went all the way to 70 (rice) to 26 (kamala), before settling back in around even at ~$0.45.

kamala was back in front late last night.  after i was certain someone leaked it was rice yesterday, now i think it's just people manipulating these sites to make a couple bucks.

They wouldn't be able to resist the Benghazi trap.  No one gives a shit about it but they'd be obsessed with it for months.

Pay no attention to these 200,000 covid deaths. No big deal, and we're doing great! However, I would like to talk to you about four deaths in Bengazi nine years ago...

Well Rice is getting killed on social media today.  It’s noticeably the radical right wing folks who are doing it, but it’s gained such traction in the last hour or so.

So it’s either definitely Rice or this is being well-played at it’s Harris.

I’ve been wrong before, but I don’t see any upside to Susan Rice.

There are only a few options that have any strategic upside. The media coverage of the VP selection process has been awful.  It’s been more about pundits trying to guess who it will be instead of talking about who it should be and fleshing out the strengths and weaknesses of the potential picks.  The demands that Biden pick a Black woman aren’t helpful either b/c it tokenizes the selection and minimizes the accomplishments of the candidates. As if any Black woman will do.  If Biden doesn’t pick a Black woman, there might be some backlash.  If he does pick a Black woman, it will diminish credibility of the pick. It’s been a shit show all around and I just want it to be over.

There is absolutely none in terms of winning the election. Biden just trusts Rice immensely given their time together in Obama's administration. The VP is basically the chief advisor to the President and Rice is loved and trusted by Biden. That said, Harris is the best pick if you want to win.

I get Harris checks a lot of boxes but I have a hard time coming up with how she’s going to expand the coalition to help Biden to victory.  I was big on Harris early to win the nomination, mainly because she checked the boxes, and I still like her, but as Biden’s VP pick, the only advantage I see is one of optics and maybe that’s enough in our superficial world of sound bytes.  Her record of inconsistencies is her weakness but when you’re running against Trump, who gives a shit about record. I suppose the rationale for Harris is she does the least harm and she has an established acceptable “brand” among the media types.

Rice just seems like a shitty pick.

i could be wrong, but she’s never run for office, probably never debated, and republicans would bring up all that Benghazi shit again. Nobody cares about Benghazi, but it’s still freaking annoying to hear about it. Remember when Fox News cut away from hurricane sandy coverage to talk about Benghazi?  I could imagine Murdoch calling in to the tv guys controlling the channel and saying “who gives a shit about liberals drowning? Lets keep up this witch hunt so that we can continue to try and get Obama impeached!”

It's possible Whitmer could have helped Michigan but polls have showed it hardly matters who is picked. As long as it's not a disaster pick like Klobuchar which we have avoided.

On the negative side, she's a sitting senator in a coastal, liberal state. She changed her position seemingly weekly in the primaries based on whichever way the prevailing polling winds were blowing. She has a questionable corporatist/authoritarian background. She's basically Elizabeth Warren if Warren were Black instead of Native American.

No one is saying or inferring this bullshit except for Warrenistas creating a false talking point.. There are qualified black women candidates, and that's why there are people who support choosing one. If there was literally no qualified candidate in D.C. and people started floating Oprah or something, you'd have a point. But you don't.

This is incredible.

The only people that would think this way are Twitter Warren idolizers. And Trumpkins.

Everyone else will act like normal human beings and accept whoever Joe nominates instead of Monday morning race baiting.

Hank, I can have an opinion. If you don’t think race is going to be weaponized in this election, I don’t know what to tell you. Biden’s VP pick is going to face the most inflammatory and despicable attacks.  It’s important everyone understands that and is prepared to defend her from those, regardless of the pick.

Yeah, but those attacks don't have to come from you.

What attack did I make?  My criticism was on the media’s coverage/framing of the pick around race. They made that one issue the most important above all other criteria. It’s unfair to candidates to do that and IMO insulting to the electorate.

You've somehow convinced yourself that Biden picking a black woman would be a mistake. Not a particular candidate. Any black woman. It's fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, the media sucks. They sucked during the actual primary, and they suck now during Veepstakes. Every candidate was treated unfairly in some way. But the tribalism has gone too far on Twitter. That goes for Bernie people, Warren people, Buttigieg people, Kamala people, Beto people, Yang people, etc.

I understand how easily a person can get trapped into a Twitter echo chamber. You've fallen face first into the Warren bubble. I like you and think you're a smart guy. I hope once the VP is picked (assuming it's not Warren) that you take a break from the Liz train and settle back in to reality. :)

My guess is that he's going to announce thursday, and I think there's a fair chance he's going to announce a slate of major cabinet nominees along with it - VP, State, AG, Defense, treasury, plus education and labor.

Nooooooo--why would you give Trump/Fox/OANN a whole list of targets to attack?

For fuck sake, we all know Susan Rice is going to be SecState.  By why give FoxNews that bit to fill eleventy billion segments of Benghazi bullshit?

Rick Wilson may have given us this porn version of Palin, but Steve Schmidt gave us the actual Sarah Palin. Game Change is an interesting watch, Julianne Moore killed it as Palin. Woody Harrelson portrayed Schmidt.

The Pod Save America episode on choosing a VP was fascinating.  They really delved into the break down that caused the Palin pick.

Beto is going to be the head of ICE.  It is known.

Just looked at the lineup. Looks like everyone but Rice has a speaking slot, not that there would necessarily be one for Rice even if she wasn't in contention.

Look at who else is in the line-up--every major contender for the nomination.

That doesn't mean anything.
